With a strong grasp of technique and style, I have developed a language in stone that communicates subtle grace. Art is at the core of my inspiration. Participating with creativity has brought a light into my life that facilitates my significant contribution. I believe art has the capacity to show us the paths to higher ways of existence. It is the involvement in the process of making art that I believe will cultivate appreciation. This is the light that has guided me through all my artistic endeavors. The Marble Institute of Colorado Marble, Colorado The Marble Institute of Colorado is an international stone sculpting symposium that has been functioning for the last fourteen years. This annual event was the springboard to my sculpting career. After two years as an apprentice at Marble/marble, I was brought on as a full time staff member. There, I was able to learn a wide range of techniques and technical necessities to function as a professional public artist. While assisting others, I rely on the skills I have acquired through my introduction to the world of sculpting. Each year, I work to help over 150 artists achieve their dreams of sculpting: stone. Studio Forma Boulder, Colorado Studio Forma is an artistic cooperative with its primary discipliner in landscape architecture. Being involved in creating landscapes has versed me in creating sacred spaces. These works of art call for my expertise in sculpting stone additions to accentuate the cumulative creativity of the- the landscape architect, and myself. As an artist, I enjoy creating in a wide variety of scales and mediums. Marna & Associates Boulder, Colorado Marpa is a landscaping company that has a reputation for creating botanical garden caliber spaces for private residences. I have been contracted by Marpa to help create gardens with water -features. My expertise in stone has been utilized in creating some of the finest water -features in Colorado. I was brought in for my creative insight, attention to detail, and my understanding of stone. Artscapes Denver, Colorado Defined as an artistic landscaping company, Artscapes is one of the leading companies producing public art. I have been brought in for my experience and knowledge in stone. Every opportunity to share in the creation of space broadens my capacity to create for a purpose that satisfies multiple interests. I am always eager to collaborate. -Jo64lua WILNE Z *International Experience Through The Marble Institute of Colorado, I have been exposed to the international art community including the master sculptor, Kazutaka Uchida. Since our meeting, Uchida has hired me twice to work along side him in Japan. I have worked with Uchida on monumental pieces for museums, and also public and private collections. Studying with Uchida has exposed me to the techniques of professional networking, from museum curators to presidents of universities. I have worked with Uchida on two different twenty -piece stone exhibitions in Japan. He has also hired me to assiston a sculpture exhibited at the Toyota Municipal Museum in Japan next to Henry Moore's bronze sculpture. *Other fxperience I am compelled to continue my study of public spaces with some of the most respected artists. I have been hired by many professional sculptors for my skills in sculpting, installation, and creativity. These professional sculptors have relied on my assistance to meet many deadlines including commissions for universities, museums, and public and private collections. Last year, I was hired to work on two stone sculptures that were installed on the Lamont School of Music on Denver University's campus; those sculptures being the two largest reliefs in Colorado. I have also assisted with. a commission for Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California. I have been hired to work on numerous public and private commissions in New York, Colorado, California, and Japan. My interest in creating this program was to facilitate community art by providing free opportunities for the general public to paint, draw, sculpt, and make music. Art In Your Park has been functioning successfully for four years. Working with Art In Your Park, I can appreciate what art does for the community. I have found through my experiences with people that when they can interact with a work of art, it sparks their interest in participation. I believe that everything about art cultivates appreciation. "Fires dance the shadows" 2002 Colorado Yule Marble 54" x 68" x 36" Purple Door Studio in Denver, CO -This sculpture is based on my appreciation for the culinary arts. I love to cook so I created this piece from my personal feeling of connection with the process. I feel there is a mystical intuition that takes place as we are involved in the artistic process. The chef is whipping up something spicy! 2. "AII that music waiting inside" 2003 Indiana Limestone 44" x 50" x 12" Purple Door Studio in Denver, CO -I usually develop my form for an interpretational experience, but this piece necessitated a more representational approach. This is a tribute to what is shared between parent and child or teacher and student. Sharing space in this fashion displays how interconnected their growth is. The mother is on a child's chair to show how she is growing, while the child is looking up to symbolize how she is striving to learn. I kept the piece playful in form to give light to the process of education. The sculpture focuses more on the form of the two so that the attention is placed on the two spending time together, time that can be talking, laughing or just playing. 3. "The Creative Eye" 1996 Andesite, Basalt, Granite 14" x 18" x T' Private. Collection in Tokyo, Japan -1 did this piece while I was in Japan with themaster sculptor Kazutaka Uchida. We talked at -length about the erfect circle. I did this piece to show simple perfection. It represents the creative force that streams through everything through all time. I chose the form of the eye to be .the vehicle for thisconcept for its wide expanse of vision. Having the two sided eye shows the transcendence of creativity. 4. "Get down and mess around" 2002 Indiana Limestone 12" x 16" x 22" Private Collection in Aurora, CO -This pianist was the second sculpture in my musical series. It contains the rhythmic force of months of incubation. The sculpture is at the foundation of creating music. Where my violinist is feeling the music and playing with the band, this musician is getting the band started. All the lines are taking off. 5. "Inspiration... moves me brightly" 2001 Indiana Limestone 19" x 12" x 9" Purple Door Studio in Denver, CO -Being my greatest musical challenge, the violinist had to be my first musician. This is a reflection of my inspiration to learn how to play the violin. This was based on my influence of the impressionist era of painting. I want the viewer to creatively participate in the artwork. A whirl wind billows through resonate stings; a glistening melody is pulled to a T. 6. `In Heaven the band plays.. our favorite song" 2002 Colorado Yule Marble 22" x 17" x 8" Purple Door Studio in Denver, CO -This piece is blowing clouds of sound in waves of cumulous rhythm. A flautist seems to be a. mystical musician. I interpret this instrument as a free flowing dance, transcending the sound to a point where the music mixes with the musician. I create the bodies of my artists to represent their stability. Having lines in the bodies of my musician shows how the musician is a conduit for the sound. To play music one must be totally grounded, so I rarely give them feet because they are the foundation. No Text CARICOFsculpture 3162 Buckboard Drive Evergreen, CO 80439 303-674-3203 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing in regard to Joshua Wiener, a young artist whom I have had the pleasure of working with on numerous occasions. As a professional artist, I occasionally have the need to hire assistants, and in Joshua's case I have made a good choice. I work on a very tight schedule, but sometimes I find I am running out of time, so in order to complete a project, I must hire someone who knows stone. I've been able to just give Joshua direction, and he has taken it from there, to completion. He has the ability to work the stone with a grace and seemingly effortless manner, to the point that I haven't had to "go back" over what he has done. I have utter confidence in his skill and his "eye". Joshua and I work on staff at The Marble Institute of Colorado, held annually in Marble, CO. This six -week program is very intense and the staff is sometimes called on to do unusual tasks, and Joshua is always -ready -to pitch in. Because of his experience in Japan (he apprenticed with Kazutaka Uchida, re -known Japanese sculptor), he has skill that he shares with other sculptors during workshops. His tool knowledge and skill are important to this program called MARBLE/marble Symposium. I share studio space with Joshua, so I have been privileged to watch him grow as an artist and stone carver. He has developed a style of his own, influenced by the many sculptors who surround him, but never duplicated. He has created works that include his passion for music, so movement and rhythm are critical to this body of work. He has grown up around stone carvers, so he was offered subliminal "lessons" all his life, but it wasn't until about 8 years ago that he decided to seriously try his hand at it, and once he did, he was hooked. He is now a passionate stone carver, and I am always amazed and delighted by his newest works. S '1 Kathleen Caricof MARBLE/marble symposium A Program of The Marble Institute of Colorado October 22, 2002 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing in behalf of Joshua Wiener. As a professional sculptor and the Director of The Marble Institute of Colorado, I have had experiences with Joshua that qualifies this letter of recommendation. I have been carving stone since 1971, creating many private and public commissions. For the past several years I have hired Joshua to assist me in different aspects of creating these large sculptures. Several years ago while Joshua was working on a sculpture at MARBLE/marble Symposium, our guest artist, Kazutaka Uchida of Japan, noticed Joshua's technique and manner and invited him to be his apprentice in his studio in Toyota City, Japan. Joshua studied Japanese before joining Uchida, and he worked there for almost 2 months. He not only assisted Uchida, but he was able to create his own small granite and basalt sculptures. He returned 2 years later, as invited assistant to Uchida, whereby he helped finish and install a large sculpture that is in a sculpture garden. This sculpture is seen sited next to a Henry Moore bronze sculpture. During this time I have had the confidence to hire Joshua to help me in various stages of creating some of my work as well as being on my staff at MARBLE/marble. During the summer/autumn of 2000, Joshua headed the team that helped me create a monumental marble sculpture that is sited in front of Scripps Memorial Hospital in LaJolla, CA. In several instances I was able to leave him for a couple of days at a time, and the goals I set for completion were met. He has a good sense of how long it will take to accomplish each step in creating a finished sculpture. Josh works daily at the Purple Door Studio in Denver, a studio that has 9 professional sculptors. He has created a body of work that shows his skill and strong style. He is not afraid of any challenge and completes each piece he starts. He has been selling his work and finds time to work as my assistant as well. Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522 Please consider this as my preliminary proposal for the LINCOLN CENTER ENTRYWAY PROJECT. My proposal consists of two concrete areas, located adjacent to the walkways, with seating areas integrated into each area. The concrete would have a design on the surface. Sculptural elements would be located in three or four locations adjacent to these areas. Parts of the existing walkways leading to the areas would be painted to relate to the design in the concrete in the new areas. All the areas adjacent to the sculpture and seating areas would be landscaped with plants, stones, and gravel to create an overall environment. It would be an environment which would invite poeple to either enter the Lincoln Center or sit within and contemplate and enjoy the environment around them. I was director and a member of a team, selected by the Iowa Arts Council, to work with the people of the city to design a town square for Lamoni, IA. I have also collaborated with other artists on public art projects in both Iowa and Minnesota. I feel well qualified and find your project exciting. I would look forward to being a member of the Lincoln Center Entryway Project Team. A resume, slides, slide identification sheet, and list of references are enclosed. Troy provided (5) fish sculptures for the new public pool at the Lakewood Link Recreation Center (1295 South Reed Street). His artistic style, and use of brilliant colors added to the overall aesthetic theme of the pool. The pool contained a Pirate Ship Water Feature, and a water slide with a dragon theme. The pool is designed for small children, and the children are enthralled with the Troy's sculptures. We hung four of the sculptures by cables -over the pool, and the filth sculpture we mounted at child height on the pool deck. Many kids visit and touch this particular "fish" before jumping into the pool. Troy provided his sculptures ahead of schedule, and coordinated his work with the General Contractor. Troy was also able to coordinate his work with the special conditions of the pool environment. Due to the corrosive conditions of the pool atmosphere, Troy and the Contractor hot -dip galvanized the sculptures to prevent corrosion. Then, Troy applied his coatings and colors. In over a year, there has been no evidence of corrosion to his sculptures.This is a testament to the quality of his product. Troy coordinated his initial contract with our purchasing department, partnered with the contractor in regards to galvanizing and placement of the sculptures, completed his work ahead of schedule, and produced a quality product. We are especially pleased with his contribution to the artistic expression of our new pool. It was a pleasure working with Troy, and I recommend his art and services to anyone. The bench is sandstone and has a peaceable kingdom motif blasted into the back. 1999- Trinidad Community College Alamosa, CO 2000 Colorado Percent for the Arts project. This project consists of three steel, pyramidal mountain forms 15-1/2, 14-1/2 and 13 feet tail with three figures arranged in front of them. The sides of the mountain are broken up into areas representing geological stratification and cut-out steel reliefs are overlaid in some of the areas. The mountain forms are painted in browns, blues, rusts and whites. The figures are painted a pale blue and also have overlays on them. There is a steel waterfall coming off the largest mountain and the concrete pad has wave patterns drawn in it to represent the aquifer under the San Luis Valley, the source of life. 1999 R&L Corporation, builders of medical centers. Lincoln Center Entryway Project The Lincoln Center Support League seeks to commission an artist, to work with the Lincoln Center Entryway Project:team, to create artwork for the exterior area of the main entrance at Magnolia and Meldrurn Streets. Art elements could include the walkways, exterior of the building, seating, lighting, a sculpture, or could be multiple works. PROJECT As a collaborative member of the team, the artist will develop ideas for a theme, materials for the artwork, and how. it could be integrated into the site. Upon acceptance of the design, the artist will then follow through with the fabrication and installation of the artwork. Safety & Durability The work is intended to be a permanent addition to the Lincoln Center. Design and installation must consider that the work will be situated in a public location and subject to potential vandalism. LincO1nCa06s1dO3-02-07 SELECTION PROCESS A selection committee consisting of three (3) members of the Lincoln Center staff, two (2) members of the APP Board, four (4) members of the Lincoln Center Support League and one (1) City Purchasing Department representative, will review applications and make a final recommendation. The City of Fort Collins City Council gives final approval. The selection committee reserves the right to reject any or all entries at any time in the review and selection process. An artist will be chosen during an initial review process. The artist will work with the Lincoln Center Entryway Project Team to develop a detailed proposal, budget and timeline. Upon final approval from the APP Board and Fort Collins City Council, the artist will be awarded the contract for an amount up to $28,500 for this project. If the design is not approved, the artist will be paid a design fee of $750. CONTRACT /MATERIAL Upon selection and final approval, the artist must complete a contract with the City of Fort Collins. All finished work:shall be faithful to the drawings, design, concept and budget as approved by the selection panel. Luth Description The 280 foot tall Las Vegas Hilton Spectacular Sign, the tallest in the world, was designed through a collaborative effort of all three offices of KL&A; Santa Clara, California, Loveland, Colorado and our office in Golden, Colorado. Severe winds and the signs unusual three-dimensional shape created an unparalleled design challenge. Full three-dimensional computer analysis tracked forces in the individual members, some in excess of one million pounds. Connections, such as the one below, included as many as thirteen members framing in to the same node at skewed angles. The structural steel was entirely detailed in our Loveland office. Cultural, environmental, architectural, historical... the list goes on, but the concept is usually born from a combination of these factors which I try to distill down to a one word title / definition. It's important to me. I collect snow globes and pop-up books... but before you hold this whimsical obsession against me as an artist, let me point out that as a site -specific sculptor, I appreciate the efficiency of space, design and storytelling of these "art forms", as well as my favorite aspect-- they are both interactive. Shaking the snow globe to create added atmosphere, or unfolding the pop-up, which brings to life a three-dimensional world, have influenced my site -specific sculptures. Sometimes human interaction with the sculpture isn't possible or preferred. So, let nature take over. Passage of time, gravity, wind, water, fire and ice are all forces of nature at our disposal. I can't decide which excites me more... watching people interact with my sculpture or watching people observe the kinetic forces of nature affecting my sculpture. I was making dioramas by the age of five, but its funny... 40 years later I find myself making dioramas again, but instead of colored paper, rounded scissors and white paste that you could eat, now it's backhoes, tractor trailers and eighty ton cranes. The best part is... it's still a whole lot of fun! Jim has worked with the Greeley Art Commission on several public art projects since 1999. The most recent project was "Reach for the Stars," a One Percent for Art project. The selected site is at a crosswalk to an elementary school. Jim worked with the school's art teacher and students who created several images. Jim took these images and designed six metal kiosks that adorn the entrance to the school's playground. These brightly painted kiosks contain collages taken directly from the student's art work. Jim worked effectively with the students, the art teacher, faculty, a parents' group, the Public Works Department and the Greeley Art Commission. He also coordinated the, various suppliers and contractors. Throughout the course of the project, specifications and conditions changed. Jim was always very adaptable; agreeable and -open to suggestions and concerns. Jim received rave reviews from the students. One student wrote, "Thank you for: the kiosks, they make our school really stand out! It makes me feel extraordinary. I especially like the art work because you chose our artwork." Another wrote, "They are beautiful because when the sun shines on the kiosks they turn all kinds of colors. I hope they are there for my whole life." The dedication was attended by over 400 people, including the whole student body. The pride felt by the students was evident on all their faces. Jim was recently selected to design and build another One Percent for Art Project. We look forward to another of his creative and unique designs. Collins Museum of Contemporary Art Studio tour. I also had the honor of having my painting of the front of the Museum chosen at the cover art for the Studio Tour Guide Book. It was used in all advertising for the Studio Tour, posters, newspaper ads, all promotional material. The painting, "FCmoca" was purchased for the permanent collection of the museum. 1 was the highest selling artist at the FCmoca Holiday Market this past Christmas, in both sales and pieces. My calendar for 2003 has sold out and is now in its third printing. I presently am showing work from that calendar at La Luz, Mexican Grill. Reviews Amelia Caruso... Where Neo-Impressionism meets the Internet By Diana Montane I first became acquainted with Amelia Caruso when she was in South Florida, quite a few years ago. We coincided at a Diane Arbus exhibit at the Center for the Fine Arts in downtown Miami, where Arbus' celebrated and poignant photos were on display, during a. posthumous one -person show. Amelia, or Amy as I know her, had a camera with her. I don't know how she brought it in past the entrance to the gallery, but one guard noticed, and tried to take it away. She told the guard that she had no intention of taking photographs of Arbus' work. Amy wanted to shoot the people looking at Arbus' work. Amy said she wanted to "paint like Arbus took pictures". As an art critic, this aroused my curiosity and I asked her what she meant. Amy explained how she loved what she called Arbus' "skewed view of reality" and how we are desensitized to the three dimensional image by television and video. When we went on to the courtyard of the center, where we sat and listened to music with other struggling visual artist friends whose work I deeply respect. Then we began to talk about the incident regarding Amelia's camera, and she told us she carried it with her 24 hours a day, to the point where people around her would ask what was wrong if they didn't see her carrying it. She wanted to "record reality", she explained. "Peripheral reality." That phrase stuck with me and became the topic of conversation at the table, since everyone seemed focused on the same imagery and investigation. Amelia then went back to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she continued her formal studies at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, then as an organic move, switching over to photography the second year. Although she has moved from Cincinnati to Colorado to Southern California and back again to Colorado, where she now makes her home, I met up with her again during a recent visit. This time I was able to view some of her work. I saw not only that she had, as she had stated during that sharing al fresco with the South Florida artists after that fateful Arbus viewing, expanded on the Seurat and Picasso early phases, but that not surprisingly, as we now communicate mostly via email, she had also incorporated the intemet into her vision. This series, shockingly, given her Catholic background, but again, not surprising, given her boldness and vision, is about Christianity. Not necessarily and attack upon its imagery for shock value or exposure, but to make a formal frontal, no holds barred, singular statement about the use of the intemet by religious right groups, who use sites and forums on the internet to transmit an obscure and sometimes violent message. Also, she explained it to me, to show how the intemet is used for the diffusion of all sorts of information, including the peddling of views and merchandise, including sex as such. She wanted to exposed the hypocrisy of the medium, just as that one time, during the Diane Arbus exhibit, she wanted to explore the flat surfaces of television and video. Two paintings, titled, respectively "www.marymotherofgod" & www.stpauliscelibate.com" are reliefs with actual computer parts. Amelia's work and responsible and relentless investigation of our contemporary world of hollow images and artistic hype has never been gone for me. I have purchased one of her pieces. I thought she had achieved what she promised she would, on that lazy and warm Miami afternoon when we had all attended an exhibit. Diane Montane is an art critic, journalist. and playwright She is currently the Programming Editor for Univision Online. She is co-author of "Cristina ", the biography of the Hispanic talk show host Cristina. Ms. Montane was art critic for The Miami News and Exito, a weekly published by the Ft Lauderdale Sun - Sentinel and the Chicago Tribune. Tomorrow's Legacy Tomorrow's is 40' x 30' x 20' and is constructed of stainless steel mounted to a sub- surface concrete base, with piers that go down to limestone almost thirty feetin to the ground. Tomorrow's Legacy was commissioned by Hunt Properties Inc. Of Dallas and was installed at the Palisades Central building in Richardson, Texas in 1981. 3. Directions Directions is 12' x 12' x 10' and is constructed of cor-ten steel. It was installed at 6433 Davis Blvd. Ft. Worth TX and was commissioned by Bates Container Inc. in 1986 4. Intertwined 11 Intertwined is 1156' x 6' x 5' constructed of stainless steel. It is speck piece and is available. It was completed in 2002. 5. Hyperbolic Paraboloid Hyperbolic Paraboloid is 10' x 20' x 10' and is constructed of stainless steel with a sub -surface concrete base. Hyperbolic Paraboloid was commissioned by Trammell Crow Development Inc. of Dallas. It was installed at 122 John Carpenter Freeway in Los Colinas, in Irving, Texas in 1983. Page 2 6. The three pieces are the first three sculptures in the set of slides. The first slide is of "Motion II", a piece that I did for charity in 1980. This piece was toured to five cities Promoting art in public places and was eventually sold to Hunt Properties Inc., with the profits going to the Ft. Worth Children's and the Cook Children's Hospitals and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "Motion II" is 30' x 16' x 12' and is constructed of Stainless steel, with a cor-ten base. The second piece in the set of slides is "Tomorrow's Legacy". It is constructed of stainless steel and is 40' x 30' x 20' and is mounted to a sub -surface concrete base, mounted to four piers that go thirty feet down to lime stone for support. This is the same kind of foundation that was used for the ten -story building that it sets in front of. The third piece in the set of slides is "We Three". It is 40' x 30' x 18' and is constructed of stainless steel. It is also mounted to a sub -surface concrete base, mounted to four piers that go thirty feet down to limestone for support. The last two pieces were contracted to be thirty feet tall, but I decided to give my client a lot more for his money and I built them both forty feet tall, over a 25% increase in size. My interest in this project as well as my perspective on public art in general, is to use diverse techniques in fired ceramic tile in ways that complements the built environment and showcases the natural and cultural history of the area.
