In no case shall concrete be placed against frozen ground or against ground containing frost. Except by specific written authorization, concrete shall not be placed unless the air temperature adjacent to the concrete placement is 30°F and rising and placing shall cease when the air temperature adjacent to the concrete placement falls below 40°F as determined by the Local Entity Engineer. When concrete placement is permitted during cold weather, the temperature of the mix shall not be less than 50°F nor more than 90°F at the time of placement. Aggregates or water shall not be heated to a temperature exceeding 150°F. Materials containing frost or lumps of frozen material shall not be used. If heated mixing water and/or an accelerator are used, the above limits may be waived only with written permission of the Local Entity Engineer. When concrete is placed in cold weather and the air temperature is expected to drop below 35°F, a suitable blanketing material shall be at the job site during placement. At any other time when the air temperature is expected to reach the freezing point for a period of 72 hours after placement, the work shall be blanketed for protection of the concrete.
