Deck Addition -Foundation and Framing Modifications
Dear Mr. Kerns,
Shear Engineering Corporation was involved with certain foundation and framing modifications
during deck addition construction at the above reference site. Deck addition plans were prepared by
others and are attached for immediate reference. The following describes the specific foundat ion and
framing modifications accommodated during construction,
It is our understanding that due to existing site conditions, the center deck post/pier was moved over
approximately 3'-0", which results in modified deck beam spans of 6'-0" and 12'-0", respectively.
Shear Engineering Corporation verified that the double (2) 1 1/2" x 11 1/4" PWT treated L VL deck
beam is sufficient for the modified deck beam spans.
Shear Engineering Corporation also provided recommendations for deck pier foundat ion sizes. It was
recommended to provide a 14" diameter pier at the end post with the 6' deck beam span, a 22"
diameter pier at the intermediate post, and an 18" diameter pier at the end post with the 12' deck
beam span. All deck pier foundations to be a minimum of 30" below finished grade.
Shear Engineering Corporation also performed excavation observations for the deck pier foundat ions
on Wednesday, July 7, 2021. These observations were made in order to confirm that deck pier
foundation excavations were completed in substantial compliance with the recommendations
provided by Shear Engineering Corporation during construction.
Following our observation, it is the opinion of Shear Engineering Corporation that deck pier
foundations were completed in substantial compliance with the recommendations provided by Shear
Engineering Corporation during construction.
