Benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene-xylenes (BTEX) and total petroleum hydrocarbon — gasoline range organics (TPH-GRO) concentrations were not observed above the applicable State standards in 14 soil samples collected from the site during the August 2005 UST removal activities. A groundwater sample was also collected from the UST removal excavation on August 17, 2005 and the benzene and toluene concentrations of 1,391 and 3,656 µg/L, respectively, exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) of 5 and 1,000 µg/L. With input from the OPS, a new groundwater monitoring well (MW-10) was installed in the tank removal excavation to evaluate the groundwater quality and compare a monitoring well sample to the excavation groundwater sample. Well MW-10 was installed on October 13, 2005 and the well was sampled on October 20, 2005. The benzene and toluene concentrations observed in the groundwater sample collected from MW-10 on October 20, 2005 decreased significantly compared to the benzene and toluene concentrations observed in the groundwater sample collected from the UST removal excavation on August 17, 2005. However, the benzene concentration of 56 µg/L observed in the MW-10 sample still exceeded the MCL of 5 µg/L. Anticipated Closure Date: The most recent sampling results described above have been transmitted to the OPS. We are currently awaiting input from the OPS on future actions that may be required by them. Therefore, the timing for receipt of a NFA determination from the OPS cannot be estimated at this time. It is anticipated that future activities required by the OPS may consist of VER events, installation of one (1) additional groundwater monitoring wells, completion of additional groundwater monitoring event(s), and/or modeling of groundwater quality beneath the site. Amount. Reimbursed: $80,031 (through 5/7/05; 6' Supplemental Application). The final reimbursement application will be submitted after closure of the site. Contamination Source: Evidence of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination was observed on May 16, 2000 during the removal and replacement of product piping at the site. The area in the vicinity of the subject site has a history of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Please see Paragon's September 8, 2000 Site Characterization Report for historical information. Depth to Groundwater: Approximately 5.1 to 9.3 feet below grade in the 11 monitoring wells between August 2000 and April 2005. Groundwater Flow Direction: Generally to the east. Highest Benzene Concentration in Groundwater (µg/L): 641 in OW-N during August 2002; 1,391 in the UST removal excavation in August 2005. Free -Phase Product Present? None observed in the 11 monitoring wells between August and April 2005. Corrective Actions: Approximately 180 cubic yards of impacted soil from the product - piping excavation was removed and disposed of off site in May and June 2000. Six (6) vacuum -enhanced recovery (VER) events were performed at the site between June 2002 and November 2002, which resulted in the removal of approximately 8,730 gallons of impacted groundwater.. Current Status: The last full groundwater monitoring event was completed in April 2005. Based on the April 2005 groundwater results, a No Further Action (NFA) request could have been submitted to the Division of,Oil and Public Safety (OPS). However, that NFA request was not submitted at that time since the site had been sold and the underground storage. tanks (USTs) required removal. .
