We were therefore forced to accelerate the replacement of the sewer in Seckner Alley to coincide with the replacement of the sewer in Walnut Street in the spring of 2017. We were originally planning a cut and cover replacement of the alley sewer and the cost estimate was based on that premise. However as we gathered information on the sewer we discovered that pipe bursting was a preferred option and would only require excavations at the points of the service connections. The resulting cost reductions resulting from utilization of pipe bursting were as follows: • A temporary electrical system to the buildings was not required. • Reduced bedding material, backfill material, flowfill, and asphalt patching were required. • Reduction in pavement saw cutting. • Reduced utility sleeving. • Only one manhole instead of two required. • Reduced Mobilization.
