Penetrations can be reduced significantly by mounting the letters to a backer panel. This method does however change your design slightly. Each letter will have 2-3 penetrations and the option with the backer panel would have 6. The letters would still stand off the panel and be reverse lit. Please let me know if I should include an additional bid for this method. “ For the backlit option, our preference is a “halo-lit” effect similar to what’s shown in the examples below –rather than a panel backer or chaseway(s). We recognize this approach will require more penetration points into the wall. However, regardless of whether the sign is backlit or not, penetrations will be required and therefore certain conditions must be met. The concrete wall panels at this location are pre- stressed which means they have strands of metal running through them for structural support. Spacing is usually fairly typical but there can be variations within each panel and we must avoid drilling into any of the strands. As long as any penetrations don’t hit the pre- stressed strands and they are caulked/sealed sufficiently to prevent moisture getting into the walls, we can do as many penetrations as required. The selected sign fabricator will be required to seek approval in advance on all installation drawings to ensure that no strands are compromised. Drawings will need to identify exactly where the suggested penetrations would take place. The consultant advising this project is Mike Rettig of EnCon Colorado (formerly Stresscon) and he can be reached at 303-298-1900. 8050 Exterior Signage at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Page 3 of 24 2. Color of LEDs if white what kelvin temp? 6,000-8,000K range (neutral white, not too blue or yellow) 3. Thickness of material for FCOs (Flat Cut Out Lettering) For bidding purposes, please use ¼” thick aluminum for all signs. After award, sign fabricator to advise thickness on larger south-facing signs (backlit or not) since it has larger elements and may require thicker material. 4. Voltage requirements if illuminated? Provide industry standard for bidding purposes. After award, sign fabricator to advise client on this requirement. 5. Sealant required for penetrations of cast wall? Penetrations must be caulked/sealed sufficiently to prevent moisture getting into the walls. Caulk must be minimum industry standard. 6. Is cast wall pre -stressed? The concrete wall panels at this location are pre-stressed which means they have strands of metal running through them for structural support. Hours of access to the archive room? Building access outside of normal operating hours can be arranged on request. Fabricator must provide an installation schedule. 8. Procedure for penetrating roof membrane? There should be no reason for penetrating the roof membrane for this project. In the case of the exterior walls, fabricator will be required to seek approval in advance on all installation drawings to ensure that no pre-stressed strands in the wall are compromised. Drawings will need to identify exactly where the suggested penetrations would take place. The signage on the east facing elevation view specifies non-backlit. Should this sign be made of ¼” thick aluminum material? Yes. 10. The signage on the south facing elevation specifies halo lit illumination. The Bid Schedule requests lump sum pricing with back lighting and without. If we do an option without the backlighting, should the price still include the letters being 3 ½” deep with a clear lexan back, or would you like the non-lit option to be the same material thickness as the east facing elevation sign? The non-lit option for the south facing sign is to be fabricated in the same manner as the other non-lit signage. Please use ¼ thickness for the bid. 11. On the south facing elevation sign, should we assume that there is adequate access behind the wall for the wiring and power supply? And if so, will we need to make a cover over this wiring and power supply? See attached building drawings for access queries. Wiring and power supply must be hidden as much as possible and approved by owner prior to installation. 12. The Fort Collins Museum signage, as designed, will need a variance to allow a proposed sign up to 12’ tall on the wall. The limit per the Fort Collins sign code is 7’ tall, as confirmed yesterday by Noah Beals in Zoning. The variance approval is not guaranteed, and will add about 2 months to the schedule. Clarification: The zoning office is allowing the letters to be up to 7 feet tall and the logo to be up to 7 feet tall as shown on our drawings. Per communication from Noah Beals 21JAN2015, the design will be approved as shown. 13. Is a 3'' return on the illuminated reverse channel letters acceptable? Yes. 14. Is an acrylic polyurethane paint finish acceptable on all characters (illuminated and non- illuminated)? Finish shall be powder coating or comparable treatment for durability reasons. 15. Will an interior/back side of wall cover up wire way, painted to match wall be acceptable for the illuminated sign? Our preference is no chaseways, wireways or visible conduit. This will be approved through shop drawings. 16. Will .25'' aluminum be acceptable for the flat cut out non illuminated signage? Yes. 17. Please verify, Lump Sum with back lighting - this line item will include all the characters of the south facing sign to have halo illumination effect (east facing sign not included in this line item) Correct – east facing sign is non backlit in all scenarios. 8050 Exterior Signage at Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Page 5 of 24 18. Please verify, Lump Sum without back lighting - this line item will include east facing sign characters only (south facing sign not included in this line item) Please provide a quote for both south and east facing sign to be 100% non-backlit, and a quote for east facing sign to be non-backlit and south facing sign to be backlit. In all scenarios, the east facing sign is non-backlit. 19. Will sign permit be a "no cost" from city building dept.?
