This scope of work is pertinent to a City-hired contractor to perform work on the steel pedestrian truss that is stored off
Mulberry Street in the City of Fort Collins. The work will include jacking the truss to level and removing deck remnants
(stay-in-place forms, deck end plates, and deck longitudinal channels).
This welded weathering steel Pratt Truss consists of box shaped members and has parallel chords, a 165’ span, and 24
panels. Floorbeams are welded to the truss vertical members, approximately 10” above the bottom chords, per plans.
Note that bottom chords and diagonal members are in tension, and thus considered fracture critical. Truss verticals are
in compression. Also note that floorbeams are spaced at less than 7’ throughout, and are thus not considered fracture
critical.
The truss is stored in a yard off Mulberry Street. It was relocated here in 2015. Truss nodes, panels and floorbeams are
numbered from north to south, starting with Floorbeam/Node “0” and Panel “1”. Trusses are designated as west and
east. There are bolted field splices in Panel 12. The concrete portion of the deck was removed, prior to its relocation to
the site, but deck remnants remain (stay-in-place forms, deck end plates, and deck end channels).
As the truss sits in the yard, the end floorbeam at the North End (Floorbeam 0) is out of level by ¼” over 2’. There are
timber blocks below the end post bearing plates at this location. The end floorbeam at the South End (Floorbeam 24) is
out of level by 7/8” over 2’. At the south end, there are settled wooden blocks located below the truss bottom chords;
there are no wooden block supporting the end post bearing plates.
Work to be performed is as follows:
1. Jacking of the Truss (to be done first):
• General:
o Jacks shall be used that have adequate capacity to support the structure.
o Contractor will use appropriate jacking method.
o Contractor will provide proper support/blocking between the jack and the bottom chord/sole plate
to prevent damage while jacking.
o Cribbing to be built as the structure is jacked to prevent large fall if the jacks fail.
o Jacks below west and east truss will be simultaneously raised/lowered when jacking one end of the
structure (no differential jacking/lowering).
o Observers from the City and/or Baker will be on-site to ensure no differential jacking or signs of
structural issues, such as torsion, overstressing, etc.
• North end:
o Place jacks below the truss bottom chords, near the end posts.
o Provide support between the jacks and truss bottom chord to distribute load, and to ensure there
is no damage to the bottom chord. This support should be at least as wide as the truss bottom
chord
o Provide support between the jack base and existing ground, if deemed required by the contractor.
o Simultaneously jack each truss until the end floorbeam is level and the floorbeam underside is
approximately 4’ off the ground.
o Provide timber support (ie cribbing) below each bearing plate.
o Lower jacks onto the timber supports below bearing plates, so that the underside of the floorbeam
is at least 3.5’ off the ground.
o Check truss for level before removing jacks.
o Check truss for signs of jacking damage or torsion

• South end
o Excavate soil, if required, to allow jack placement below the bearing plates.
o Provide support/blocking between the jacks and bearing plates, if deemed required by the
contractor.
o Provide support between the jacks and the ground, if deemed required by the contractor.
o Simultaneously jack each truss until the floorbeam is level and approximately 4’ above the ground.
o Place timber supports below the truss bottom chord, leaving room for subsequent jack installation
below the truss bottom chords, near the end of the trusses.
o Lower the jacks so that the truss rests on the timber below the bottom chord.
o Remove jacks from below the bearing plates.
o Re-install jacks below truss bottom chord (near the bearings) and snug jacks up against truss.
o Place supports below masonry plates to allow at least 3.5’ clearance below the end floorbeam.
o Raise jack enough to remove timber below truss bottom chord and slowly lower truss onto timber
below the bearing plates.
o Check truss for level before removing jacks.
o Check truss for signs of jacking damage or torsion.
2. Deck Remnant Removal:
• General
o When grinding all welds and Stay-in-Place Form connection devices, take care not to remove
material from the floorbeams or truss members.
• Stay-in-Place Forms (SIP’s)
o Grind SIP plug welded connection devices flush with the floorbeam top flanges.
o Remove and dispose of SIP’s.
• Deck Longitudinal Channels
o Grind welds between the tops of the deck channels and the truss verticals.
o Grind welds between the deck channel bottom flange toes and the tops of the floorbeams.
o All welds should be ground flush with the truss verticals and floorbeams.
o Remove deck channels from the structure.
o Channels to be stored/removed from the site, as directed by the City.
• Deck End Plates.
o Grind welds between the deck end plates and the truss end posts.
o Grind welds between the deck end plates and the end floorbeams.
o Remove end plates from the structure.
o End plates to be stored/removed from the site, as directed by the City.
3. Final check of truss level:
• After removing deck remnants, do a final check of end floorbeams for levelness and clearance, in the
event subsequent settlement has occurred.
• If required, jack, shim and level the truss before leaving site, following jacking procedures mentioned
under bullet no. 1 above.
