REQUEST FOR CHANGE ORDER 5 – REVISE PROFILE
Scope-1
This change order deals with two different changes:
1. Change the roadway profile to tie back down to existing grades as soon as possible but
keeping the vertical clearance and horizontal alignment of the bridge adequate for when the
nearby development raises the grade and modifies the horizontal alignment in the future.
2. Addition of two more bore holes for geotechnical investigation due to the final configuration
of the bridge.
1. Roadway Profile Change
This change order covers the effort we would need to get the alignment adjusted to tie back to
the existing roadway and to set the vertical profile of the structure for future conditions
We initially set up the alignment and profile to accommodate the existing condition and to avoid
any work within the Railroad ROW so we set a minimum 10’ offset from the Railroad ROW as
our horizontal control element. Vertically, we were controlled by the Gas line perpendicular to
Vine Drive in the vicinity of the structure. We set the bridge deck to provide adequate clearance
for the gas line and other utilities in the area.
When we received the information about the Developer’s plans to improve Vine Dr., adjacent to
their property, we had to modify our alignments, horizontally and vertically, to match their
proposed design. We had to adjust the structure to align with the Developer’s proposed street
section for Vine Dr. and modify the vertical profile to match the Developer’s intent of a constant
grade from the east over the bridge. In developing the profile for Vine Dr. to match the
Developer’s profile, we discovered that the fill slopes along the south side of the road extended
outside the ROW and was not included in the surface contours provided by the Developer. We
discovered the vertical difference when we attempted to find the extent of ROW and Easement
needs for the improvements. After further review, we needed to shift the structure to the south to
provide additional room for the head and wing walls on the north side of the road, which reduced
the distance from the Railroad ROW to 8 feet.
It appears the new profile will probably raise the centerline of the road by around 1.5’ over the
bridge. The horizontal alignment will shift the road centerline around 8’ – 10’ to the north to align
with the future improvements by the Developer and avoid work outside the ROW in the Railroad
property. We can accommodate the developers proposed centerline profile grade by designing
a vertical curve east of the structure that ties back to existing.
This will create a temporary drainage concern because we will be creating a low point in Vine Dr.
on the East side of the structure that we will need to drain. We are able to accommodate future
conditions with the structure but the interim condition will cause a bit of a wiggle in the road both
vertically and horizontally.
2. Additional borings for geotechnical investigation.
a. Arrange for underground utility locates in the project location.

Scope-2
b. Drill two (2) additional bridge borings, to approximate depths of 60 feet for bridge foundation
design recommendations. KDG Engineering will provide approximate locations of the
proposed bridge borings.
c. A representative of Yeh and Associates, Inc. will log the borings in the field and recover soil
and/or bedrock samples.
d. Borings will be backfilled with auger cuttings upon completion. Borings through asphalt or
concrete pavement will be patched with non‐shrink grout or equivalent materials.
e. Borings will be marked by Yeh and Associates, Inc. and surveyed by KDG Engineering.
f. Conduct laboratory testing on recovered samples as needed to classify the site soils and
bedrock. Laboratory tests will include sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, natural moisture
content, dry density, water soluble sulfate content, water soluble chloride content, pH,
resistivity, swell/consolidation and other tests needed for the work.
g. Prepare a draft geotechnical engineering report in accordance with the original proposal
dated June 9, 2017. In addition, recommendations for new retaining walls about 7 feet tall to
be supported on spread footings will also be included in the report.
Upon notice to proceed Yeh and Associates, Inc will obtain a City of Fort Collins permit. Yeh will
notify UNCC to get site utility clearances before the field investigation. Yeh anticipates that they
can begin performing the field investigation within one week after clearance of the utilities and
obtaining access permit. Yeh estimates that the additional field investigation will take two days to
complete and approximately two weeks to test soils. Preliminary geotechnical engineering
information can be provided within approximately one week after completion of investigation and
soil testing and the draft geotechnical report will be available within about three weeks after
completion of field investigation and soil testing. The final geotechnical report will be submitted
after receiving comments on the draft report.
