Description of BID 7543: New Office Building at Nix Farm Natural Areas Facility

To all prospective bidders under the specifications and contract documents described
above, the following changes/additions are hereby made and detailed in the following
sections of this addendum:

SPECIFICATIONS
1. Section 01030 Alternates, Paragraph 1.02 Description of Alternates, Add Item
B. Alternate No. 2 (Add): Decorative Plastic Glazing (Section 08840) at
interior door type B. See sheet A9.3 for door types.
2. Section 02870 Site Furnishings, Eliminate Part 2 Paragraph E, Item 2 Bike
Racks. For bike rack specifications, see Sheet LS501, detail G, Furniture
Schedule.
3. Section 07250 Firestopping specification can be eliminated as there is no

DECORATIVE PLASTIC GLAZING
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 WORK INCLUDED
A. Furnish and install decorative plastic glazing for interior wood doors.
B. Related work specified elsewhere:
1. Section 01015, LEED Requirements.
2. Section 01030, Alternates.
3. Section 01714, Construction Waste Management and Removal.
4. Section 08800, Glass and Glazing.
1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Reference Standards: Conform to the current requirements and recommendations of
applicable portions of standards, codes and specifications, except where more stringent
requirements are shown or specified.
1. ASTM D4802: Thermoformable, monolithic acrylic sheet glazing, Finish 1 (smooth or
polished).
2. ANSI Z97.1: Standard for Safety Glazing Materials Used in Buildings.
3. CPSC 16 CFR 1201: Safety Standard for Architectural Glazing Materials.
4. Applicable provisions of the codes referenced in Section 01060, or as adopted by any
jurisdiction with authority over this Project.
B. Fabricator Qualifications: Decorative plastic glazing shall be fabricated by a firm with a
minimum five (5) years of successful fabrications similar to that indicated for this Project, with
sufficient production capacity to produce required units without causing delay in the work.
C. Installer Qualifications: Installer shall be certified or licensed by the manufacturer of the
glazing system. Use adequate numbers of skilled workers who are thoroughly trained and
experienced in the necessary crafts and who are completely familiar with the specified
requirements and the methods needed for proper performance of the work of this Section.
D. Glazing Standards: FGMA Glazing Manual and Sealant Manual.
E. LEED Compliance: Refer to Section 01015 for submittal and documentation requirements.
1.03 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s written product literature and specifications for each
type of decorative plastic glazing specified.
B. Samples: Submit minimum 12" x 12" samples of each type of specified glazing for approval of
the Architect.
C. LEED Submittals:
1. Credit MR 4.1 and MR 4.2: Product Data or other documentation from material
manufacturer indicating percentages, by weight, of post-consumer and pre-consumer
recycled content. Include statement of material costs for each product having
recycled content, excluding labor costs for installation.
1.04 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
A. Schedule glazing deliveries to coincide with glazing schedules.
B. Deliver glazing materials to the site in manufacturer's original, sealed cartons. Support cases
on both sides when stored vertically.
C. After unpacking, place interleaving protection between individual lites. Keep glazing and
interleaving dry by storing inside where temperatures are above dewpoint. Outside storage is
not permitted.

D. Protect glazing materials to comply with manufacturer’s directions and as needed to prevent
damage to materials from abrasion, scratches, condensation, temperature changes, direct
exposure to sunlight or other causes.
E. Stack individual lites on edge and lean against sturdy supports at a slope of 5-7 from vertical.
Cushion the bottom edges with soft, firm pads free of dirt, grit, glass chips or other foreign
material.
1.05 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
A. Do not proceed with glazing when ambient and substrate temperature conditions are outside
the limits permitted by glazing materials manufacturer.
1.06 WARRANTIES
A. Decorative Plastic Sheet Glazing: Submit manufacturer’s written warranty signed by
manufacturer of plastic sheet glazing agreeing to furnish replacements for glazing units that
deteriorate within specified warranty period indicated below. Warranty covers only
deterioration due to normal conditions of use and not to handling, installing, protecting, and
maintaining practices contrary to glass manufacturer’s published instructions.
1. Warranty period: Manufacturer’s standard but not less than one (1) year after date of
Substantial Completion.
B. Polycarbonate Sheet Glazing: Submit manufacturer’s written warranty signed by manufacturer
of polycarbonate sheet glazing agreeing to furnish replacements for shatter-resistant glass units
that deteriorate within specified warranty period indicated below. Warranty covers only
deterioration due to normal conditions of use and not to handling, installing, protecting, and
maintaining practices contrary to glass manufacturer’s published instructions.
1. Warranty period: Manufacturer’s standard but not less than 10 years after date of
Substantial Completion.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 INTERIOR TRANSLUCENT ARCHITECTURAL RESIN GLAZING
A. General: Clear and/or translucent sheets of polyester-based solid glazing, with specified
design(s) suspended in the polymer matrix, meeting the standards of NFPA 286, Class C1 or CCI.
1. Thickness: 3/8" nominal.
2. Fire Rating: Class A, flame spread of less than 25 when tested in accordance with
ASTM E-84.
3. Sheet Size(s): As required for project conditions, as detailed on the Drawings. Use full
size panels, unless otherwise approved.
B. LEED Design Criteria:
1. Credits MR 4.1 and 4.2, Recycled Content: 40% preconsumer minimum.
C. Approved Design and Manufacturers:
1. Style to be determined by 3Form Varia EcoResin, Salt Lake City, UT, (801) 649-2500, as
basis of design.
2. Manufacturers providing materials of same design, appearance, function, quality and
performance are acceptable.
2.02 GLAZING ACCESSORIES
A. General: Provide products of material, size, and shape complying with referenced or
applicable glazing standard, requirements of manufacturers of glazing materials involved for
glazing application indicated, and with a proven record of compatibility with surfaces
contacted in installation.
B. Cleaners, Primers and Sealers: Type recommended by sealant or gasket manufacturer.
C. Setting Blocks: Elastomeric, neoprene or silicone material with a Shore A durometer hardness
of 85 +/- 5.

D. Glazing Gaskets: Extruded or neoprene molded fabricated into frames with molded corners,
ASTM C542.
E. Edge Blocks: Elastomeric material of hardness needed to limit glass lateral movement (side-
walking).
F. Plastic Foam Joint Fillers: Preformed, compressible, resilient, nonstaining, nonextruding, non-
outgassing, strips of closed-cell plastic foam of density, size, and shape to control sealant
depth and otherwise contribute to produce optimum sealant performance.
G. Glazing Tape: Preformed butyl type, NAAMM SS-1B-68, with integral spacing devices, 10-15
durometer hardness, paper release, by Kawneer or equal.
1. Color: Clear or white for painted wood or hollow metal frames; dark bronze for bronze
aluminum frames.
H. Silicone Sealer: Clear GE Silicone Sealer or equal.
2.03 FABRICATION OF GLAZING PRODUCTS
A. Fabricate glazing products in sizes required for glazed openings indicated for the Project, with
edge and face clearances, edge and surface conditions, and bite complying with
recommendations of product manufacturer and referenced glazing standards as required to
comply with system performance requirements.
B. Fabricate miscellaneous acrylic fabrications using manufacturer-approved acrylic adhesives and
cements to chemically weld joints.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 INSPECTION AND PREPARATION
A. Installer shall examine the openings and framing systems into which the decorative plastic
glazing is to be installed and report any conditions in writing to the Contractor which may
prevent the successful installation of the work. Do not begin the glazing installation until these
conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to the Installer.
B. Clean glazing channels, stops and rabbets to receive the glazing materials, making free from
obstructions and deleterious substances which might impair the work.
1. Remove protective coatings which might fail in adhesion or interfere with bond of
sealants.
2. Comply with manufacturer's instructions for final wiping of surfaces immediately prior
to application of primer and glazing compounds or tapes.
3. Prime surfaces to receive glazing compounds in accordance with manufacturer's
recommendations.
C. Verify site dimensions of all glazing materials that cannot be field cut prior to ordering.
D. Unpack the glazing from cases in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions. Do
not move partially unpacked cases or "end pick" individual lites.
E. Inspect each piece of glass immediately prior to start of installation.
1. Do not install items which are improperly sized, have damaged edges or are scratched,
abraded or damaged in any other manner.
F. Prevent contact of surfaces of individual lites or panels; do not slide one lite over another.
G. Installation personnel shall wear gloves, safety shoes, hard hats and glazing gauntlets at all
times during the handling and installation of the glazing.
H. Protection: Completely cover glazing during spray painting, texturing or other construction
operations that might cause damage to glazing.
3.02 INSTALLATION OF DECORATIVE GLAZING
A. General: All glazing shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's written
instructions and recommendations. Comply with referenced or any applicable FGMA or testing
standards.
1. Comply with combined recommendations of manufacturers of specialty glazing,
sealants, gaskets, and other glazing materials, except where more stringent

requirements are indicated, including those in referenced glazing publications.
2. Glazing channel dimensions shall provide necessary bite on individual lites or panels,
minimum edge and face clearances, and adequate sealant thickness, with reasonable
tolerances. Adjust as required by site conditions during installation.
B. Glazing of fixed hollow metal windows shall be done from the "secure" side of the room or
space. Glazing shall be performed using the dry-pressure preformed glazing channel method,
unless otherwise approved by the Architect.
C. Clean surfaces with appropriate solvent and wipe dry. Cut glazing channel to proper length
and install on panel. Weld joints by butting channel and dabbing with sealant.
D. Locate setting blocks at sills 1/4 of the width of the glazing panel in from each end of the lite
or panel, unless otherwise recommended by the glazing manufacturer.
1. Use blocks of proper size to support the glazing in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations.
2. Provide spacers for all glazing sizes larger than 50 united inches, to separate glazing
panels from stops, except where continuous glazing gaskets or felts are provided.
a. Locate spacers no more than 24" apart and no closer than 12" to a corner.
b. Place spacers opposite one another.
c. Make bite of spacer on panel 1/4" or more.
E. Install glazing with special directional patterns as required to meet the design intent.
1. 3form EcoResin Panels: Consult with Architect prior to installation for direction of
pattern.
F. Install lites or panels plumb, level and square with specified tamper-proof bolts, nuts and
washers.
G. Mask or otherwise protect surfaces adjacent to installation of sealants.
H. Miter-cut and seal the joints of glazing gaskets in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations, to provide watertight and airtight seal at corners and other locations where
joints are required.
3.03 CLEANING AND PROTECTION
A. Protect installed glazing panels with screens of plywood or plastic wherever welding, cutting,
sandblasting, fireproofing, painting or other potentially damaging work is in process.
B. Damaged, scratched, stained or marred materials will not be acceptable and shall be replaced
with new materials at no additional cost to the Owner.
C. Do not mark panel with X or other identity symbol after glazing.
D. Final clean all panel surfaces in accordance with Section 01710, and remove all labels.
