Current situation: The therapy currently has two sand filters serving it. One failed approximately 4 months ago and has been replaced. The second one is five year old. These filters require backwashing 1 time per week and require 3500 to 4000 gallons to clean the sand each week. In addition, fresh water make up for the pool now has a ph of around 8.0 and thus requires extra effort to balance via chemicals. By reducing the backwash events and quantity of make up water, the chemical balance will stay more static and controllable. The two sand filters can be re -used at either the Epic wader pool or at the Senior Center. Filter replacement: By replacing the existing sand filters with Neptune -Benson low water use filters we gain the following: • Water savings of over 95% of a conventional sand filter. • Electrical savings of approximately 12 % due to the lower pump losses exhibited by the Defender filter system and use of frequency drives to slow pumps down when filter is clean. • Natural gas savings because we are not dumping 8,000 gallons of 98 degree water to a sump every week backwashing two filters. The new filter uses 350 gallons per back wash and requires backwashing twice per month. • Higher filtration rate. Sand filters filter down to approximately 8 microns, while the Defender filters down to 4 microns.
