O'Neill II, CPPO, FNIGP Director of Purchasing & risk Management City of Fort Collins 215 North Mason Street Fort Collins, CO 80522-0580 Dear Mr. O'Neill; This 'letter of intent' is intended to indicate my interest in being included on the City's Art in Public Places list of approved artists who may work on city projects during the next two years. As owner/president of Cityscape Urban Design (1983 - 2009) 1 was involved - and often assumed a lead role - in hundreds of successful projects featuring collaborative design teams that included architects, engineers (civil, structural, electrical, transportation, acoustic, etc.), landscape/irrigation consultants, and others. Public officials (City, County, State and/or Federal) were involved as active isteam members or in review/regulatory positions. Examples include Downtown Beautification projects in Loveland, Longmont, and Douglas Wyoming; Wyoming State Fair Entry (sculpture, water feature, and landscape); and site and landscape Plans - including Entry Features - for dozens of master planned neighborhoods and mixed -use developments in Northern Colorado. Priorto my urban design career, I worked as an artist and graphic designer- most frequently with the Colorado State University Housing office, designing and completing large "supergraphic" murals integrated into various remodeling and new construction projects on and around the CSU campus. I am now again focused on the completion of original artwork. An organized team approach has contributed significantly to the success of the collaborative projects in which I have been involved. Key elements of my approach include: 1 Clearly identify team member roles and important points of interaction. .k Understand the needs of all other parties (client, other consultants/design disciplines, outside agencies, etc.) involved. 4- Assure and document frequent communication. 4- Strive for mutual solutions to design problems (i.e. use integrated artwork to help resolve architectural or engineering issues). -1 Encourage "green/sustainable" artwork and other design elements. d Respect schedules and budgets. 4. Have a little fun along the way. I look forward to your favorable review; and to working with APP and the design teams involved in applicable city projects. • Sincerely, ( j Eldon Ward Eldon Ward, 900 Driftwood Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80525 970-229-9951 - eldonward@comcast.net - www.eldonward.com` RESUME Artist primarily focused on painting using water based media; often on recycled building materials. DESIGN TEAM PROJECTS I have been a designer - and frequently project manager - in many, many public and private "Design Team" projects in the northern Colorado area since the early 1970's; typically providing site/landscape design, entry feature design, and/or graphics. I feel this is a great opportunity for me to become involved with Art in Public Places and my community. Art is my passion, and I would love to participate in bringing more art to the public and work along with the design team on projects to beautify Fort Collins. My experience in visual arts is extensive and varied. During my 20 years of working as a sculptor I have accumulated vast design and technical knowledge. Even though my primary medium is stone, I have explored and worked with bronze, steel and ceramics. Before focusing on my sculpture full time I was a painter working with oils, acrylics and watercolors. I enjoy collaborating with others, sharing creative ideas, inspiring and energizing each • other throughout the process. I was lucky to experience this type of creative collaboration while working at the Loveland Sculpture Works Foundry in Loveland, CO., and also while employed as an art consultant at the Fine Art and Frame Company in Fort Collins, CO. In my sculpting career my design team is my client. While working on different commissions throughout my life I have learned the value of listening and of keeping an open mind, as well as the ability to interpret each client's vision. I have always found collaboration in art a very fulfilling and enriching experience. Thank you for taking time to review my submitted materials, and I hope to have an opportunity to become involved in future Art in Public Places projects. C U 0 • July 12, 2011 Dear Selection Committee, I am pleased to submit this statement of qualifications for the Fort Collins Preapproved Design List. I see my role as a developer of ideas that can be integrated into large, publicly accessible parts of a greater whole, so that the project can become more than the sum of its parts. I have extensive experience working on a number of design teams that include engineers, architects, landscape architects and other artists. I feel that I am well qualified for this position. As a public artist, I have worked on projects that include airports, highways, public parks and university buildings. ► listen well, developing the art concept through meetings with the people who use the public space. Each project becomes unique to its setting and users. My past projects demonstrate that I can successfully work with other design professionals and that I fully appreciate the schedule -driven requirements of a construction schedule. Construction, fabrication, and fully integrated CAD production are all part of my day-to-day project activities. Inspired, professional, and responsible, I can manage the artistic process through budget and schedule requirements while producing meaningful, multi -layered work. I have a long-standing relationship with fabricators who build prototypes, who make molds and formliners, cast concrete, and cast metals, and who fabricate various 'art parts' for my projects. I am well versed in working with a wide variety of materials from cast metals, concrete, terrazzo, and stone, to decorative brickwork, fabricated metals, LED lighting and art glass. This depth of • expertise allows me to cast a wide net in terms of elements and enhancements and also allows efficient and creative interaction with the architectural components of a project. I have worked on a number of projects for Ft. Collins including Vivarium Subterraneum and the Northside Atzlan Community Center. Through these experiences I have gained relevant insight into the Ft. Collins cultural, natural and architectural landscape that will be a great help in acting as an artist or design consultant in the area. I appreciate this opportunity to submit my qualifications for the Fort Collins Preapproved Design Consultant List, and I look forward to hearing from you. The experience that I have creating Art in Public Places projects have all been through working closely with design teams on each project. This has ensured that committee members have been happy with the final outcome. Collaborating with teams can ensure that a projects statement is made stronger through being flexible and combining ideas to meet committee project needs. Having an open dialog and receiving feedback is valuable to the creative process. In addition to my experience of working with project teams I have worked with a variety of mediums including steel, stainless steel, polycarbonate, stone, glass, ceramics and exterior and interior paint. • It is also notable that in addition to APP projects I have been awarded, I have worked as an assistant on others including one in Aurora Colorado in 2008 for $215,000. This has given me first hand experience of large and medium scale projects from conception, certifications from structural engineers to installation. I have enjoyed working with design teams and look forward to the opportunity of working with your team. I take pride in creating sculpture that serve as interpretive beacons for public spaces and would welcome the opportunity to work with your team on a future project. My past experience in public art includes creating exterior sculpture made from stone, steel and light for host agencies in various cities throughout the United States. Budgets for awarded projects have ranged upward to $160,000 and I maintain an excellent record of working with design professionals. Although I haven't yet worked as a design team member per se, I encourage you to check my references in regards to my communication and organization skills. I think that you will find that I would fit seamlessly into one of your teams. Whenever feasible, I like to integrate community involvement into the design of projects and have done so on several occasions. I am currently working on my seventeenth public art commission and also have extensive experience creating sculpture for clients and designers in the private sector. My artistic philosophy is that public art is a visual way of communicating the core emotion of any given place or situation. I like to produce visual gestures that evoke reactions at a glance; imagery that makes a visceral connection upon first sight. A secondary level of interest is also important to me. This may include imagery, text or light that the viewer discovers after approaching the work, or after a period of contemplation. Once 6ffered the opportunity to design for a project, I start by thoroughly researching the site to come up with what I feel is the essence of the space. Though my art abstracts elements from nature, as well as the built environment, all of the forms that you see in my portfolio are a direct reaction to my conclusions based upon the research of the site. In closing, when minimalist form is combined with strong anecdotal imagery we end up with powerful works of art that transcend the passing of time. Feel free to contact me if you would like a personal interview or if you have any further questions. Sincerely, Michael Clapper E E N N m Michael Don Clapper 6505 E. Collins, CO 80521 LETTER OF INTENT This is a submission by Public Artist Susan K. Dailey of Fort Collins, Colorado. I am currently on the Design Consultant list. I have been working in the field of Public Art since 1977. I am known for colorful and positive imagery in my murals as well as in my mosaic and mixed media Public Art installations. As a public artist, I've had the opportunity to collaborate with arts committees, project teams, architects, museum curators and engineers as well as with other artists. I enjoy collaborating with other people, and feel like the synergy created can produce great results... often going beyond what one person working in isolation can create .... I was excited when some examples of my collaborative Public artwork were published in the book Mosaic Art and Living Environments by Joanne Locktov. In recent years, I've completed many large scale murals, including an historic grain elevator in Berthoud, CO and a large grain structure (for Golden Prairie Organic Farms) in Nunn, CO. Both of these projects were designed with a team process and both of these murals will be featured on the PBS show "America's Heartland" due to air in Sept. of 2011. In 2008, I had the opportunity to work on the second largest mural in the U.S. ("Fertile Ground"), located in Omaha, Nebraska. I was part of the artist team, painting under the tutelage of internationally famous Philadelphia mural artist, Meg Saligman. All three of these pieces are included in the enclosed digital image CD. • Last year, and earlier this year, I was thrilled to have the opportunity be a part of the design team to work on historic content based artwork for the Linden Street-scape project (as an artist chosen from the Design Consultant List), which is currently in progress. I was excited to have the opportunity to work with BHA designs, City engineers, historians and APP representatives. July 12, 2011 • Cynthia Danielle 2608 Sage Creek Rd. Fort Collins. CO 80528 636-236-3971 Letter of Intent Being a Design Consultant for the city of Fort Collins seems to be a perfect match for me: Throughout my professional art career I have worked with many interior designers, contractors, home and business owners. I am sensitive to the many personalities that come in a team project while maintaining my professional position as the artist, ultimately designing and creating the final work of art. I have always respected my client, the designer who hired me, while also respecting the actual owner who must ultimately be pleased with the finished work. I have often been complimented, by my clients, as a good interpreter of their ideas, coordinator of work and always a person of integrity. In all my past experiences when dealing with a design team and the sensitivity of other peoples' • taste, I first become a good listener and hear what the client is looking for. Second, I sum up the feeling of the area or areas to be changed then express what I thought were good ideas from the other designers or artists and add my input. When there is true professionals' working together the outcome has always been a positive experience. When working on a big project such as Ascension Catholic Church, I not only had to work with and please the head of this church, Monsignor Stehly and his staff but also the large congregation. My first project was to paint a mural in the children's cry room that was visually pleasing and not clash with the rest of the church, since it had a large glass wall that was seen from all areas. My next project was to change the twenty year old faux finish and to make the church more elegant and inviting. When working in a church, one has to be very flexible because of all the activities; children's mass, choir rehearsals, weddings and funerals to mention a few. I feel I accomplished our vision because of the many warm compliments I have received. In addition to design development I will lend my expertise as needed to develop fair cost estimates and manage quality of work for the various projects. I look forward to meeting other talented artists, stretching our, imaginations and inspiring each other, improving our abilities and in turn creating an exciting visual experience. is Cynthia Danielle (O'Reilly) 2608 Sage Creek Rd. • Fort Collins, CO 80528 636-236-3971 http://cVnthiadanielle.com/ 1987: Graduated University of California Long Beach Bachelor of Fine Arts degree 1987-1989: Tanner, Bennett and Hamachi Advertising, Irvine, CA Worked in the art department with ad layout and design 1989-1991 Paintin' Place, Anaheim, CA Worked and collaborated with a team of artists on various projects throughout southern California and Las Vegas. Projects included the Universal Studios Sheraton Hotel where I worked with a team of artists on permanent murals in the lobby and in the swimming pool area. We also painted murals on temporary construction walls. 1991-1995 Custom Creations with Cynthia Danielle (Southern California) • 1 started my own company and began working with local designers in southern California. My works included many murals, faux finishes, as well as commissioned art originals. I worked for and collaborated with many designers, contractors, individual home owners as well as business owners. I personally worked with designers and contractors along with owners of many local restaurants throughout the Los Angeles area as well as prominent homes in Hollywood, Laguna Beach, Malibu, San Diego and Las Vegas. 1995-2010 Custom Creations with Cynthia Danielle (St. Louis, Missouri) My husband was transferred to St. Louis, MO in 1995 where I recreated my business; I began working with local designers and contractors as well as directly with individuals and business owners on separate projects. A notable project included working with a designer and her client, St. Louis Blues veteran Brett Hull, creating a mural where his children were painted into the scenes. Through a separate relationship I created a 2 story foyer mural in the home of the President of the St. Louis Blues, John Davidson. My business flourished during this period and I have too many projects to list individually. Please see my web site. 2010-Present Custom Creations with Cynthia Danielle (Fort Collins. CO) My family relocated to Fort Collins in August 2010 by choice and we love calling Fort Collins home. Since • arriving, I have begun working with local designers Shilling Interiors and ABD Interior Design, also Heath Construction as well as with several individuals on custom paintings. I am presently painting five custom religious scene murals for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic church. List of References Chad and Diana Everett, Owners Success Promotions 14440 S. Outer Forty Rd. Public art opens community dialogue and creates channels for reflection. It is my hope that my artwork will echo the identity of this culturally rich and pulsating community. My approach to figurative sculpture is diversified into representational Americana or abstract Expressionist. The artwork proposed reflects on the setting and activities of a site. They shall emphasize positive interaction for families and friends and speak to multiple generations with universal appeal. I personally sculpt all of my own work; the sculptures are then cast in museum -quality silicon bronze or aluminum. Vibrant color is integrated in some cases dependant on site design needs. I cast my work at Madd Castings in Berthoud, Colorado and all other work involved for the sculpture is done in my studio. I suggest basing the sculpture on blocks of sandstone or otherwise appropriately for each site. It is my desire to work with the public art committee and community stakeholders as a team to ensure a desirable addition to the site and its broader population. I have a long and successful history of public art placements across the nation. Recent projects are "Dawn & Dusk" for a community center in Tamarac, Florida; "On the Count of Three" for a hospital in Grand Junction, CO and "Shadows Passing" for a middle school in Anchorage, Alaska. Among the most significant was in November of 2004, when I was honored, along with the National Sculptors' Guild, in the placement of three monumental bronzes along the Riverfront Park district of Little Rock, Arkansas, leading to the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center. Selected for their ability to fit the surrounding themes and landscape of • the downtown area as well as complement the new Library and President Clinton's ideals of family, cultural diversity and looking to the future. Another significant commission was the "Element Series", depicting four female figures symbolizing Earth, Air, Water and Fire, for the City of Cerritos, CA public sculpture garden. As a Fellow of the National Sculptors' Guild, I have worked with JK Designs and the NSG to place my public artwork since 1994. 1 have participated in projects with budgets ranging from $25,000 to $2.8 million. The team members on these projects have included architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, designers, city volunteers and staff. My affiliation with NSG affords me access to the expertise of nationally recognized professionals including structural engineers, architects and contractors for each project I am involved in. We coordinate with cities, municipalities, corporations and private institutions across the country to successfully enhance both indoor and outdoor venues with innovative artwork. Since 1992, the National Sculptors' Guild has maintained a comprehensive insurance policy, and verifies 'Certificate of Liability Insurance' for each project that its artists undertake. Thank you -for this opportunity to present my artwork to your committee. I hope to with the City of Fort Collins and its design professionals on new and exciting projects for the city. - Jane DeDecker Loveland. Collins, CO 80521 • Dear AIPP Board Members: chevostudios.conl I'm committed to making art that celebrates the ordinary experiences of life in public spaces — artful places that strengthen communities by bringing people together and providing common reference points. I've created over fifty community -based works, and have extensive experience in all phases of design and construction_ I offer an integrated skill set that includes strong interpersonal skills, accurate bidding, effective project management and a soulful dedication to art and craft. My approach involves collaboration, site research and poetics. Collaboration is the key to creating meaningful, durable art that fulfills a complex set of needs and aspirations. I have a background in community development and my process always draws a wide circle of involvement. A few years ago, I had the privilege of working with the team that built the new police headquarters in Fort Collins. Working closely with police and city staff, design/construction professionals, and citizens, my studio created a series of art elements that turned the entry plaza and building lobby into a unified, welcoming space that symbolized a link between the Police Department and wider community. Asa member of a design team, I keep my eyes open and cars tuned for places where the addition of artful elements might enhance the life of a project and the community. I can identify opportunities where art and construction might overlap, to maximize the impact of a budget, and work with facilities stiff to insure that the artwork can be maintained with minimal effort and expense. Site Research: Each place has unique attributes that give it its own life: the cast of light, the relationship of the space to the area around it and to nearby and distant views. The history, culture and civic mission of the site can add to the beauty and significance of artwork. My job is to listen to the place so that those special elements are enhanced and reflected in the project. An example of this expression of place is our recently completed, two-year design/build project at the Grand Canyon, where we worked with twelve affiliated tribal groups to create a landmark plaza that reflects tribal peoples' ancient links with the Canyon. Poetics: The images, forms and words that give life to a project are what I call its poetics. This infusion of heart and soul is the essence of making places that are one -of -a -kind. Even elements that seem purely functional can be made unique and beautiful. Sculptural pieces can serve as seating or play elements, and walls can tell stories. This integrated approach was a key feature in projects for Winter Park and Broonnfield, where I created custom concrete form liners to transform ordinary retaining walls into extended relief murals celebrating nearby ecosystems. The result of this process is art that is both a signature piece and a place to be — a place that people want to be because there is a rich experience for the heart, mind, and senses. The creation of artful public spaces is my life's passion. I look forward to contributing my talents to future projects that enrich the life of Fort Collins' residents. M[: ZPO MIGUEL LcuPvAacrlA Letter of Intent FORT COLLINS DESIGN CONSULTANT I am a lover of research. Not the sexiest thing to admit to, I know. But for me, research is as important to public art as drawing is to painting; it is the bone structure that holds up the muscle. I will utilize this passion to inform my every step in this project. "Thorough research will enable my art to enhance the intentions of the Design Team, to marry itself to the project site, and above all, to flourish within the minds of the center's participants. On half of my 32 Public Art Commissions to date were performed alongside a Design Team. Meetings with a group of Crcatives, for me, can be compared to my years of competitively rowing an eight with a team of seven other guys during college: Leave your egos at the door, maintain the highest level of skill and fitness to benefit the team, support • each other with encouragement, and on race day, maintain steady focus and power at all costs until you cross the finish line (or at least until your arms fall off). I take great pride in my reputation as an ideas guy. I have had steady commissions doing just that; generating ideas. Over time, I have saturated my repertoire of skills to keep pace with my ability to design, after all, I am a design and build artist. To be truly free, it was essential for me to master scores of techniques. I am skilled in all forms of construction: from metal fabrication to sculpting in ceramics, from carving with a chainsaw to casting in concrete, from painting in the realist traditions of the Masters to mosaic production. I come to the Team with the ability to generate innovative ideas and the gumption to actually build the thing! Regardless of which artist you choose, I wish you all a meaningful and productive journey! Interaction with the varied individuals and interests of a design team leads to solutions not of an existing imagination but of a newly created one. Program development with its issues of audience, thematic focus, siting, durability, safety, scheduling, and budget makes an interesting gumbo of needs and wants. The process underscores the significance of art to the quality of life. The goal is meaningful, inspiring public art. I have worked in pubic art for twenty-five years, completing commissions across the U.S. and in Germany and Japan. Increasingly my experiences have been as the artist member of a design team. In Vail I worked with a design team on a new transportation corridor to link the central village with Lionshead. The pedestrian and vehicle route addressed the concerns of many stakeholders. - homeowners, hotels, a firehouse, and a hospital. In Ft. Collins I collaborated with a design team to define and develop public art for a library sited within a retail complex. In Avon, our design team planned a new main street, where integrated public art will help create a new civic identity. This past year I have been collaborating with a design team at the Lincoln Center to integrate art reflecting the center's cultural vision. I am well experienced with the art selection process, both as an art committee • member and as a presenting artist. The diversity of projects has ranged from a city hall to a courthouse, from a human services center to a hospital rooftop, from a roundabout to a portable maze. Public art benefits me every day as an artist and community member. Work as a design consultant would be a very welcome opportunity to assist a widening circle of public art inspiration and delight. 0 REFERENCES Paul M. Nanci Erskine Studio • original paintings in oil, drawings and prints Art in Public Places Board July 9, 2011 City of Fort Collins Dear Committee; After seeing your recent call for design consultants, I decided that I might be a good fit for this role. It's not that I have specifically served in this exact capacity before, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I have done quite a bit of collaborating on proiects during my professional life: Once I became involved in teaching at several universities around the country, I certainly encouraged collaboration among the students in my drawing and painting classrooms There were often group activities resulting in a product in which several people had a (literal) hand. I also facilitated many discussions in the classroom setting. At CSU, I served on several committees, and worked with others in my area to bring in visiting artists several times. I served on the exhibition committee where we worked with the gallery director to select and schedule visitors, and exhibitions that would stimulate and engage the students and faculty. In 1999, I teamed up with a colleague from Front Range Community College to bring a national conference for hundreds of foundations art educators to Fort Collins (FATE). I organized and scheduled the entire two and a half -day program of dozens of panels, and interactive activities. In addition, I arranged for two keynote speakers. This event involved many months of planning and numerous meetings where we hammered out the details and by all accounts people were truly impressed with what we put together. In 2006, while I was meeting with other artists in a marketing group, we decided to approach the Armstrong Hotel downtown with the idea of displaying original work in their guest rooms. Over the course of several weeks, we organized details about promotion, display, and the reception, and it proved to be a unique promotional tool for the hotel as well as the artists involved. Recent art related collaborative activities focus on helping non-profit organizations use exhibitions as a fund raising tool. For several years, I have helped the former and now current Development Directors of the Legacy Land Trust in mounting their annual silent auction art show, attended by several • hundred viewers and buyers. This year, I am acting as a paid consultant to LLT to organize the • exhibition and all related artists' communications. This will involve collaboration with the staff, and also volunteers to put on a successful event. I have also served on the Events Committee at the land trust for the last two years,. This group actively assists in planning, and executing many special events organized each year- a Legacy night, a picnic celebration at Grant Family Farms, and the Art for Conservation art show and sale. We come from different backgrounds, but are good at brainstorming solutions and new ideas, keeping the atmosphere fun and energetic. In my art practice, and in collaborating on larger projects, I believe in starting with general concepts and working towards more specific details. Being flexible and open to change in the middle of a working process is a large part of how I work as a painter. I think my strengths in working in group situations are: communicating clearly, being able to visualize and sketch out concepts, synthesizing random thoughts into a cohesive whole, making sure all stakeholders are heard from, and coming up with creative solutions while helping to keep the agenda on track. I really appreciate when collaboration yields tangible results and a greater product than the sum of the individuals' ideas. I've worked in a variety of artistic media, and have long-standing interest in contemporary architectural and landscape design, as well as public art. After living • in Fort Collins for 18 years, I believe I could bring an experienced point of view to the local design environment and would love to make a positive contribution to a local design team. With a budget of S465,000., this 4- year project was installed in the facility at the time that it was being built In order to manage this process 1 formed a design team consisting of an Architect, Engineer, Lighting Designer and General Contractor. The implementation of the project involved over a dozen subcontractors. Hope, Arkansas (1996 - 2000) 1 was on the design team for the renovation of Elope, Arkansas, President Bill Clinton birthplace. The team focused on the historic train depot and the adjacent downtown area. The public art designs are based on: 1) the history of this small southern town, 2) the legacy of the railroad as sp tranortation and metaphor, and, 3) the town itself as a metaphor for historic opportunities and possibilities. Colorado School of Mines (1998 - 2001) This was a design team collaboration with an architect and with the clientiusers on a new facility for the Department of Metallurgy. The team was involved with designing and shaping the public spaces of the budding and incorporating art into functional elements such as floors, columns, windows, walls, sidewalks and so on. This incorporation of art was focused on the relationship between the ongoing exploration of the Metallurgy Department and its historic roots in the study of Alchemy. Fort Collins, Colorado (1999 - 2001 One of the key components in the renovation of Downtown Fort Collins was the design for a new 900 space parking structure. I was hired by the City of Fort Collins as a Master Planner for incorporating art into the new garage. I worked with architects and City personnel to identify art opportunities presented by the facility, and I also designed terrazzo floors for the stairwells and entrances to the parking structure. Western State College (1999 - 2002) • As part of a design team collaboration, I worked with another artist and an architect to plan site -specific works of art for a new Math and Science building at Western State College. This new facility housed the College's science classrooms and labs, and it offered several opportunities to integrate public art. We planned, designed and installed public art pieces in 4 locations on the inside and outside of the facility. Stockton, California (2004 - 2006) Stockton is an inland California town which is going through a major renovation involving essential infrastrircmre and public amenities. l was hired by the City of Stockton to participate in the design, planning, and implementation of public art for a new downtown parking structure. This integration included incorporating rfrawings into construction documents and presenting design ideas for public review. Colorado State University (2005 - 2006) This thriving State University in Fort Collins, Colorado collaborated with the City's public transportation agency to build an addition onto the Student Union. I was hued to participate on the design team and work with the architects and clients to develop and integrate public art into this facility, the new main entrance to the University. 1 Greeley, Colorado (2005 — 2007) Greeley is a prominent city on the eastern plains of Colorado that has a strong agricultural influence and an exceptional state university. When the City decided to build a new, state of the art Police Department Headquarters I was hired to propose and design integrated artwork for the building's public spaces. The result is an iconographical terrazzo floor and etched glass panels with historic Police Department images. Regional Transportation District (2006 - 2008) Denver's public transportation agency is in the process of designing and building "Fastracks-, a light railsystem that will unify transportation options in the greater Denver/Boulder area. I was hired as a consultant to integrate art into functional elements and station designs for the West Corridor, the first of the Fastracks lines to be designed and built. We have worked extensively with municipalities as well as individual artists and design professionals on projects of varying scales. In the initial design • phase we use three dimensional virtual design and photo rendering to provide accurate visual aids of the completed project; allowing the team to work more collaboratively in the initial stages of a project. We approach each site specifically by addressing its unique social and visual needs. Each site presents an opportunity to experience a public artwork in different ways. We find it necessary to address each of these perspectives distinctly. Drawing inspiration from the context of the site, our conceptual approach to each public art project is rooted in the study of the sites history, the studies of natural and organic forms of the location, and our experiences with community members of the area. We intend to bring unique experience through our passion for making engaging artwork. Our work is meant to foster conversation and establish a sense of place. Placement and material choices are two of the biggest factors in creating successful public art. Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the City of Fort Collins. Sculpture Works 549 Linden View Drive Fort Collins, Colorado 80524 • (970) 416-6347 ejsculptureworks@earthlinknet www.ehckjohnson.com Dear Selection Committee Members, It is with great interest that I submit my documentation and collection of images for your consideration in reference to the APP PREAPPROVED DESIGN CONSULTANT LIST. In the thirty years that I have been creating public art, I produce community sculptures that would contribute meaning to specific settings. I begin by considering social, historic, philosophic and future factors in order to transform a public site into a celebratory ground. Through art, I feel I can educate and contribute to our society in a nonverbal way. The proposed art forms may become favorite treasures in the future, although, fundamentally they should invite, greet, and engage all who experience them. My sculptures tend to be grounded in tangible forms that may evoke thought and initiate contemplation. The juxtaposition of dynamic geometrical elements and curvilinear forms work together in a pleasing balance. The energized spirit, symbolism and craftsmanship are paramount in my work. I have exceptionally high standards and triumph in my site -specific designs. I engineer and review each composition to withstand nature's extremes. My sculptures have been constructed of stainless steel, concrete, and /or fiberglass. These proven, sustainable resources endure a lifetime and are able to withstand any climatic conditions. I insist on expertise and Wreat skill to finish the job, promoting an impact of confidence and grandeur in the final work. Twenty-five sculptures nationally, grace my accomplishments. I have successfully installed in various public settings, managed the fabrication and installation of each while remaining within the budget. I am very experienced in the whole spectrum of the processes involved with public art: planning, permitting, engineering, landscaping, installation and maintenance. Additionally, I am veteran member and have worked on both sides of project design teams and jury committees, Namely, Colorado Council for Art -in -Public -Places, as well as The Mayors Commission of Art, Culture and Film in Denver. I have worked within the Public Art administration by helping establish areas and conditions for the placement of public art, through the selection process for artists, and assisting in the installation and dedication of artwork I have also collaborated with many other design professionals and architects in the course of my career. I encourage you to share any of concerns with my references that I have provided for you. I also invite you to access the accompanying documentation to review, w,pry .(,ncl<cjohnson_com. Amy LAUGESEN • Letter of Intent The objective of my work is to capture the essence of spirit, movement, and timeless story in the sculptural forms I create. The form and function of the horse is a reoccurring theme in my mixed media sculptures and large-scale commissioned public artworks. Regardless of the subject matter, I create my work with durable mixed media that often incorporates re -purposed and/or historical elements. Often, these sculptures appear broken and weathered like objects of antiquity or fading memories. By integrating found objects from the site, the history of a place becomes part of the artwork itself. I am very interested in serving as a Design Consultant for the City of Fort Collins. I have collaborated on many artistic projects from public artworks to museum installations. One of the most important of these collaborations was the Vern Anderson Memorial Bench commissioned by Charles Hay Elementary School. Mr. Vern Anderson was a volunteer at the School for more than twenty years. This artwork was designed by eight students from the school with guidance and fabrication by Michael Cousins and me. This artwork symbolizes three things dear to Mr. Vern -- trains, spinning tops, and teaching kids. What started as a simple bench, evolved into a • flat bed seat with a black, steel outline of a steam locomotive and complete with a working bell. The smokestack is a rendition of Mr. Vern's favorite toy spinning top, while the red boiler shield on the front of the memorial is emblazoned with No. 90; Mr. Vern's age when he died. The wheels are cast concrete from a scale train wheel pattern and the seat of the bench is surround by thoughtful words describing Mr. Vern. Through this project and all of my collaborative experiences, I have found working within a design team format to be very fruitful alliances. Last year I made the bold move to leave a successful position as curator of temporary exhibits at Denver International Airport and focus my creative energy on my own work as a mixed media sculptor. At this exciting juncture and with a renewed dedication to developing my next body of work, I am nurturing many ideas for large-scale public artworks. I am very excited about the potential to create engaging artworks through a collaborative design team approach. Thank you for your kind consideration. (The City of Fort Collins shall not be responsible for loss or damage of artist materials.) MARK LEICHLITER: LETTER OF INTENT DESIGN CONSULTANT RESOURCE LIST - CITY OF FORT COLLINS, CO • I have been involved with many creative projects, each vastly different from the other in their scope and objective. As a Design Consultant for the City of Fort Collins, I would utilize my experience within the realm of public art to help identify and define creative possibilities within development plans. These design team collaborations are sure to elicit pride throughout the community that I am proud to call home by way of integrated aesthetic responses to each new project. Each of my public art commissions has involved multiple disciplines and input from administrators, citizens, and other design/construction professionals. I have broad experience in working with design teams on large-scale municipal and corporate works. I firmly believe that public artworks demand the consideration of multiple points of view, diverse inputs, and compromise. In 2007, 1 was commissioned to create a veterans' memorial sculpture for the City of Paramount, CA. In addition to the sculpture, entitled Upholding, I was also asked to re -design the City's Veterans' Memorial Plaza in collaboration with award -winning landscape architect, Greg Hebert. Working as a team, we created a fitting tribute to the brave veterans of Paramount. In November of 2008, 1 installed two 25' tall sculptures, titled Water & Power, at Loveland, Colorado's City Service Center. The installation also includes decorative multi -leveled artistic planting beds. Through consultation with Loveland's Parks Department, we chose low -maintenance, complementary landscaping to further augment the extensive sculpture site. The intent behind my artwork is to engage the viewer through unique and welcoming • designs. My past work was focused on large-scale, free-standing placements. I am now turning my attention towards artwork that forms a more cohesive bond with its environment, including wall -mounted and suspended work, as well as the incorporation of integrated lighting effects. I have explored nearly every type of sculptural process, from stone carving to casting to fabricated works. Today, computer aided design features prominently in my work, facilitating communication and refinement. of design while enabling me to realize an enormous variety of forms without sacrificing natural resources. For the past fifteen years, I have specialized in large-scale public works that include collaborations with architects, landscape architects, engineers, designers and a host of city planners and community members. Much of my work is focused on the conveyance of metaphorical meanings that relate to themes such as the natural world, the human condition and interconnections between the two. I seek to use environmentally conscious materials and processes wherever possible. These sustainable and technological aspects are of great importance to artwork for public places, both in theme & practice. My past work has employed durable materials including stainless steel, stone, concrete and LED lighting. I find that the interplay between different media serves to accentuate the intrinsic qualities of each material. This juxtaposition adds another layer of interest to the artwork placement. Thank you for this opportunity to be a part of the Fort Collins' Design Resource List. I look forward to rewarding collaborations that will further enhance this great city. • Mark Leichliter — Fort Collins, CO MARK LEICHLITER - RESUME' BIOGRAPHICAL HIGHLIGHTS: • 1994-present Full -Time Sculptor - Fort Collins, CO 1990-1994 Apprenticed Under Sculptor Kent Ullberg; Served as Production Manager, Specialized in Monumental Enlargements 1988-1990 Production Manager, Welder, Monument Assistant at Ostermiller Sculpture Studio 1966 Born in Loveland, Colorado MAJOR COMMISSIONS & PUBLIC ART PLACEMENTS: "Wellspring" 18' high, Stainless Steel/Glass/LED Lighting budget: $125,000 Adams County Government Building, 2011 [in progress] Brighton, CO "Shields of Honor" 8' high, Stainless Steel/LED Lighting cost: $14,000 Colorado State Patrol San Luis Valley Headquarters, 2010 Alamosa, CO "Book -Mobile" 18'high, Aluminum/Stainless Steel/ Rowlux Acrylic, cost: $37,000 Episcopal Collegiate School, 2009 Little Rock, AR "Norfolk Mermaid" 12' long, Fabricated Stainless Steel, cost: $57,000 Town Point Park, 2009 Norfolk, VA "Water & Power" 25' high, Powder Coated Steel/Landscape, cost: $175,000 City of Loveland's Service Center Building, 2008 Loveland, CO "Together" 16' high, Powder Coated Steel, cost: $75,000 Riverwalk Adventure Park - Fleischauer Garden, 2008 Little Rock, AR "Veterans' Memorial Plaza" 1/2 Acre, Landscape/Hardscape Design, cost: $100,000 Paramount Veterans' Memorial Park, 2007 Paramount, CA "Upholding" 14' high, Stainless Steel/Marble, cost: $60,000 Paramount Veterans' Memorial Park, 2007 Paramount, CA • "Public Safety Memorial" 7'high 10' wide, Stainless Steel/Stone, cost: $160,000 City of La Quinta police and firefighters' memorial, 2005 La Quinta, CA "Encircling the Future" 16' high, Powder Coated Steel, cost: $75,000 Little Rock National Airport, signature sculpture, 2004 Little Rock, AR "Tsunami" 14' high 10' diameter, Bronze/Stainless Steel Fountain, cost: $200,000 City of Cerritos Library Park, 2002 Cerritos, CA "Solar Sails" 18' high, Powder Coated Steel, cost: $90,000 Entryway for the City of Paramount, 2002 Paramount, CA SELECT DESIGN TEAM PARTICIPANTS PAST & PRESENT: John Kinkade, National Sculptors' Guild -Site Design/Installation Loveland, CO Greg Hebert, Landscape Architect - Landscape/Site Design San Diego, CA Gregory P. I have been working as a professional artist for over 6 years and as a full time professional artist for the past two years. I am a great candidate for this position because I enjoy working with other people in a creative setting; I am an attentive listener and a thoughtful contributor in conversations. During my entire career as a professional artist I have made it a point to work in a collaborative way. I feel strongly that the best ideas are born out of the input and efforts of many. This type of team art creation takes practice in the avenues of listening, information gathering, compromise, and collaboration. I have attempted to harness these skills in multiple ways. To help in my collective art making skills I create works of art directly with other artists. I work weekly with local artist Chris Gehring, making works of art that we rotate between each other and finish as a team. I also organize and paint in a Streetmosphere group called Viewsic. In Viewsic I work with local musicians, Dave Clapsaddle (saxophone) and Tony Vandaver (Hand Drums) to create a mix of improvisational music and visual art. One avenue that I pursue in my art career that covers all of the aforementioned skills that I feel make up a good team member is with my custom "Finetoon" drawings. These drawings are custom portraits, where the interior of each piece is comprised of images that tell the story of the main subject. With each of these commissioned art pieces I work closely with the patrons in first selecting an image and creating multiple compositions for them to choose from. After that I interview them for information that will be drawn into each picture. During this interaction it is vital that I am a good listener that I am able to communicate my ideas in a way that a non -artist will be able to understand and that I can come to agreeable compromises when necessary. This process is sometimes lengthy but always delivers a piece of original art that the patron actually has a hand in creating and makes the final product more personal for them and overall a more solid piece of art. Another aspect of my art career that has seen me working with a design team is in my public art projects. I have completed four transformer boxes for the Fort Collins Art in Public Places Program. During this process I have worked closely with the design team to create sight specific works of art. I always come to these meetings with multiple ideas, MARK LEICHLITER Professional References: • o Colorado Council on the Arts Jil Rosentrater, Director Art in Public Places Office of Economic Development 1625 Broadway, Suite 2700 Denver, CO 80202 Jil.Rosentrater@state.co.us 303.892.3724 "Shields of Honor" 2010, Colorado State Patrol Headquarters - Alamosa, CO 0 City of Loveland, Colorado - Susan Ison, Cultural Services Director 503 North Lincoln Avenue Loveland, CO 80537 isons@ci.loveland.co.us 970.962.2411 "Water & Power" 2008, Signature Sculptures & Hardscape - Loveland Service Center e City of Paramount, California Linda Benedetti -Leal, Assistant City Manager 16400 Colorado Avenue Paramount, CA 90723-5012 • lbenedetti@paramountcity.com 562.220.2222 "Mockingbird Mandala" 2011, Wall relief for new Sheriff's Office "Upholding" & "Veterans' Memorial Plaza" 2007, Memorial sculpture & park enhancements "Solar Sails" 2002, Entryway to City of Paramount • • MARK LEICHLITER • THE NATIONAL SCULPTORS' GUILD • 1808 ORCHARD PLACE • FORT COLLINS, COLORADO 80521 • TEL: 970.667,2015 0 WWW.EXOCUBICSTUDIOD.COM 0 MARKLEICHLITER@ME.COM PP DESIGN CONSULTANT RESOURCE LIST APPLICATION 2011 DATE:7/13/2011 First Name Joe Address 515 Smith Street Home Phone 970 221-1220 Cell Phone 970 449-2326 Fax Last Name McGrane City Ft. Collins, Colorado 80524 Cell 970 449-2326 mcgrane@colostate.edu July 13, 2011 Dear Art in Public Places Board and City Representatives, Thank you for the opportunity to present my qualifications for the art/design consultant list for city construction projects. The following approach and philosophy is based on the experience of over 25 years of built work and collaborative activity. Approach Every project has its opportunities for art. They are found in the program, setting and larger cultural context in which a project takes place. Art can also be functional. It can be a bench, light, kiosk, bike rack. It can transform the common place into uncommon experience. Colorful, active, experiential art is what I do. It is art that encourages participation. Whether digging for dinosaur bones, activating a sun dial, riding playground pony or searching for wildlife, visitors involve themselves in the artwork. It promotes activities and imagery that connect the user to the site and its cultural context. It is not only visually interesting but can be • enjoyed on many levels of perception. Collaboration, flexibility and an open mind The best public works have evolved through the process of collaboration, participation and respectful support between disciplines. Many of the projects I have been involved in have required this approach. Whether as project designer, artist, or technical consultant, the strength of collective ideation and decision making have resulted in successful, built works. The public art piece "100 Days of Summer" at the entrance to City Park Pool is a good example. City staff and the pool architect expressed a need for an imagable, useful public entry space to the new pool. A number of alternatives were developed resulting in the playful space and waiting area that marks the new pool entrance. " Hidden Habitats" at Nix Farm was a combined design effort with Open Space staff and the city Landscape Architect to create an artful, interpretive meeting space for city programs within a native garden setting. "Water Washes the Earth" was also a successful collaboration with City Storm Water Engineers to incorporate an interpretive element into the improvements along Spring Creek. In all cases architects, engineers, administrators, artists, construction and maintenance specialists worked together to realize a common vision. It is my role as a Public Artist to interpret the needs of the client and the expectations of the user into a functional and beautiful environment that is an uncommon expression of the site and its program, rich with meaning in every detail. Issues of safety, maintenance, budget and schedule are always important considerations. Some examples of successful collaborative art are pictured throughout this proposal. They were either created through detailed drawings that were coordinated through the construction process, fabricated on -site by my own hand, or produced in my Ft. Collins studio. I am excited about the opportunity to integrate art in the city's public works projects. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the Art in Public Places Program in a collaborative setting with architects, artists, engineers, and managers, on projects that will positively contribute to the City. In my role as President of Meridian 105 Architecture, I am actively participating in design and consultation services for both artistic installations and architectural projects. The studio's current project portfolio is split 35% to 65% respectively between these project types, with extensive work being performed in a collaborative team environment. Several architectural projects have been completed under my design and technical direction in addition to many which have been constructed with my contribution as a participating team member. It is a necessity of the architectural design process to work collaboratively and I bring effective communication skills from years of practice in this setting. In the consultant role, I offer an open mind, flexibility, and an excellent demeanor of respect and leadership. . The work performed at Meridian 105 finds common ground in art and architecture, blurring the distinction by merging the philosophy and techniques common to each field. Under my direction, the studio's artistic work is in the medium of parametric and computational design, methods which find artistic expression through mathematics. This process relies heavily on digital modeling software for both design and fabrication, arriving at results by joining technology with artistic vision. The firm's work demonstrates my architectural background. Our pieces are designed as place making elements, intended to be 'experienced' rather than 'looked at', and inviting circulation and gathering spaces within and around. I ask that you include me in the City's Preapproved Design Consultant List. With broad collaborative experience complimenting creative and technical excellence, I offer the capacity to positively impact to the City of Fort Collin's Art in Public Places Program. By working in this • manner the design team can see different ways to approach each site and can have a say in which way the murals take form. These projects have translated in the murals that I have completed for local businesses as well. While working on privately funded projects I have worked in conjunction with local business owners, the historical society and sign and -zoning boards for the city. All of these experiences have led me to become very good at being able to communicate with a multitude of personalities. When explaining the same concept to a fellow artist, an engineer or the head of the zoning board you have to be able to tailor your conversation in a way that makes sense to them. I am an artist that can take multiple viewpoints into consideration in completing a piece of art that makes all involved feel satisfied with. If selected for the position as design consultant for the City of Fort Collins I will bring professional attitude, quality art, and a unique perspective on the creative process and intelligent and well thought out ideas to discussions. Thank you for your consideration for this position. Sincerely, Chris Bates • 7/12/11 Melissa B. Mason Fort Collins, Colorado, 80522 Greetings, Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the Preapproved Design Consultant List of 2011. I believe I have a unique combination of qualifications and skills to be an Approved Design Consultant and Artist for the City of Fort Collins. I have been working as an Interior Designer for more than 20 years and began working as an Artist in 1991 and have worked to acquire a Master of Fine Arts Degree. In my design work I have worked in commercial design doing Micro Electronic • Facilities, Restaurants, Professional Offices and Private Homes. I can read Blue prints and Hand Draw (Draft) plans for my design work. In my Design Work, it is necessary to have a good working relationship everyone involved. I listen and discuss broader areas and details of projects with Clients, Construction People, other Designers, Suppliers, Municipalities and building committees. I have always kept myself open to comments and suggestions of all designers and laborers involved. Always listening for better ways to accomplish each task and at the same time keeping an eye on the project as a whole. Good communication skills are essential and good dependable team work makes for happy and well executed outcomes. One of my unusual projects and cooperative experiences is one where I headed a project to bury power and utility lines in an past neighborhood where I lived. I worked with 19 homeowners, the City of Loveland, a Construction Company, a Surveying Company and all of the utilities that were in existence at that time. The project was completed in 2000, all the home owners were happy and the project was done within a budget. . For the past ten years my priorities have been Art making and looking to establish places to show my work. I have been involved in two Studio Tour Shows and am looking forward to a third this year. I have been involved in other • Art Shows and have displayed my work in a variety of places. My art making . projects include Painting, Print Making, working in Fibers, Drawing, Photography, and Three Dement ional Work in Stage Set Design. One of my ambitions is to get involved in Installation work where I believe my interior Design experience will also be very useful. I have enclosed in this package: my one page resume, this Letter of Intent , information for three references, your design consultant application and a CD which shows examples of my work. Please also see my web page at www.melissaneuville(a)aol.com. I look forward to the possibility of working with you. Please call or email me with any questions or requests. The collaborative effort included another artist, a landscape architect and Merrick ngineering, which was designing new dormitories. Over a year and a half, we produced construction documents to go out to bid that detailed a ceremonial stone mosaic pla a surrounded by a terraced landscape and sculpted stone entry gates. The artistic design included grading, lighting and walkways. also completed a six-month design team pro ect with the Regional Transportation istrict in enver that also gave me considerable experience in long-term collaboration. The light rail design team pro ect was an early integration one for the initial 30 construction drawings. The design team included architects from Parsons, Sasaki Associates and RT , and a landscape architect. For the City of Fort Collins, now have completed three design team pro ects--for Soft Gold Park, Bobcat Ridge Natural Area, and Soapstone Prairie Natural Area. am finishing working on another ma or one for the Mason Corridor BRT line. All of these pro ects were done with positive work relationships and creative outcomes that value highly. My approach is to flexibly seek ways to create a memorable, artistic environment, tailoring ideas and materials to the particular location and concept. ach design team has its method of working but fre uently present ideas that are discussed, narrowed and refined. My design ideas come from research, the existing shapes and surroundings, the site's needs or lacking, and the concept that often comes from the intended use. try to add an artistic, imaginative, humani ing facet in a connected way.
