I want to paint a transformer box in the city of Fort Collins, CO. I believe your organization has set forth a spectacular opportunity for artists and the community. I have been drawing as long as I have been able to hold a pencil and started painting when I was 12 years old. Now at the age of 31, my days continue to be consumed with painting, drawing, and engulfing myself in the culture of this great city. I think that this project gives more color, light, cleanliness, and vitality to our town. It also lets us share our creativity, ideas, and passions with visitors to Fort Collins. Just like others in our community who give back to it on a constant basis such as nurses, city workers, teachers and politicians, as an artist I want to do my part for this city. I want to share my talent and imagination while sparking interest, wonder and • C appreciation for art and this beautiful area in which we live. 0 • Scotty Roebuck Born: 1979, Hibbing MN EDUCATION: 2004 BFA, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO Major: Painting Minor: Art History EXHIBITIONS: • 1997 St. Louis County Fair, Hibbing, MN 2005 Alley Cat, Fort Collins, CO 2006 Starry Night Cafe, Fort Collins, CO 2006 Capsule Gallery, Denver, CO 2007 Gallery Underground, Fort Collins, CO 2008 Aggie Theater, Fort C011ins, CO 2009/11 Luscious Nectar, Fort Collins, CO PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 2009/10 Assistant Curator of Luscious Nectar PROFESSIONAL CONTACTS: Taylor Gallegos Artist/Curator (970) 310-4436 Michelle Buysse WriterNoga Instrutor (808) 384-5796 11 • JULI SCHRADER IMAGE LIST FOR 2011 TRANSFORMER CABINET MURAL PROJECT 1. I have lived in the Fort Collins area all my life and have been working as a professional artist for over 20 years. I've worked on several public art projects through out the years. I love seeing the painted transformer cabinets through out the city! What fun it is to see how each one is disguised in different designs. I would love the opportunity to paint one for the chance to bring joy to others. It's an interesting canvas and a great way to share art! I appreciate the city of Fort Collins allowing art to be expressed on its different surfaces. I have painted many exterior art pieces and feel confident in the materials and technique to be used. My painting style ranges from colorful abstract pieces to realistic animals and people. My sculpture images are all hand painted with bold design and color and although they feature mosaic with glass and grout, I wouldn't be using that technique on the cabinet. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Mason Fort Collins, CO 80524 RE: 2011 Transformer Cabinet Mural Project 2/10/2011 Dear Fort Collins Art in Public Places Committee, My name is Stanley Scott, and I'm a local artist who is very interested in working with the city on the transformer- mural project. I moved to Fort Collins in 2006 to study in CSU's graduate art program. Over these last five years, Fort Collins has consistently risen above my expectations, becoming more than just a city that housed my school, but my home. When I moved here, the city of Fort Collins was listed number one as the best place to live in the country. I found myself in a city filled with friendly people and conscientious businesses, I fell in love with this town and I want it to continue to be the best. I want to contribute to this program, not only because I want to be involved, but because I want it to be the best. I hold high standards for my work in whatever I do, especially in art. I am meticulous, passionate and talented, and I want to put these talents to work for my city. • The project itself is exciting. I love the idea of transforming the mundane into something • breathtaking, making this city, my new home, inviting, exciting and engaging. I want to share my skills and passion for art in a way that will not only beautify our city but also inspire our citizens. I want to be an active participant in the art displayed in Fort Collins. As both an artist and resident, I feel an obligation to share my vision and talent with my community. I have taught drawing and art appreciation classes at the college level and during my graduate studies served in art galleries throughout Fort Collins in roles ranging from installer to director. 1 want to share art with others, and it shows on my resume. I am excited about this opportunity because it asks the artist not only to be a creator, but an educator. I want to meet members of the community while painting, talk with them about process and share a summer day with them. I like this opportunity to reach out to others through my artwork. I enjoy discussing my work and anything art with the public. Please take this portfolio, my national exhibition history and my passion for art as evidence of my expertise and professionalism as an artist. I am excited about this opportunity and the ideas I have for this project. The Inkerers for Articulate City, "Drania," pen and Crayola markers, 6 x 10.5," January 2011 I worked on a series of three collaborative notebook covers for members of a local arts organization. Members receive a blank notebook with an incomplete cover to finish and frame when they are done; this cover is my interpretation of how one might choose to finish it. The interior of the notebook (not shown) lists local venues for performing arts of stage and screen. 2. Cover illustrations for the Aldo 7-elnick series, drawn in Adobe Illustrator and colored with Crayola crayons, 6 x 9," 2009 - 2011 The full color cover illustrations are meant to engage kids with colors and media familiar to them. The references to famous artworks (except Bogus) are meant to amuse adults and to provide a gateway to teaching art history to the middle grade audience. 3. MoCA Mask, "Hairline," pen and colored pencil, apex. 8 x 10," 2010 This was the fifth mask I did for the annual MoCA fundraiser show. My work generally has to do with interesting -looking characters, plays on words and curious back - stories. 4. Legacy Land Trust Art Show, " Lavvs change, people die, the land remains," cardboard, gesso, acrylic paint, appx. 20 x 9," 2010 A quote by Abraham Lincoln was the inspiration for this piece, which serves as a reminder for me of the resilience of this region in spite of its rapidly changing appearance. 5. Human Organics Show, "Portrait of a Lady," cardboard, gesso and lumber crayon, 13 x 22," 2007 Much of the work I created in college and soon after dealt with anatomical drawings, the transient nature of life and consciousness, and the conservation and reclamation of every substance —living thing or functional material —following its use. 6. Alice in Wonderland garbage can (in progress), acrylic paint, appx. 36 x15 x 15," 1999 This is a throw -back to my senior year in high school, when I was asked to paint a garbage can for the library. While my skills have certainly developed in the last 12 years, I decided to include this example because it is similar to the three-dimensional thought to composition needed for the transformer box project. 607 Cowan Street D3 I For Collins, CO 80524 1 (970),112-7111 1 keridraspaiijer,u,yahoo.corri I kendraspanjer.com ILLUSTRATOR, WRITER, INQUISITOR February 14, 2011 City of Fort Collins Purchasing Division PO Box 580 21S North Mason Street Fort Collins, CO 80522 To Whom It May Concern: When I made the decision last summer to leave a very secure, full-time, salaried position, I took a fair amount of flak —mostly from people who don't know me well. The people who do know me well, on the other hand, could sense my excitement about having more freedom to pursue the creative projects that are important to me. My grand designs in 2011 include continuing to illustrate a series of books, starting an organization to hold creative workshops, getting back into my studio to generate a body of work for a solo show —and to finally apply for one of the City's transformer boxes. I've been painting since high scoot, when I had the opportunity to work on a couple of murals and one of the library's garbage cans (which I'm told is still there). Since then I worked with a local muralist, went on to major in art in college, produced work for a few shows and began working as a commercial illustrator. I even helped the Crossroads Safehouse team of volunteers do their transformer box project in 2008 by transferring the design, buying supplies, coordinating work sessions and touching up the painting when they were done. Back in my hometown since 2004, I've watched with interest as the transformer cabinet initiative touched off an entire alleyway and back roads renaissance in Fort Collins. I've seen people of all ages, experience levels and political persuasions get excited about discovering a piece of art that they love and can see any time. Thanks to this project, artists and non -artists alike are engaged, inspired and receptive at the chance to see art in action. I would be thrilled to contribute my time and talents to such an accessible community -focused effort, and I'm honored to submit my materials for consideration. If I can provide any additional detail for the selection committee, please don't hesitate to contact me using the information below. I look forward to meeting you! O'Neill II: As a Fort Collins artist, I would be grateful to be considered for a place on the Arts in Public Places team of artists. I believe that painting a transformer box is a great opportunity for me to serve my community as an artist. I would be proud to list it on my resume and to be a part of a program that helps to make Fort Collins beautiful! I have over 20 years of experience in a variety of mediums though drawing and painting are my forte. My goal, now that my daughter is school -aged, is to focus on my art and create a larger body of work. Most recently I have been working on oil painting commissions - mainly portraits. In 2007, my Koi painting earned an honorable mention at the 17t' Annual Art Exhibition and Sale at the Lincoln Center. I produce quality work that would nicely compliment the current transformer box pieces. I have many design plans that would be suitable for this project. They are representational not abstract, but I am flexible and open to new ideas. Having friends that have painted boxes already, I am aware of the process and time commitment required. If chosen, I will be working on this project exclusively until its completion and will be committed to working and finishing in a timely and professional manner. It is a valuable opportunity to enhance the beauty and character of the City. This significant public art project protects downtown utility boxes from unsightly graffiti as it showcases the creative talent of the city's many painters. The ongoing renovation of the City's cabinets is a high - profile example of the importance of this APP project. For these reasons, I would be honored participate in the 2011 Transformer Cabinet Mural Project. My artwork is generally very bright and colorful -- often described as cartoon -like and whimsical -- with a focus on pattern and motion. I draw from the work of Franz Marc and Paul Klee, but I am also influenced by the graphic talent of Charley Harper and Shepard Fairey. My formal art education focused on painting and drawing, but I have also sculpted relief work and pieces in the round. Even though I have wide- • ranging interest in various artistic media, I always come back to painting as my medium and these paintings nearly always include animals as the primary subject. The cabinet murals that I have created for Fort Collins have featured large groupings of colorful birds, insects and animals. If I am chosen to participate in this year's Transformer Cabinet Mural Project, I would like to explore this concept further, again focusing on members of the animal kingdom. My approach for this year's design will begin with graphic patterning, using stencils for ease of repetition. Animal subject matter will be portrayed in a stylized manner which will be enhanced with abundant color. I believe that my artistic experience as well as my work within the realm of public art will produce successful and aesthetically attractive results. In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to this selection committee for yet another exciting opportunity to enhance the City of Fort Collins. Mason St. Fort Collins, CO 80521 Dear City of Ft. Collins, I am excited to be applying for the Art in Public Places program. For years I have appreciated the wonderfully painted designs and landscapes on the electrical boxes downtown and would very much like to contribute to this project. Last year I applied to the wrong opening thinking it was the transformer project, but was really something else. I felt so silly!! Fine art has come naturally to me since childhood, and I have developed my talent through a wide range of mediums. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from UNC of Greeley and have since developed a modest clientele of local bands and businessmen in the area. 1 have designed many posters for the Mishawaka and other venues over the past few years. Last summer I completed a very large mural for Aqua Spas. I included it as one of my samples... but I wish I had a better photo. Its always blocked by trucks and hot tubs. I want to do • another large mural someday, but for now a transformer box is exactly what I would like to work on. I'm still tossing around some ideas of what 1 want to paint, but 1 think the location of each transformer is part of the consideration. I look forward to being part of this wonderful community art project and I am excited to start painting! O'Neill II City of Fort Collins Purchasing Division 215 N. Mason Fort Collins, CO 80524 Dear Committee Members; This letter and the attached materials are intended to express my interest in participating in this year's efforts to provide quality artwork and discourage graffiti by painting one or more • designated electrical transformer cabinets. It is understood that the cabinets will be painted with designs that meet the Mural Projects team's criteria, and my own style and expression. I would ask that you consider the following as you review my qualifications: y My artwork completed over the past three years has focused on the use of water based media for large paintings: typically ± 50" x 80" - a size not dissimilar to the front face of a transformer cabinet. My designs will consider the local context of the assigned cabinet; and strive to achieve the correct balance of contrast and compatibility with the surrounding area. ➢ My artwork emphasizes graphic quality, 'clean' design and execution, and often includes references to the relationships between the natural and built environments. ➢ I have previous experience painting murals in public spaces. I have extensive previous experience working with the City of Fort Collins. My schedule is flexible and can generally be adjusted to meet the needs of Light & Power and other interested parties. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the design team, the APP Board, affected City departments, and interested members of the public. Since painting the transformer cabinet in June of 2010, my most rewarding projects have been the door I painted for Habitat for Humanity and the large painting of a tree which I titled "Seasoned Optimism". Mason Fort Collins, CO 80524 Dear Art in Public Places Selection Committee. After having the opportunity to participate in the transformer cabinet project in 2007, 2009 and 2010 this has become my favorite project to work on. I look forward to it with excitement thinking of what to do next. It has become a personal challenge to try and create something better each year! My application process is engaging, uplifting and fun for pedestrians to watch. M} 7 technique also lends itself well to the functional side of this project. It is highly textured which helps deter future graffiti occurrences on the cabinets. I am also able to complete these projects quickly which helps to ensure no tagging takes place before completion and final application of the clear coat is applied. Standing near my painting viewers see lively splashes and drips of seemingly unorganized color, but as they step away, "Ah Ha", the lavers of color form images such as birds, bees, and flora. My painting style can be described as an evolution combining impressionist painters "Spirit of Place" and Contemporary applications like Jackson Pollock's dripped paint technique. I really enjoy being a part of this thriving project. Please allow me to work on this mural project in 2011. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincer Lisa J. My paintings are influenced by several different artistic views; Australian Aboriginal dot patterns, Mandelbrot Fractals, Satellite Photos, Bacteria and the concept of visualizing the flow of negative space are all !Ipart of this design. The success of my work is directly related to thine depth of the piece. I want the color relationships and forms to draw the viewer into the painting itself. "Giraffe Love" was designed as a personal assignment and printed on T-shirts that are being sold at Curiosities in Old Town. It was hand sketched first, then scanned into Photoshop and traced digitally with a pen tablet. 2. "Little Jack and the Ceiling Yak" is a full page spread designed for a mock-up children's book I designed for a class assignment. The characters are painted with acrylic on Bristol and pasted on a painted wood panel that was detailed using colored micron pens. 3. "Polar Baby' was designed for my senior degree project and comments on global warming and its effects on polar bears. The baby in the reflection notes the "canary in a coal mine" theory. (Also acrylic on Bristol, pasted on painted wood). 4. "Polar Float" was also designed for my senior degree project. It was inspired by an article I read about northern ice caps melting much earlier in the season, so polar bears are drowning because they cannot swim far enough to find food and make it back safely. (Acrylic on wood). 5. "Snowboard" was designed for the Boston Phoenix Ski and Snowboard Guide in 2009. It was a class competition to land the cover, and my design was chosen over 10 others. (Acrylic on wood). 6. "Day Dream" is a personal piece inspired by a live figure drawing sketch I had done. I had just moved to Ft. Collins from Boston, and wanted to paint a scene that expressed relaxation and • serenity. Letter of intent • I am an artist with a firm belief in making art accessible to as many people as possible in both private and public spaces. I believe the betterment of a community is greatly helped by strengthening its aesthetic assets and foundations, and by creating abundant opportunity for aesthetic experiences for the members of the community to engage in and enjoy. By painting a transformer box I will seek to increase awareness of beauty that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Colorado is a wonderful place to live and its qualities are a wealth of artistic pursuit, whether represented in landscape or taken to the city in portrayal of its people. When a person walking down the street sees a transformer box I have painted they will see the foothills in shades of color they have never noticed there, or the streets of Fort Collins from a view they have not seen, or the yellow light of Colorado's aspen abstracted in moving shape and color against the blue of its autumn sky. I will turn the transformer box into a lens highlighting aspects of the beautiful state and city that we share which viewers may not have • considered, building not only a greater appreciation for art but also for Fort Collins and Colorado. By turning a strictly functional transformer box into a work of art, I will contribute to our citizens' enjoyment of their environment, because I recognize the good it brings both to individuals walking down the street and the community at large, and because I myself love this area. • Abigail Dalton, artist 970.420.1427 abigirla@gmail.com Education 2004-2009: BA studio art with concentration in painting at Colorado State University Jan 2007—May 2007: studied Spanish art history and language at the University of Granada, Spain Notable displays Nov 2006—works displayed at Everyday Joe's Coffee House in show titled Cosmos in Chaos Nov 2008—works part of themed show on social issues displayed at Everyday Joe's Dec 2008—works displayed for exhibition at the FCMOCA May 2009—works displayed for exhibition at the FCMOCA • Sept 2009—solo display at the Loveland Chamber of Commerce Philanthropic work May 2007—work donated for Matthews House flower pot fundraiser Jan 2008—mural painted for La Palabra de Vida school in San Jose Costa Rica Private commissions Dec 2009—landscape commissioned by Brian Delaney —thematic piece commissioned byJenna Portelance —interior art deco commissioned by Athena Dalton —portrait commissioned by Tammy King June 2010—personal gift piece to Danielle Styer • • Artist Image ID List 1. I have admired various completed murals around town for several years and would like to be a part of the process. I can bring years of professional art, mural and public painting experience to the project. For the past eleven years, I have owned and ran my own illustration company, Onepartart, Ltd. Working with a variety of local businesses and private clients, I have created illustrations, murals and a children's book. I regularly work with clients to create concepts that we both feel are viable solutions, executing the pieces until the client is satisfied. I pride myself on being punctual, meeting any deadlines that I set, and run my company based on professional standards. Previous to starting my company, I worked as the Art Director for the Dallas Zoo and the Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park. During my time there, I lead a redesign of the Zoo signage, created support illustrations, wrote text for both signage and the Exxon Mobile Tiger • Exhibit. When my husband and I moved away, I took with me contracts to create a coloring book for an up and coming Children's Zoo exhibit and to write a State Fair exhibit for the Aquarium. These projects as well as previous jobs prepared me to start my own company and help me understand issues with art with which the public interacts. I'd like to be considered for the 2011 program and have enclosed all the materials you need. I look forward to another summer/fall of getting out and mingling with passersby, and adding to the colorful collection of cabinets already scattered around Fort Collins. Each year I work on a transformer, I gain more awareness of what it takes to satisfy the requirements of the Public Works department, and more efficient strategies for working with the paint. And I always enjoy the challenge of coming up with an idea that will delight and surprise people driving or walking by. • My own studio work still centers on organic/botanical themes, with tangled vines taking center stage, but who knows what I might be inspired to bring to life on another transformer cabinet? Out of all of the wonderful projects that you have taken on I firmly believe that the transformer cabinet murals has been the greatest contribution to our town. As an artist that has grown up in Fort Collins it has been wonderful to see and be a part of the creative evolution of this town. 1 feel that I am a good selection for this year's project because of my experience completing murals during the last 5 years. I have been selected to complete four transformer cabinets over the past four years. This work has given me the knowledge on what it takes to successfully complete these unique projects. I enjoy the challenge of formulating ideas to beautify varied surfaces, shapes and environments. This work has led me into painting murals on a variety of surfaces and objects. In 2010 alone I found myself commissioned to paint two transformer cabinets, the complete dining room of Big City Burrito, a delivery truck, and an upright piano. My painting technique and • brushwork has had a chance to grow during the past five years of mural painting. I have completed 13 murals over the past five years. I understand how to create a clean and safe working environment, how to properly deal with the elements and how to conduct myself professionally. I feel that my mural painting experience makes me a solid candidate for this year's project. Another aspect of this project that 1 enjoy and has shaped how I approach all of my mural work is working with the design team. I feel that ideas and visions can be refined and strengthened when multiple viewpoints are involved. I have always asked for, listened to and used the design team's input and suggestions toward my finished products. I communicate well with the team and follow through with set meetings and dead lines. If selected I look forward to once again working with the design team in beautifying a transformer box this summer. Mason Street Fort Collins, CO 80524 Subject: Letter of Intent Dear Selection Committee: I would like to be considered for participation in the 2011 Transformer Cabinet Mural Project. Although I do not reside in Fort Collins, I spend a great deal of time there. I work as a biologist for AECOM Environment in Fort Collins, I am a member of the Fort Collins Portrait Painters group, and I am a member of Trimble Court Artisans in Fort • Collins. I hope my Loveland address doesn't discourage you from reviewing my qualifications. I love the painted transformer cabinets, and I think it's fun to watch new ones pop up each year. My intent for this project is to add some healthy messages within the images. I am a strong believer in taking care of our health and environment, so I would like to paint patterns created by fruits and vegetables on a cabinet. You will see from the work I've submitted that I like bright colors, and I would paint images that would make you hungry for a good thing. Thank you for your consideration. Including my academic training, I have 14 years experience as a practicing artist, who has shown in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado. I live in Fort Collins, Colorado and participated in the Transformer Cabinet Mural Project in 2010. For the Transformer Cabinet Mural Project 2011, 1 am proposing a repetitive design inspired by a popular alternative means of transportation the bicycle. The title of the work is Bicycle. The pattern will be simplified images of bicycles that are repeated in an octagon pattern. The image "busyness" will imply snowflakes. To cover the transformers I will use the most fade resistant acrylic paint, applied by brush. 1 would welcome another opportunity to help beautify the city and deter graffiti by being apart of Transformer Cabinet Mural Project. My family and I moved to Fort Collins this past summer and I have noticed how well you have implemented the visual arts in this community. It is truly refreshing. Now that we are settling in nicely, I am eager to become involved and get some more paint under my • fingernails. Having been self-employed the last 8 years as a decorative painter and an emerging artist in Colorado Springs, I find myself at a new crossroads with our unexpected move north. I am longing to be a part of a creative community and looking forward to facing new challenges and experiences. This time seems to be a chance to reinvent myself while building upon my varying works of the last two decades. I thought your program might be a great start for that. I have been painting here at my in -home studio to try and familiarize myself with my new surroundings. I have enjoyed watching Long's Pond change over the past couple of seasons, as well as the wide open agricultural fields that I am happy to be near once again. I would love the opportunity to be a part of your program. It would be wonderful to meet new people and the chance to create a colorful piece for this welcoming city that I now call home. Thank you so much for your time and your work. It has not gone unnoticed. Sincerely, Catherine Giglio n U 1833 Rangeview Drive, Ft. Color, alone, can evoke emotions that justify my mission. Traditionally I have worked with oil and acrylic on canvas but my mind is never confined to the grounds in which a painting takes place. I paint everything throughout my life, from window wells and gym walls to small sculptures. I love to wrap things with color. I've never experienced a lack of ideas. I cherish the process of planning and problem solving. Learning from my medium is the ultimate goal. Initially I wanted to teach art. I love working with others, but for now I must paint. Time became precious when I found painting. Ft. Collins has been my home since the 3`d grade, it is part of me. As a local resident and fine artist I am very interested in this opportunity. In 2008, 2009, & 2010 I completed Transformer Mural Projects and each one counted as one of my best experiences all year! Public response is always positive and I enjoy being part of this community effort. I am a painter working in oil and watercolor with a wide variety of subject matter. Style -wise my work is very colorful and ranges from realistic to abstract with most pieces is somewhere in between; the images on the CD tell the story better than words. For this project I look forward to collaborating with the Committee and the City of Fort Collins on both subject matter and style. For reference you may contact the following people: 1. Collins, Colorado. My formal artistic training began when I was a teenager at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco; I hold a B.F.A. in Drawing & Painting from the California College of Arts & Crafts and a M.S.M. from Regis University. In addition to being a fine artist, the stops along my career path included time as a technical illustrator, an archaeologist, a land surveyor, a civil design engineer, and land manager. After leaving my last "9-5" job in 2003 I've worked at developing my career as a full time professional fine artist. All of these career experiences provided inspiration and I've made a lifelong commitment to painting and drawing. I am skilled in drawing, watercolor and oil painting. I have won several awards for my work an am represented in public and private collections in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and New York. Currently I am the Education Director for the Colorado Coalition of Artists, a non-profit artists' coop in Ft. Collins, Colorado. I show my work at my studio and in galleries in Fort Collins & Loveland, Colorado as well as on the World Wide Web. The intellectual challenge of painting and the physical joy in the act has influenced my goal to continue to pursue painting and drawing as my primary occupation. Brandi Higdon • Image List 1. Balance —acrylic paint, stone cabochons — 24x6in. — 2007 This is a wooden plank with all seven chakras. Each chakra has the coordinating stone cabochon. This was given as a gift to a close friend. 2. Interconnected —acrylic paint— (7) 6in. wooden discs, total length about 50in. — 2006 This is a seven piece chakra set, all connected with metal hardware. These are painted on branch slices from recycled pruning scraps. These were inspired by a few friends whose generosity knows no limits. 3. Seated Meditation — acrylic paint, rhinestones, beads, scrapbooking paper, ribbon, ink — 6x8in. — 2010 This is a depiction of a seated meditator, balancing all of the energy of the seven chakras. Next to the meditator are the seven virtues that represent each chakra. 4. Crown Energy —acrylic paint, glitter— 17x19in.-2010 • This painting shows the vital life force energy being transformed by the crown chakra. Each layer of petals is a subtle shade darker to show the depth of the 'thousand petals' of this chakra. 5. 'You're So Sacral' Series Part 3 — acrylic paint, glitter, rhinestones, sequins—17x19in. — 2007 This is the third painting in a series that I did after one of my dear friends passed away. This one went to his mother. He was a beautiful person, very'sacral' in his life. The background colors are representative of the higher spiritual energies to represent his energy coming to us from the spiritual plane. 6. 'You're So Sacral' Series Part 2 — acrylic paint, rhinestones, glitter —17x19in. — 2007 This is the second painting that I did in that series, and was given to his [and two of my] closest friends. Again, the background is representative of the spiritual plane, with shimmer to bring in some of the magic and mystery of universe. 0 To: Transformer Cabinet Mural Projects team From: Brandi Higdon Subject: Transformer Bid #7200 Date: February 14, 2011 Dear Transformer Team, As a local artist, I hope to bring a piece of myself and the culture of Fort Collins that inspires me, to this project. Growing up in New Mexico, I was inspired by the beauty of the land, but being in Fort Collins for nearly a decade now, I have found myself amazed and inspired again and again by the people and the culture here. Driven by an annual influx of vibrant and young energy, Fort Collins has a thriving spiritual culture, is constantly evolving towards social progression, and has become an epicenter for the exploration of the healing arts and natural living The beauty of the Fort Collins culture is the guiding force for this project. The seven chakras represent not only the energy centers of the body, but also the virtues that I have found in the people of Fort Collins. The first chakra, the root chakra, represents TRUST, grounding to the earth, and is fiery red. The second or sacral chakra, drives our PASSION, and glows orange. The third solar plexus chakra is brilliant yellow and is the POWER center of the body. The bridge integrating the lower and upper chakras or the spiritual to the earth energies is the heart chakra, green in color, and characterized, of course, by LOVE. Moving up to the fifth chakra, or blue throat chakra, we find the TRUTH with our voices. The next chakra, the source of our VISION, is the indigo blue third eye chakra. The final chakra at the top of the head is the crown chakra. This chakra is depicted as purple or sometimes as the entire rainbow and opens like a flower with a thousand petals that represent our WISDOM and enlightenment. It is my intention to create a piece that includes all seven chakras as the visual representation of these seven virtues, and the spirit of Fort Collins. As an artist, opportunities like this one don't come along every day. I would be absolutely humbled to be chosen, but am confident that I could create a piece that would enhance the ambiance of our city and give visitors and citizens alike, a reminder of the spiritual diversity that makes Fort Collins unique. What better way to decorate the energy centers of our city than to cover them with the brilliant energy centers of the body? This project has brought so much interest and beauty to this city. I want to thank you in advance for all of the time you take in the name of art; it brings tremendous inspiration to our community. In a world where art often takes a backseat to other priorities, I am grateful that Fort Collins still puts value on bringing projects like this one to life. I appreciate your consideration and hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely, J • Brandi Higdon 40 • Brandi Higdon 1723 Morningside Dr. Fort Collins, CO 80525 (C)970-631-5072 (H)970-232-9258 brandimhigdon@hotmail.com • 0 PROFILE i A: As a young child, I went through life -changing and traumatic events that pointed me down a road to self-discovery. After reading several inspirational books, I decided to become a hypnotherapist, and this is where my spiritual journey really started becoming central to my life and focus. I have always been a creator, playing with arts and crafts in a multitude of media, but after delving into the world of metaphysics, I found a love for sacred geometry, spiritual symbolism in shapes and colors, and the seven chakras. There is a beauty and balance in the chakras, the same seven colors as the rainbow, and a gift that I love to give to my friends and family. Over the last 5 years I have been creating different depictions and representations of the chakras, but possess only a few pieces, as they always seem to quickly find new homes. The chakras are a part of me that I try to share with others in creative ways. I am mostly self-taught, only having a few formal lessons in the very distant past. My mother was very artistic, so I like to think that it's in my blood. I also take care in what I design for the particular site/area I am assigned. The first site was in a rather dark area and did not have the long sides of the cabinets facing the viewer. so I designed a concept that was bold and utilized bright colors to attract the eye. The second site was in the center of a parking lot and had a tree next to it; I designed a cabinet showing the four seasons, making it noticeable yet compatible with the architecture and trees of the surrounding area. I have participated in the City of Fort Collins' Art in Public Places' Art in the Alley program for two years and have found it to be both exciting and rewarding. Learning to deal with the dramatic weather changes (Heat! Hail! Thunderstorms! Wind!) as well as painting in public view was at first challenging, but then became very rewarding as 1 learned to handle these situations. I became an astute weather observer after some unexpected weather occurrences and found interacting with the public to be a very positive experience. Everyone I spoke with loves this program and is very supportive of the artists and the APP program that make the alleys and other areas delightful to look at. The Art in Public Places and the Utilities staff were always patient • and helpful with my questions and concerns. It was also fun to develop an efficient system for transporting and organizing everything I needed to work on site. I have learned a lot from painting my transformer cabinets and hope I can put that learning into use this year. In closing, having my art out in the alley for the public to see is a very good feeling. I am happy to write that members of the public have made a point of telling me how much they enjoy illy cabinets. I hope to have another opportunity to repeat that experience this year! Combining my conceptual expertise and passion for design, I wish to create artwork that contributes to the vitality of our aesthetic landscape in the community. I appreciate the Cite of Fort Collins' intentions for this project, since I believe that a.rt in public places is a vital part of enriching our community. Fort Collins, CO 80526 • 970.310.6301 To whom it may concern: As both an artist currently living within the Fort Collins community, as well as someone who frequently tours the Old Town area, I am doubly interested and qualified to participate in the City of Fort Collins 2011 Transformer Cabinet Mural Project. I am a recent graduate from Colorado State University where I studied painting, illustration and completed my Bachelor's of Fine Arts concentrating in graphic design. Seeking now to both enter the professional design industry and share my work with the community I live in, the Mural Project is an opportunity I am very hopeful and eager to participate in. I became aware of the project several years ago when I began noticing the transformer boxes around the old town area, particularly those of Amelia Caruso, found around the Opera Galleria. I found idea of decorating these boxes very clever, and was further impressed at including local artists and providing an opportunity for these artists to contribute to the community. I believe I am qualified, and could make an excellent addition to the group of artists who have already, and have yet to provide artwork for the Mural Project. My background in both illustration and painting, has provided me with the necessary skill sets not only to complete a personal portion of this • project, but to do so with a degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and with a high degree of craftsmanship which stems from holding myself to a elevated standard when it comes to my completed artwork. M chosen style and content is heavily founded in storybook and narrative folk stories, and is ideally suited for a point of interest to passers by. I invite you to call my professional references for more information regarding my artwork: • Cyane Tornatzky — Assistant Professor of Art— Colorado State University cyane.tornatzkv@colostate.edu - 970-491-1746 • Phil Risbeck — Professor of Art - Colorado State University phil.risbeck@colostate.edu - 970-491-6329 or to visit my professional online portfolio at www.afnillustration.com Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, • Colin Kenneth 11 Hello my name is Rolfe Bautista and I am a former Transformer Cabinet Mural participant. I participated last year and I am excited at the. opportunity to paint another Transformer Cabinet. The response to my artwork last year was very positive and having people watch me paint a public mural was a thrilling experience. My favorite part about the process was the ability to engage with people passing by. Their compliments helped to fuel my painting and I am proud to have my artistic skills help better the community. This year I come with experience of what it takes to paint one of these transformer cabinets. I am aware of the challenges that the weather presents and how the painting medium reacts to the environment. With this knowledge I believe that I can push the boundaries of the medium in order to create a truly unique image. I aim to bring vibrant colors to very bland, dingy and overlooked areas. It is my hope that this addition of color and art will help to transform the • surrounding area. The artwork will definitely attract people's attention and maybe help them realize that there is beauty in these often overlooked and forgotten places. 0 •® enn et %vww. a f n i I I u s t r a t i o n. com Graphic Designer • 9 70.3ccIin 10.0301 calimi afnillList ration.com Personally motivated as an artist and Professional and passionately interested in aesthetics, I found an early interest in visual media and the assembly of design elements necessary to complete a project. Riverstone Academy, Lone Tree, CO Chosen over multiple candidates to paint an 11-feet x 64-feet concrete wall in the playground of a very high -end, early -learning children's center. Oliver Paxton Signs 2823 LaPorte Ave. • Fort Collins, CO 80521 February 11, 2011 Transformer Cabinet Mural Project City of Fort Collins S. Howes St. Fort Collins, CO 80521 RE: Letter of Intent Dear Sir: I would like to be considered for the Transformer Cabinet Mural Project being planned by the Art in Public Places Program. I have enjoyed the mural works that have been completed thus far. I think that decorating the transformers is a great way to dress up the necessary, but otherwise unattractive, structures in our city scape. The original designs help to distinguish our city and its talented citizens, while reinforcing and promoting our city's sensibilities. More importantly, the project recognizes the role that art plays in our quality of life. • Through my sign company, Paxton Signs, I have created designs with the intention of improving the visual landscape of our community. By necessity, some of these designs had to be constrained to keep my customers' business image in mind. But, within this context, I often had to include graphics or illustrations that enhanced the visual appeal of the sign. Additionally, I've been commissioned to reproduce the designs and artwork of others which required the faithful reproduction of their original artwork. Such was the case when I provided the first Open Space signs for the Department of Natural Resources. Most of these had full color illustrations of various wildlife species in their environs. Further, it's been my experience when lettering on site and in the public eye, that invariably there is a great amount of interest on the part of passers-by. IC seems that the creative process is both mysterious and fascinating to many and I never tire of the attention that is generated by producing something artistic in public places. To put it frankly: It's a lot of fun! The opportunity to paint my own design and illustrations, free from the constraints of commercial sign making, is highly attractive to me. I sincerely believe that my skill and experience will help make this phase of the mural project a success. Thank you for considering me as a part of this worthwhile endeavor. Enclosed in my packet you will find: • Current resume • A one -page letter of intent. • Image list including, name, title, media, dimensions, date, and description of the artwork. • • Names and phone numbers for two professional references. • Six digital images/disc (total) of relevant work. • A self-addressed stamped envelope for return of notification. With over 15 years of experience in the production of fine arts I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of sizes and mediums. From postcard size drawings to marketing materials designed for city bus placement in Bellingham, WA I have adapted to the needs of the setting and the audience. As an abstract painter I do not often start with a completely finalized concept or idea but rather I just start making marks that are in -line with the desired statement of feeling I want to envoke. I attempt to look at the painting as a whole and try not to focus on what I like, but rather what is working and what is not. With every pass of the brush I attempt to stay in the moment letting the statement of the piece come through. Contributing to the Art in Public Places initiative of the city would be a great please to me and I would be honored to share abstract art with the citizens of Fort Collins in such a public venue. Respectfully submitted, -:T d Darrin Randall Darrin Randall • 3812 Benthaven Street Fort Collins, CO 80526 970.631.8220 www.darrinrandall.com Resume Solo Shows 2010 Untitled Show, Seattle WA Corridor Gallery, Pike's Place Market, Seattle, WA 2006 Sunset In Dark Blue Esteem Studio, Bellingham, WA 2005 Untitled Show Hand to Mouth Gallery, Bellingham WA 2004 Big Circle Little Dot The Third Floor An Event Design Company, Bellingham WA 2003 Gallery Walk WDRC Open House & Art Show, Bellingham WA 1999 Solo Show Coho Cafe, Port Townsend WA Collaborative Shows (Painting) 2010 Valentine's Show Jinx Art Space, Bellingham, WA 2007 All Abstract Show Dear Edison Gallery, Edison WA 2006 Favorite Locals Dear Edison Gallery, Edison WA 2005 The Collaborative Show Hand to Mouth Gallery, Bellingham WA 2001 Collaborative Show Blue Moon, Bellingham WA Juriecl Shows 1998 Beyond Borders Viking Union Gallery, WWU, Bellingham WA 1997 Scholarship Show Viking Union Gallery, WWU, Bellingham WA 1997 Beyond Borders Viking Union Gallery, WWU, Bellingham WA Collaborative Shows (Mixed Media) 1997 Collaborative Senior Show Viking Union Gallery, WWU, Bellingham WA •1996 Ceramics Works Omni Room Gallery, WWU, Bellingham WA Awards And Honors 2004 Volunteer of the year award Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center 1997 Materials Award for Sculpture Western Washington University Publications Cascadia Weekly March 3, 2010 page 18 Artweek, March 1997, volume 28, page 16 Collections Barbara Sternberger, private collection Washington State fJ • U
