The cranes are strung together- using thread, creating a vibrant, textural piece. 2. Unknown; No Title Paper, Thread; 5"x5"x5" NFS; 240 E. Sarah Jane Griesemer 970.310.531 1 slgriesemer@gmail.com Summary: Fort Collins Paper Crane Project intends to foster community creativity, collaboration, discussion and education while crafting an interactive public artwork for the enjoyment of all. Goals: Create permanent artwork demonstrating the power of collaborative community effort Involve residents and visitors as active artists in a collaborative work Foster discussion and education about art and creativity in our community Inspire participants to see art and creativity as viable, approachable parts of their lives The Project: To create a canopy of lasting paper cranes folded by our community, to hang as a "ceiling" above a pedestrian walkway (or several) in the Downtown Fort Collins area. Each crane would be created by a community member, contain a written statement of gratitude from the community member/artist, and be displayed hanging from a wire support structure above the walkway. The resulting piece would be a dynamic and kinetic artwork: beauti- ful to behold, inspiring to experience, fascinating to learn about, and an expression of the power of community collaboration of the people of Fort Collins. In order to involve as many community members as possible, the piece would be assembled through a regular presence in the Old Town Square during the summer months, where visitors and residents could create cranes. The project would also include an outreach program through visits to community centers, schools, summer educa- tional programs, churches, events and festivals, and to those who would otherwise not be exposed to this project in hospitals and nursing homes. Furthermore, the project would be supported by utilizing the power of the internet via social media outlets, a blog outlining the progress and creation of the piece, and a web -based photographic gallery of the project and community -members -turned -artists. It is the aspiration of the project to engage the community at the initial point of contact and to create continuing interaction and involvement, encouraging people to see themselves as artists for longer than the few minutes it takes to fold a crane. Personal Statement: This project is inspired by my personal endeavor of anonymously folding and leaving paper cranes in public places throughout our community over the past year. Each crane was borne of gratitude for the beauty I see in the world and people around me. While this project has been rewarding, my desire is to now involve the com- munity in creating something more powerful than I believe that I, as one person, am capable of. The resulting community artwork would be artist -specific and personal on the singular crane level, and an inspirational repre- sentation of the power of collaboration and creativity when viewed as a whole.
