FORT COLLINS ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM
ART IN ACTION PROJECT
As a participant in last year's Transformer Cabinet Mural Project, I was thrilled to be
given the opportunity to enhance the beauty and character of Old Town. I was also
happy to converse with passers-by as they commented and asked questions about the
transformation of Old Town's utility boxes. Acting as public art ambassadors, the
transformer cabinet artists brought the creative process out of the studio to
demonstrate and inform the public as to the significance of Art in Public Places. I'm
very pleased to be taking part in this year's Transformer Cabinet Mural Project and I
would greatly appreciate the added opportunity to participate in the Art in Action
Project for these same reasons.
My artwork is generally very bright and colorful -- often described as cartoon -like and
whimsical -- with a focus on pattern and motion. I draw from the work of Franz Marc
and Paul Klee, but I am also influenced by the graphic talent of Charley Harper and
Shepard Fairey. My formal art education focused on painting and drawing, but I have
also sculpted relief work and pieces in the round. My experience as a patina artist in the
bronze art casting and architectural metal industries has allowed me to meld the color
and tonal qualities of painting with the metal finishing techniques and three -dimensions
of sculpture.
If I am chosen as a finalist for this project, I can envision many creative ways to address
the various locations involved with the ongoing alley improvements. Incorporating my
painting and metal -working experience, I could create layered metal reliefs painted in
vibrant colors with areas of metal showing through (and sealed with a graffiti clear -coat)
to mount upon alley walls. I could also see this application working in three -
dimensions, as stand alone sculptures. I believe that my artistic skill as well as my work
within the realm of public art will produce successful and aesthetically attractive results.
In closing, I would like to express my gratitude to the selection committee for this
exciting opportunity to once again enhance the City of Fort Collins.
Thank you,
