2009 Art in Action - Letter of Intent — Susan K. Dailey
It is very exciting to be a part of the creative and synergistic energy that is generated when working as part
of a team!
Background: I have been creating Public Art since 1977 when I was hired and trained in mosaic technique
by Denver artist, Darrell Anderson, to assist in the coordination and creation of a public art project on the
Wright Life Building in old town, Fort Collins. This was my first public art project outside of a school
setting. Over the years I have both collaborated with and been on the teams of many artists, and have
worked with many committees. In 2008, I had the unique opportunity to work with nationally known
Philadelphia "monumental' mural artist Meg Saligman, for 5 months, on 22,000 sq ft. mural in Omaha,
Nebraska. This Spring I had the opportunity to work with, John Provensky, Director of the Colorado
Coalition for the .Homeless and with Jil Rosentrater, Director of the CO State AIPP program on two Public
art projects (first two slides).
The Artist Team: For the Art in Action project, we propose a team of three Artists, Amy Brackenbury,
Juli Schrader and myself The three of us have worked together in the past, and we love the energy and
excitement of collaborating together. All three of us are friendly and outgoing and enjoy discussing our art
and creative process with others (we have all taught art). Having three team members would allow
maximum scheduling flexibility. To meet the 25 hours a week quota we would work individually and
together (especially on weekends or on high traffic days)... We would post (around old town) a weekly
schedule so the public would know who and when the artists would be working. This schedule could also
be published weekly so people could plan ahead.
The Artwork: The art piece (or pieces) we propose could possibly be in three (or more) parts and our three
distinct styles would combine to create a unified whole. The media we propose for of our work is a
combination of, painting, mosaic and possibly clay low relief sculptural pieces, all with outdoor coatings to
withstand the elements. The size and nature of the work would of course be determined once the sites are
determined, and with the input of the City project team. We have themes in mind to use as a starting point
in discussion.
Community Outreach Component: Since two of us are performing musicians, and all three of us are
teachers, we would like to submit for consideration, a performance/community outreach aspect to our
proposal that could possibly involve the intermittent services of a writer, support musicians, teachers and
students. As part of our art in action residency, we would like to sponsor short events that occur
occasionally during busy times, to not only help draw attention to the art -in -action program, but to other
aspects of arts and culture in our community as well. We have also been in contact with a representative
from the Fort Collins food bank to brainstorm ideas for inclusion in the community collaborative aspect of
our "performance/art outreach series"... Short performances or events (20 minutes to '/z hour in length),
might occur only occasionally, on busy days when all of the artists are present; perhaps every other week
end or during busy times. We look forward to hearing the input of the city project team on our ideas.
We are very excited about the Art in Action project and feel that as a three person artist team we bring
strong ideas and experience to this exciting concept. We appreciate your consideration .... Thank you
Sincerely,
Susan K. Dailey

Dear Arts in Action Committee,
I am an artist that has lived and worked in and around Fort Collins for my entire
life. I went to CSU where I majored in art and minored in music, moved to Cherokee
Park where I have been a professional artist and musician for 35 years.
I have worked with Susan Dailey and juli Schrader on several big mural projects and
found that we work very well together with similar vision and views about what it
takes to create large, very impressive pieces.
I have taught art at Moca and through the Poudre School District Adult Learning
Program and I enjoy that so much because I love people! This project would be a
blast because I'd get to combine that teaching/socializing aspect with the creation of
art. Life doesn't get better than that!
1'd really like to see a music theme in this art piece that would be a tribute to all the
amazing musicians that reside here. Susan is a professional musician also and we
could put together a couple of spontaneous jams through the summer for special
occasions.
Art and music go hand -in -hand and what a wonderful way to engage the people in
Old Town Fort Collins!

Dear Art in Action Committee,
The Art in Action project sounds wonderful! To have the chance to
interact with the public is very appealing to me. I have been creating
or teaching art most of my life. It has been my pleasure to work on
several public art pieces with friend, Susan Dailey, since 2001. In
2007, we collaborated on a mural in Longmont CO, "Along The River"
at Rogers Grove Park. I have also worked with artists, Eleanor Yates
and Amy Brackenbury on two separate murals. One mural was in the
alzheimer's wing at Blue Grouse Health Care.
I've taught art at the Community Learning Center in Fort Collins,
Stepping Stones a private school in Loveland and at the Museum Of
Contemporary Art. I have taught both adult and children with whom
I shared my love and knowledge of art.
My most resent accomplishment is receiving best of show at the
"Spirit Of The West Art Show" in Cheyenne WY with my "9 Points Of
Light" sculpture. The Philinda Gallery currently represents me in
Edwards CO and the Link Gallery in Cheyenne WY. Two years ago,
HGTV came through town and I was one of the artists selected to
star in the show "That's Clever'. It aired on March 30, 2009 and I
demonstrated the creation of one of my sculptures.
Thank you for your consideration on being a part of the Fort Collins
Art in Public Places.
Sincerely,
