Dear Selection committee, My name is Charles Klanun and I would love to create an amazing piece of art for the Fort Collins community. As a Colorado native, small business owner and resident of Fort Collins, I feel I could contribute some home grown vision of our town. Currently, I am working in conjunction with the DDA on their alley redevelopment project. Specifically the alley between Laurel and Myrtle parallel to College. It would be my goal to have the art I create downtown be a part of the art I am currently working on in the Alley. I believe this would allow for the opportunity for a seamless incorporation of theme and intent. As a resident of the Alley I would like the sculpture to eventually reside in, I feel I have an inside edge on the sensitivities and aesthetic limitations of the culture here. Every day I greet and am greeted by the hosts of people who do business, live and pass through here. The number is sizable. As a graduate of CSU with a degree in Speech Communication, I feel that the action part not only well within my professional abilities, but also something I quite enjoy. As far as the actual creation is concerned, I would like you to consider that I am willing to create it with materials found or donated. I have built many business, all artistically fashioned from found and re -used materials. What better way to convey the progressive lifestyle of Fort Collins than a beautiful sculpture made from the deconstructed materials of the Elks Lodge? This, just one possibility, is more of the intent I have, though I am not opposed to retail purchased material. My artistic history is varied but has remained a constant in all the various work I have done. I have a history of fine art, pottery, welding, tile, stained glass, metal work, painting and even food art. Thank you very much for your consideration in this, Charles Klamm 120 '/z W Laurel St Fort Collins, CO 80524 970.308.2520 Charles Klamrri 1.20 1 /2 W Laurel St Fort Collins; CO 80524 970.308.2520 imaginab]emedium@gmail.com Professional Accomplishments: Algiers, Fort Collins CO. 2005-present: Design and, Coil struction; metal work, stained glass mosaic tile floor, counters, lighting AlleyCat Cafe, Fort Collins CO. 2003-present: Design and constrLiction, metal work . water works, lighting, painting Istanbul, Garden City CO. 2007-present: Design and Construction; lighting, metal work, masonry, tile, woodworking References: Mark Williams: Owner of Alleycat, Algiers, Istanbul. 970.988.6327 Brice Scriver: Professional Tiler 970.361.8504 ART W ACTION 2009 — CONCEPT SHEET Here is a brief synopsis of our initial ideas for concepts. More ideas will begin to take life once we see the nature of the alley sites and get a feeling for the spaces involved. Then we will begin blending our designs as well as working with the spatial dimensions of the sites to fine tune our concepts. Sustainability —"The best is yet to come!" Design Element: What Fort Collins might look like in 100 years. (Low -carbon footprint..... recycling .... CCA gardens..... solar, geo, biofuel and wind energy etc.) History - "Still growing!" Design Element: Diverse cultural groups coming together to create our community. (Native Americans/homesteaders ... ranchers/farmers ... students/researchers ... local wildlife... local businesses..etc.) Eclectic/Bohemian- "The joy of now!" Design Element: People at play, recreating - past, present and future. (This may involve people having fun outdoors, involved in the wonderful outdoor activities available to us in our community. It might also involve music, the arts, film, writing, poetry, theatre, dance, public radio, alternative lifestyles, the spontaneity of all ages enjoying old town etc.) We are not only fine artists; we are experienced teachers of art as well. We understand outreach and engagement! We have many community outreach activity ideas that will make our interactions fun, and we've discussed these ideas and "brainstormed" with fellow teachers and many other knowledgeable community members. We have compiled a list of consultants and potential outreach activity participants. In addition to our interactions with observers, our project will be inherently engaging by its size (large), its colors (bright), its relevance (theme) and its originality (something visually new and uplifting)! We can offer a dynamic, upbeat, family -friendly public art event that will add to the cultural reputation of Fort Collins.
