A key component is the initial meeting with the library after being retained. We will meet with the board, staff, management team and any other stakeholder group that the library identifies. In meeting with the board, we ask them to identify the current position of the library, where it wants it to go and how fast it should advance. We also assess what has worked in the past and what has not. We then enter into a discussion of what are the qualities that an ideal director would posses. We enumerate those qualities and use that list to prepare advertisements and as a checklist when evaluating candidates. In the same visit, we will meet with the administrative team and the staff in different sessions where they are asked what is needed and to identify the qualities that would be possessed by the ideal director. We will share this information within the meeting with the board as useful information on determining if there is a shared vision or if there is a disconnect. This will clearly give the board an understanding of the organizational strengths and weaknesses. We also ask the board, staff and administrative teams to identify the positive qualities of the library and the community. These will be used in the ad and will help identify the unique opportunity of this position. We use these sessions to present and explain the process and to present a timeline for the search. 7.
