RESPONSE - RFP - P1150 GOLF PROFESSIONAL SOUTHRIDGE
DD mm R. MCCLFAdE sal for Golf )ervices Ham 6 e 4a AWENUE C @Ua4 What services do you plan to provide for tournaments, leagues, and special events, as well as cooperation and coordination with the Women's and Men's Associations, the maintenance staff and the restaurant concessionaire? SouthRidge Golf Club is tournament/league central within City of Fort Collins golf. Dale Smigelsky has done an outstanding job of catering to tournaments and leagues and making sure that play is maximized in these groups. I will work closely with Dale in the spring to ensure that leagues and tournaments experience the same level of service they have come to expect from Dale. I would strongly hesitate in changing much, if anything, initially in regards to the way that tournaments and leagues are handled at SouthRidge. In being involved in City of Fort Collins golf for the last 5 years as a golf professional and prior years in smaller roles I have seen the impact that Dale has on golf in Fort Collins. SouthRidge golf is not broken and, even though I would like to make my own impact at SouthRidge, people deserve the same great services that they have had for the past 8 years under Dale's guidance. I would, however, like to offer a tournament tee package catalog to all incoming tournaments and leagues. The catalog would consist of everything from logoed tees to logoed apparel that players can purchase for their tournament or league. This will ensure that each golfer, no matter their skill level or place in the event, will receive something memorable from their experience at SouthRidge. The first order of business when taking over as the Head Professional at SouthRidge will be to meet and greet both the maintenance staff and Mackenzie's staff. I have great respect for the job that Rob Dahl does with Mackenzies and the professionalism of Randy Bonneville and his staff. I know Rob Dahl very well and anticipate we will work well and coordinate well together when it comes to leagues and tournaments as well as daily play. I may be able to offer another perspective to Rob on the concession side of things since I have operated that in some capacity at City Park, especially with regards to liquor and beverage cart. There will be room on the website for the menu and specials, etc for Mackenzies. I also anticipate that Randy, Ken and I will work well together. It will be of utmost importance for me, Rob and Randy to be able to work together and have a common vision for the future of SouthRidge. There is no room at any course for frictions between Superintendent, Professional and Concessionaire. I have always been able to get along with and be friendly with the maintenance staffs and restaurant staffs at whatever course I have been a part of. I will have individual meetings as soon as possible with all league heads and familiarize myself with them and their needs. I will make sure that the Men's and Women's Associations and I are on the same track as far as organization and the day to day needs of the associations. I will make them all aware of the coming website and the benefits of the website to their needs. Revenue/Savin_o to City of Fort Collins ev hiring David McCleave Total Diff. This is a minimum amount based on the above numbers and could increase dramatically depending on circumstances and the new contract at City Park Nine. November 141h, 2008 To whom it may concern: My name is Kathy Knadler, a former long-time resident of Fort Collins. I am writing this letter to express my interest in becoming part of the team of employees if Dave McCleave is awarded the Head Golf Professional position at Southridge Golf Club. I would like to briefly share about myself, my ties to Fort Collins, my golf accomplishments and intentions for a junior golf program at Southridge Golf Club. I was born and raised in Fort Collins and learned to play golf primarily at City Park Nine Golf Course. I competed as a junior in all available local golf tournaments as well as the state level and national level. I was the first girl to qualify to compete on the boy's golf team for Rocky Mountain High School in 1985. I was the Fort Collins Girls Junior Champion 1983-1986 and the Fort Collins Ladies City Champion in 1992. I went on to win the Colorado State Junior Championship in 1986 and was the Colorado Golf Association's female player of the year and Team Captain of the Colorado Junior America's Cup Team that same year. In addition, I was the Colorado State Amateur Championship in 1988. I went on to compete at the University of Wyoming on a golf scholarship and was able to enjoy 4 years at the. University playing on the same team with Dave McCleave. During my time on the team, I was the Falcon invitational Champion in 1989, and had two top 10 finishes at the Conference Championship. Following college, I taught physical education and health for two years at the elementary and high school level and was the director of the summer junior program at Southridge Golf Club. During that time, I received my Class A PGA status and was afforded an opportunity as a golf instructor at Stonecreek Golf Club Instruction Studio in Phoenix, Arizona. I worked on the instruction team with Mike and Sandy LaBauve, both top 100 instructors in the United States. They moved the instruction studio to Kierland Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ where I continued to work as an instructor on their team and as an assistant golf professional from 1995-1997. Directed by The LPGA and USGA Foundations • ORIGINATED THROUGH THE JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION OFARIZONA J•G•A•A -2— Currently, I am the Director of the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Phoenix program with the Junior Golf Association of Arizona, a 501(c)3 corporation. I took over the program in 1998 and received my Class A LPGA status that same year. I direct an average of 23 golf events per year for girls ages 5-18 and their families. An average of 175 members each year are involved in instruction, rules and etiquette clinics, family golf outings, night glow -ball tournaments, scrambles, and stroke play events ranging from 3 short holes to 18 holes from over 6,000 yards. The program is developmental in nature but encompasses the very beginner through zero handicap players. There are over 200 sites nationwide and the Phoenix program is still considered the pilot program with.the largest membership. I continue to serve on the Junior Golf Association of Arizona Board of Directors and served for 8 years on the JGAA Executive Committee. Our goal as a. family in the near future is to relocate back to Fort Collins for the summer months and eventually full time. With that in mind, I would like to share the ideas I have envisioned for creating and implementing an outstanding junior golf program at Southridge Golf Club to encompass the Northern Colorado front -range communities. I will present these concepts in brief bullet points and will expand upon request in any of the areas: • Host site facility for a national LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program. Daily and weekly instruction and skill based tournament `play' for girls ages 5-18. • Beginning through advanced level instruction for boys and girls ranging in age from 4- 17 in 5 day weekly golf camp formats to run June 8t'' through July 17cn • Expand upon current inter -city competitions with 3 and 6 hole playing divisions for boys and girls. • Group instruction "boot camp" for women to learn course play in 5 consecutive lessons. • Provide daily opportunities for individual instruction for juniors, women and men of all ability levels. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best Regards, f Kathy Knadler ANNUAL PAYMENT SCHEDULE STATEMENT The City of Fort Collins will establish a schedule of City fees and charges, and will keep all City revenues generated from green fees, punch cards, annual passes, tournament reservation fees, powered golf cart rentals, surcharges, private golf cart usage fees, reservation fees, etc., and any agreed upon driving range revenues, at the SouthRidge Golf Course. I grew up in Fort Collins and started playing golf when I was eleven at City Park Nine with my grandfather in the spring and fall when he would come to visit. I fell in love with the game and began playing as much as possible. I rode my bicycle to City Park almost every day for 4 or 5 years, carrying my golf clubs on my shoulder, just so I could hit that next golf shot. I worked at City Park Nine from junior high school early into college, doing everything from picking the driving range to working in the pro shop. My experiences early on at Fort Collins golf courses made my mind up that I would one day be a PGA Professional. I attended Poudre High School, playing on the golf team, and attended the University of Wyoming, on a golf scholarship, from 1987-1992. 1 won four collegiate events and became the first, and only to this date, All - American golfer at UW. I was inducted into the University of Wyoming Sports Hall of Fame in September of 2007, as the only golfer ever. I turned professional in 1992 and moved to Florida to pursue a playing career in golf. I played the Hooters Tour from 1993 to 1994, attending PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1993. Shortly after starting on this path I knew that being a Tour Professional was not for me and that being a member of the PGA of America, working in the golf business; was truly what I wanted to do. In 19941 became the First Assistant at Boomerang Links in Greeley, Colorado, working for Kenny Anderson and Bob McNamee, both PGA Professionals. I was at Boomerang for 10 years in that position, earning Class "A" PGA status in March of 1999. In January of 2004 1 was lucky enough to be chosen as the Head Professional at City Park Nine, completing a journey that started when I was eleven, riding my bike to the course to do something I loved. I am still doing something that I love as a PGA Professional. Working in the golf industry for the past 15 years, experiencing tremendous growth in the game and now decline in popularity for whatever reason, I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience in being a successful golf professional. Customer service, relationships with fellow golfers and now, recruiting players have been, and will continue to be, the most important areas of focus for me at any facility where I am the Golf Professional. At City Park I have been lucky enough to have an excellent staff working for me, many of whom have been with me for nearly 5 years. I pride myself in having a friendly, professional staff that makes golfers want to come back and play City Park. I have grown the golf population in Fort Collins specifically through teaching, mostly juniors and CSU students, and beginning new leagues and associations to attract players. I also have a vast experience in running and attracting tournaments. At Boomerang Links we hosted and ran nearly 100 golf tournaments every year. Also while I was at Boomerang I was the golf coach at Northridge High School, coaching and mentoring students in the game of golf for 4 years. In closing, I know that I have immeasurable experience in the game of golf and the business of running a successful golf course. Much of my success is due to the experiences growing up in Fort Collins, playing all the courses, and being around all of the great PGA Professionals that have been in Fort Collins. I believe that success as a Professional comes from treating people personally as you would have them treat you and developing relationships with them instead of treating them as solely a customer and try to remember this each day I come to the "job" I love. r What qualifications will you require of your assistant(s), other employees and volunteers? Outline your staffing plans for peak, transitional and off-season times. The number one job of all of us in the golf industry is to get people to come play your course and keep them coming back. Golfers come back in large part due to their experience with the employees that work there. The number one qualification for any employee of mine is people skills. I will require that all my employees be very personable and experienced with the general public. At City Park my staff has done an excellent job of creating and building relationships with the golfers that come and play there, thereby increasing play and City monies. Secondary to people skills, I will require that my assistant(s) be working towards a career in golf and working towards PGA of America membership. It is important for a facility to hire a PGA Professional because the symbol and the logo create instant credibility among golfers. PGA Professionals have better training, in many instances years of training, which allows them to be better prepared to handle the challenges of the golf business right now. I will require that all my employees be neat in appearance, honest and trustworthy, take pride and ownership of the job they are doing and be as passionate about golf and people as I am. During peak times the course will be staffed with me or my assistant(s), many times both. I will require that a ranger be on the course from 8:00 in the morning until at least 8:00 in the evening during peak times as well. I will also require that at least one seasonal worker be on site as well during peak times. I am a hands-on Golf Professional so I will be behind the counter greeting customers, marshalling the golf course and doing anything else I would require of all my employees. During transitional and off-season times the course will be staffed much the same, dictated by play. The only difference one may see is that the Golf Professionals may be "seen" more. This means less seasonal help and more "hands-on" by the professionals. The golf course will still be marshaled in the same manner although the times may be streamlined based on playable hours. At the slowest times in the year the course will mainly be staffed by me and/or my assistant(s). Over and above anything else I will emphasize the quality of individuals working at SouthRidge, not the quantity. If there is one thing I have learned in the past 15 years in the golf business it's that quality employees are invaluable to any operation. One employee with passion and great people skills is far more valuable to an operation than two or three employees lacking in those areas. With these things in mind I plan to bring all of my excellent staff with me to SouthRidge should I be chosen for the position, including Matt Magley, my current assistant. I will have enough great staff on hand to provide the greatest customer service possible and handle any amount of play dictated by the business at SouthRidge. 0 What conditions, needs or requirements do you see at SouthRidge, and how will you deal with them? I think that Dale Smigelsky has done an incredible job, especially in tough economic times, of attracting golfers to play at SouthRidge. The City of Fort Collins must agree with me and has made him the Golf Professional at Collindale. Therefore, I plan to change very little in the beginning and hope to run things very much like Dale has in the past. If anything, I would like to add to the rock solid foundation at SouthRidge left by Dale. I realize that much of the afternoon play at SouthRidge is league play. It is very important that league play be kept as a priority. I will make sure to contact all leagues to introduce myself and insure them that the level of professionalism will be the same and seeing if we can do more for them. I will then see where there is room for new league play. Late afternoon play on Fridays and Saturdays is a great time to have a couple's league started and late afternoons on Sundays in the summer would be great for a league or event involving all of the family. Tournament play makes up a huge portion of the revenue generated at SouthRidge during the prime golfing season. Not only do tournament fees collected add something extra for the City but tournament play is guaranteed revenue. It is important to do all that we can to maximize tournament revenues. I will call all people and organizations that have a scheduled event at SouthRidge for 2009 and introduce myself and assure them of the same great level of customer service that Dale has provided them. It is very important to strive to increase tournament/league rounds as well. I think we can do this by actively canvassing the Northern Colorado area seeing if we can be of service to any business or organization. Instead of waiting for tournaments/leagues to come to us and letting someone else do all the leg work we will make it easy on them by doing all the work ourselves. We will make a better use of the Vermont Systems POS by using it as a tee sheet and to check people in. Currently at Collindale and SouthRidge the paper tee sheet is still in use. Although this is the system that the professionals have used there I think it is in Fort Collins' best interest to have courses use the tee sheet on Golf Trac. It is much easier for the City to keep track of rounds, carts and other monies and to forecast future revenues if we all fully use Golf Trac. Southridge needs its own website. We have developed our own website at City Park Nine and it has been a huge success so far. It would be fully capable of outlining everything that is going on at SouthRidge. Events, leagues, golf lessons, merchandise sales and available merchandise, amenities, pictures and much more will be posted on this website. It can also be used for employees and volunteers for scheduling, etc. Golfers can also contact us through the website as well. The potential reach for something like this is immense and very little cost will be involved. The pro shop at SouthRidge needs an image overhaul. Keeping in mind that the shop space at the club is extremely small, I would like to give it a more upscale feel. At this point, when you walk in the door you get a slightly cluttered feeling, giving the image more of a discount store and not of a pro shop at a great course: I would give it this feel by installing new fixtures throughout the shop, with a more classic, homey feel. Also, getting as much merchandise up off of the floor as possible and not putting everything out at once are changes that need to be made to help utilize what little space there is at SouthRidge. What are your plans and related strengths and weaknesses to operate the SouthRidge Pro Shop and Driving Range with regards to: Merchandise, Services Offered, Customer Services and Teaching? In the merchandise area, I will do my best to offer products that fit in with the clientele at SouthRidge while including the "latest and greatest" equipment and apparel that the golf industry has to offer. SouthRidge has a slightly more upscale clientele than the other public courses in town and also hosts a lot of outside events. This means that I will have a wide range of possibly perceived upscale items while having many items under $50 that someone winning a gift certificate in an event can purchase without coming up with any out of pocket money. Ping, Nike, Bridgestone, Underarmour and Gear are companies I currently work with. They will be combined with Titleist and Taylor Made, among others, to provide the best in equipment and apparel at SouthRidge. I will not compete with Dale at Collindale and whoever is the Golf Professional at City Park Nine in any area of merchandise. If I am carrying anything that the other Pro's are carrying I will make sure to have the same price as they do. I will not under cut any other PGA Professional the City employs. We should all be working as a team and have done so since my being employed at City Park. With respect to services offered, I would like to have a club repair shop continue to operate in its current spot at the course. This is an important amenity that helps to give SouthRidge an upscale image. I would also like to add a "locker room" to the clubhouse. This would not be the traditional locker room, set with bathrooms, one each for men and women, but just a space with maybe 20 lockers where people can store their clubs or gear for the year. Another service that will be offered to customers and potential customers is the SouthRidge website, as outlined in question 3 of the proposal. Again, the website will allow players and potential customers to preview coming events, check stats and scoring for leagues and tournament, see specials for the pro shop, course and restaurant, etc. Customer service is, by far, the most important area we need to focus on in golf in the City of Fort Collins. Great customer service is the reason we all go back to restaurants, stores, dealerships and, most assuredly, golf courses. I pride myself and my staff in creating relationships with all the golfers that come to the course. Whether it is fitting someone in on a busy day, offering a quick tip on the range, explaining the difference between the hundreds of different golf balls or just having a quick, personal conversation with a customer I strive to provide the best service possible to all customers. The little things are what count the most and we will provide all the little niceties that people enjoy and make them feel welcome. I will have three qualified Golf Professionals on staff to provide the best instruction possible. I and Matt Magley, my current assistant who is in the PGA Program, will be available full time for professional instruction year round. The third Golf Professional will be Kathy Knadler, formerly Kathy Hodge. Kathy is a Fort Collins native living in the Phoenix area that will serve as a Teaching Professional and run a great junior golf program and golf schools during the summer, with the goal of moving back to the area permanently to pursue a year round Teaching Academy at SouthRidge (please see attached). Kathy grew up at City Park Nine with many great junior golfers in the 80's and is a familiar name in Fort Collins golf. She will be the first female home grown golf professional in Fort Collins and will add instant credibility with a large growth area in golf, females. Her aim, as outlined in attachment, is to grow a strong junior program from the ground up with the hope of being at SouthRidge year round in the not too distant future and helping develop other golfer programs such as a teaching academy. How do you plan to finance your operation, both initially and through the year 2013, and how do you propose to increase revenue to the City? Financing the operation at SouthRidge will not be a problem. I have a current line of credit with Advantage Banks of $20,000. 1 also own homes in the Greeley area. I have assets in mutual funds, IRA's, life insurance stocks. I have accounts opened with most of the top manufacturers in the golf business so getting inventory will not be a problem at all as far as credit is concerned. The number one thing that I will do at SouthRidge to increase revenue to the City of Fort Collins is provide the best customer service possible to the people the play golf at SouthRidge. Great customer service will keep people coming back to SouthRidge, thereby increasing revenue to the City. Golf Professionals' jobs have changed dramatically in the past 10 years. Instead of being the "Face" of the club and being a great player and letting golfers come we are now in a much more competitive arena and struggling to get golfers to come. We have to get the golfer to come to us. I will actively recruit people to play at SouthRidge. A website at SouthRidge, like the one we developed at City Park, will recruit people to play golf at SouthRidge. I will seek out local business professionals to see if we can host a league or tournament for them. I will put together "Stay and Play" packages for out of town guests to stay in Fort Collins and play all three municipal courses in town. The packages would include golf, hotel, food, etc. and bring golfers to SouthRidge, Collindale and City Park Nine that would not normally play golf in Fort Collins. This would increase revenue in many ways to the City of Fort Collins, not just specifically through golf revenue. I will develop as many new leagues and recruit as many new tournaments as possible at SouthRidge to help increase play and, thereby, revenue to the City of Fort Collins. At City Park I did the following: established a Men's Association for the first time ever, complete with tournament schedule. I took over the Thursday Men's League and increased play and satisfaction immensely. I established a 2 man league that plays Tuesdays during the summer months. I also helped entice golfers to come play during down times in the summer, through the City, by offering a $10.green fee from noon to 2:00 during the week, a time that was literally a ghost town at City Park prior to the reduced rate. I understand that league play is nearly maxed out at SouthRidge, according to Dale Smigelsky. I will still attempt to institute a Couple's League, to play on afternoons on Saturday or Sunday and will also develop a Family League, to play on Sunday afternoons. I will also see if there is room for more players in leagues during the week during slower times. I am in a unique position among Fort Collins golf in that I grew up in Fort Collins, know all the people in Fort Collins, and yet have lived in Greeley for the past 15 years. I know everyone in Greeley golf as well and am able to recruit players actively throughout all of Northern Colorado, Fort Collins, Greeley, Windsor etc. based on not just being in one place. I have brought many golfers from outside of Fort Collins already to play golf in Fort Collins at City Park because my friends know where I am at and want to support me and the course I am at. This would not change if I were to be at SouthRidge. In fact the amount of golfers from outside Fort Collins who support me and the course I am at would increase based on the image of SouthRidge and the fact that it is 18 holes instead of 9 holes. With regard to course monitoring/marshaling and maintaining an acceptable pace of play, outline specifically what program you will implement? How much will you, as resident pro, be involved? First of all, the terms "ranger" and "marshal" will not be used anymore at SouthRidge. We will institute the term "player assistant" in place of the other outdated terms that often bring with them a negative connotation. We are in the customer service business so I will require that player assistants develop a rapport with each group on the course. Instead of saying "You are slow and need to speed up" player assistants will ask questions like "How is your round going?" or "Do you need anything, beverage cart, help with course knowledge, etc". In this way the ice is already broken for possible later discussion of slow play. The customer is now more at ease. If it is found that a group is slow on the course, instead of either leaving that group and coming back later or hounding that group, player assistants will stay with that group and help them to catch up. This would be done by helping them find golf balls, raking bunkers, helping with distances, etc. Each Player Assistant will be issued the day's play, according to their shift, prior to going out on the course and will receive new records periodically. This will help the player assistant recognize which groups are slow and give them numbers to back up why they are talking to a certain group about pace of play. Approximately every 15 minutes, when announcing who is next on the first tee, players will be reminded of pace of play issues. "Please remember that we would like you to play each of your 9 holes in 2 hours and 15 minutes or less. If you find that you are not waiting on the group in front of you but that groups behind you are waiting on you, please be courteous and allow faster groups to play through." A lot of times golfers are not aware enough of the people around them and it is our job to help normally thoughtful people remember that common courtesies are not forgotten once you set foot on the golf course. Also, SouthRidge is a golf course in which many golfers are seen riding. I will make sure pace of play placards are placed on every golf car for informational purposes for the golfer that is riding. It is important that Golf Professionals help to spread the word on fast play and how to make sure that golfers are quick players and not a burden to the rest of the play. The little things often add up to huge time savings on the golf course. Every instruction program or golf lesson taught at SouthRidge will include instruction on pace of play issues and how to recognize and resolve them. Things such as where to place your bag or park the golf car, golf etiquette, thinking about your shot as you are moving to it and not when you actually get there and just helping golfers be aware on the course are some of the things that will be taught to students during golf instruction. I will be immensely involved with developing a pace of play policy specific to SouthRidge and in implementing that policy. My philosophy is customer service is number one so anything I can do to encourage* golfers to enjoy themselves, while being aware of the surrounding golfers, is going to bring SouthRidge to mind the next time that person thinks about playing a round of golf. I or my assistant will be on the course periodically throughout the day to make sure that golfer's needs are being met and that our Player Assistants are performing acceptably. I will also make sure to keep abreast of new, interesting ideas about pace of play issues and ways to help speed up a round of golf and keep players happy. What special, new, and/or unique proposals, ideas, and financial arrangements do you have to offer SouthRidge or the City of Fort Collins? I will give the City of Fort Collins the next $10,000 over $85,000 in revenue from the driving range. Anything over $95,0001 will split 50/50 with the City of Fort Collins. In 2007 this would have resulted in an extra $7000 plus of City revenue. I will give to the City of Fort Collins $1.50 per tournament round played at SouthRidge. Depending -on the number of tournament rounds obviously, this could result in nearly $4500 extra per year in City revenue. I will make in kind payments back to the City of Fort Collins of $500 per month for a total of $6000 per year payable in quarterly installments of $1500. This would be an extra $1000 in City revenue compared to the current contract. Increased savings to the City of Fort Collins will be in the form of a reduced service fee, based on 2008 contract numbers with Dale Smigelsky. I will start the service fee payments at $60,000 in 2009 with 4% increases per year for the first 5 years of the contract. This would save the City approximately $15,000 in 2009 service payments. Also, I will give 2% of the annual service fee to the maintenance crew to use for uniforms, etc. This would be $1200 in the first year. It will take at least 2 months for a new professional to be hired at City Park Nine, assuming I am hired as the professional at SouthRidge. I would continue to run City Park Nine after taking on SouthRidge as my new position. I will do this for one half of the current service fee at City Park for the months of January and February. This will save the City of Fort Collins about $2350 per month for those two months. After February I would continue if needed but would need the entire service fee for staffing of City Park Nine. If I am chosen as the next Golf Professional at SouthRidge the City of Fort Collins would then be able to put out an RFP for City Park Nine. This means that the City would possibly be able to save money on the next contract vendor or receive money back from that vendor. This could mean new revenue/savings at City Park Nine. All told, based on the driving range doing $95,000 and 3000 tournament rounds in 2009, the City of Fort Collins would increase revenue/expenditure savings by nearly $31,500 in the first year of the contract. At a minimum this number would be approximately $19000. Another savings of approximately $4700, along with the negotiation of a new contract vendor at City Park Nine, could be seen if the above scenario is played out with my hiring at SouthRidge and completing my stay at City Park Nine until such time as a new professional is hired and able to take over.
