The KWHAL77MUSdisplay shows the power quadrant indicators, disk position indicator,
nominal service voltage, and kWh digits. It is normal for either power quadrant indicator 1 or 4
to flash during meter operation. The flashing power quadrant indicator is determined by load
current power factor. Unity power factor is exactly between the quadrant 1 and quadrant 4
indicator.
11.1.2. Switches
There are three switches on the ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL T/MUS(Figure' 34); one for
Demand Reset, one for scrolling the display, and one for Test Mode. To operate a switch, the

Altimus from Landis 6r Gyr is the industry's first solid
it electricity meter. On the surface, it is a
ece modular unit designed for more
Utility operation, less maintenance, easier
allation, superior accuracy, and safer
serviceability. Beneath its basic exterior,
Altimus utilizes integrated electronic
components to provide more than
kWh -only functionality The
mechanics of this unique design
and the advantages offered make
up the many specifications for per-
formance that define the Altimus
meter family from Landis & Gyr.

The Utility Control Module is the "intelligence unit"
of Altimus and contains all computational devices,
displays, and communication options specific to a utility
company's information gathering and reporting needs.
By utilizing sophisticated microprocessors and other
advanced electronics, this module provides energy mea-
suring functionality never before offered in a residential
metering product. In addition, the Utility Control Module
can be easily upgraded as installation requirements
change and technology advances in the future.

information is retained
indefinitely in the event of
any power failure.
The Electronic Digital Display is designed to be readable
from over 12 jeet away and features many configurations,
an enunciator that flashes at the rate of the Kt of the
meter, and indications for energy direction and tampering.
The readout is easier for customers to read, and should
therefore result in fewer inquiries regarding billing errors.

and cannot be recalibrated
except at the factory.
The Fixed Energy Terminal, the base unit of
Altimus, interfaces between the meter mounting
device and the interchangeable Utility Control
Module. The Fixed Energy Terminal automatically
aligns with the unit, can service all single-phase
applications, provides consistent calibration, and
is designed to maintain accuracy by withstanding
adverse operating variations. The low component
count and careful material selection, combined
with state-of-the-art design techniques, result in
a long-lived metering product.
The elements of Altimus offer exceptional performance
advantages for utility companies to generate a cost-
effective return on their investment.
The solid state design of Altimus offers superb accuracy
far superior than electromechanical or electromechanical
hybrid meters.
Surge arrestors are designed to prevent damage and
withstand surges up to IOKV.
The reliability of Altimus is ensured by a Fixed Ent
Terminal unit life expectancy of 30 years and a Uti
Control Module unit built with state-of-the-art
components and processes.
Altimus is stress -resistant to the installation
process or the interface between the meter and
the socket.
With a low starting watts and meter burden,
the Altimus meter saves you money by
measuring energy which was previously lost.
Altimus is FCC -compliant for computing devices a;
related to electronic meters.
Because Altimus is microprocessor based with an
microprocessor, meter flexibility is increased and allows
for new technology implementation.

2. The ALT/MUSMeter Family
Note: At the time of this publication, the ADVANCED FUNCTION ALT/MUS input/output
relay, RS-232, RS-485, and modem boards were not yet available. Please contact Siemens
Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc., for the latest information regarding the availability of
these communication options.
i The ALT/MUSprovides more than just reliability and accurate billing data. The AL77MUSis
designed to be a building block for a complete metering system. Each ALT/MUShas built in
# compatibility for a variety of communication boards including an internal phone modem, an RS-
232 board, an RS-485 board, or an input/output relay board. Any of these can be factory
# installed or conveniently added to the meter in the field. All active energy ADVANCED
FUNCTIONAL T/MUSmeters can be upgraded to reactive energy meters using software
upgrade kits. No additional circuitry is needed to upgrade these meters. Combining the
* ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL T/MUSwith the DG1150 Data Analysis software package yields a
complete system for real-time voltage, current, and load data monitoring; user defined event
alerts; graphical load analysis capability; and vector diagrams.
2.1. Register Types
# As shown in Table 1 and Figures 4 and 5, the ALT/MUSis available with several register types,
# ANCEDFUNCTIONALT/MUSfeatures the AXand RXregister
providing the right functionality for any metering application. The KWHALT/MUSfeatures the
AL register type. The ADV
types and includes ServiceScan automatic service recognition and GyrBox installation
diagnostics and monitoring.
i
Table 1-ALT/MUSRegister Types
# AL Register, "" The KWHALT/MUSfeatures the AL register. It is a kilowatt -
" hour -only meter designed to replace electromechanical meters
x' for energy -only billing applications. The KWHALT/MUSis
e programmed at the factory for proper displays. It requires no
t W; programming and provides the accuracy and flexibility of solid
state technology.
AX Feyist r The ADVANCEDFUNCT/ONALT/MUSis a combination
" demand and time -of -use active energy meter featuring the AX
register. When programmed for demand, the meter requires no
battery. By re -programming and adding a battery, it becomes a
' full -function time -of -use meter with a supercapacitor to extend
w battery life. The AXALT/MUSregister can be upgraded to a
reactive energy RXregister using a software upgrade kit.

The ADVANCED FUNCTION Al. T/MUSalso features the RX
register for full -function active and reactive energy demand -only
or demand and time -of -use metering. Available metrics include
kW/kWh, kVAR/kVARh, and kVA/kVAh as well as power factor.
The RXregister supports both rms and time -delay measurement
techniques allowing the user to choose the most appropriate
method.

3. Upgradability and the ServiceSafe Interface
The ALT/MUSfamily of products has been designed for field service and field upgradability.
Once an ALT/MUSmeter is in service, the ServiceSafeTm interface allows safe removal of an
Electronics Module without the need to remove the Base Module from the meter socket.
Once disconnected from the Base Module, an Electronics Module can be modified and
reinstalled or it can be replaced with an Electronics Module featuring a different level of
functionality.
a
3.1. Removal of the Electronics Module from the Base Module
To remove the Electronics Module from the Base Module, the plastic rivets (Figure 6, shown
in white for clarity) that fasten the Electronics Module to the Base Module must be removed.
4
A
4
Rivet
Rivet
Figure 6 - ALT/MUSCover Rivets
The ALT/MUSmeter must be held securely during the rivet removal process. Because the
ALT/MUSmeter is designed to be modified in service, the meter should be securely installed
in a mounting device during rivet removal. Alternately, the meter can be stabilized by holding it
along the edge of a table top with the right side of the baseplate cover flat against the table top
during right rivet removal or with the left side of the baseplate cover flat against the table top
during left rivet removal.
To remove the Electronics module from the Base Module, any meter seals must first be
removed.
The ALT/MUScan be sealed with either T-seals or rivet caps. T-seals should be removed.
Rivet caps should be carefully punctured through the top and extracted from rivet channels.
Do not reuse seals.
Force the rivet center post through the rivet using either a hammer and 3/32" punch (Figures
7 and 8) or Siemens rivet removal tool, part number 70019-1 (Figures 9 and 10). Discard the
used rivets.
