The Coloradoan
Seven golf professionals,
including two from Fort
Collins, have applied to be-
come the next head pro at
City Park Nine Golf Course.
A five -person committee
is scheduled to interview
the finalists Feb. 15. Jim
O'Neill, the city's director
of purchasing and risk man-
agement who heads the
committee, said Tuesday
that he expects three pros
to be named finalists and go
through the interview
process.
"We'll try to get them
narrowed down by Friday,"
O'Neill said. "We'd like to
get down to three, but it de-
pends on the point break If
it's not a clear break, then
we'll interview more."
The candidates are Dan
Bruntz, a former South -
Ridge GC assistant pro and
current concessionaire
there; Jim Dargis, head pro
14, Recreation
at Cattail Creek GC in
Loveland; Greg Dillon,
head pro at Shadow Hills
GC in Canon City; Harold
Garrison, a former City
Park Nine assistant and for-
mer head pro at Mountain
Vista Greens GC; Mike
Goff, a teaching pro at Mar-
iana Butte GC in Loveland;
Bob Haney Jr. from Suisun
City, Calif.; and John Nor -

man Miles, director of op-
erations at Quail Run and
VanBerg Park golf courses
in Columbus, Neb.
Each applicant submit-
ted a bid for the job prior to
the Feb. 2 deadline. Each
search committee member
will use a point evaluation
system for grading each
proposal.
"I think we have a good
group of (applicants),"
O'Neill said.
Others on the search
committee are Jerry P.
Brown, the city's manager
of golf; golf advisory board
members Frank Blanco and
Bill Rutledge; and a fifth
person from a Front Range
city whom O'Neill would
not identify. This is the first
time that a non -Fort Collins
resident has been on the
committee.
The successful candidate
also will be responsible for
concessions at City Park
Nine, the city's oldest
course and one in opera-
tion since the 1940s. Last
year, there were 44,130
rounds played, the fourth -
highest total on record.
The golf pro chosen will
replace Dale Smigelsky,
City Park Nine's pro during
1997-2000. Smigelsky took
over Jan. 1 as SouthRidge
GC's head pro, although he
continues to oversee the
City Park Nine operation
until the new pro takes
over.

`City Park Nine narrows pro field
By SEAN DUFF
The Coloradoan
If all goes well, City Park
Nine Golf Course will have
a new head professional by
the end of the week.
Dan Bruntz, Harold Gar-
rison and Mike Goff were
the three of seven appli-
cants asked to interview for
the position with a five -per-
son search committee.
They will interview for 45
minutes to an hour apiece
Thursday afternoon.
"Subject to checking ref-
erences, we should know
something Friday morn-
ing," said Jim O'Neill, the
city's director of purchas-
ing and risk management
and head of the search
committee.
Bruntz has been through
the interview process be-
fore. The former
SouthRidge GC assistant
pro was a finalist for the
head pro's job there in De-
cember. That job went to
Dale Smigelsky, creating
the opening at City Park
Nine.
Garrison is a former
CPN assistant and former
head pro at Mountain Vista
Greens GC. Goff, a teaching
pro at Mariana Butte GC in
Loveland, also applied for
the SouthRidge job but did
not interview for it.
Jim Dargis, head pro at
Cattail Creek GC in Love-
land; Greg Dillon, head pro
at Shadow Hills GC in
Canon City; Bob Haney Jr.
of Suisun City, Calif.; and
John Norman Miles, direc-
tor of golf at at Quail Run
and VanBerg Park golf
courses in Columbus, Neb.,
were the other applicants.
The five -person search
committee used a point
system to evaluate the ap-
plicants. O'Neill said there
was a clear break between
the finalists and the other
applicants.
"The consensus of the
committee was that (the fi-
nalists) all had pretty
strong proposals and pretty
strong backgrounds,"
O'Neill said.
The professional chosen
also will be responsible for
concessions at City Park
Nine, which has been in op-
eration since the 1940s.
There were 44,130 rounds
played there in 2000, the
fourth -highest total on
record.
The new pro will get a
one-year contract that is re-
newable annually for four
years.

City taking applications
for City Park Mine pro
By SEAN DUFF
The Coloradoan Recreation
The city has begun its
search for a new head pro-
fessional at City Park Nine
Golf Course, and qualified
pros have until 2 p.m. Feb. 2
to apply.
Interviews of finalists ten-
tatively have been set for
Feb.15. The city hopes to an-
nounce the winning candi-
date shortly after that date.
The successful candidate
also will be responsible for
concessions at City Park
Nine, which was built in the
1940s and became a munici-
pal course in 1970. An aver-
age of 44,300 nine- or 18-hole
rounds was played in each of
the past two years.
Dale Smigelsky, City Park
Nine's head pro since 1997,
left Jan. 1 to become head
pro at SouthRidge Golf
Course.
"We mailed packages to
everyone we had interest
from in the last (opening at
SouthRidge)," Jim O'Neill,
the city's director of purchas-
ing and risk management,
said Tuesday. "We had four
people at a prebid meeting
Monday, and we mailed
packets to 57 people."
O'Neill heads the five -per-
son search committee, which
will select the new pro. Also
on the committee are Jerry P.
Brown, the city's golf manag-
er, and Bill Rutledge and
Frank Blanco, representing
the city's golf advisory board.
O'Neill would not identify
the fifth committee member,
saying only he or she was
"from one of the Front Range
communities that deals with
god„
This is the first time that a
non -Fort Collins resident has
been included on the com-
mittee.
"We're just trying to make
sure we're giving everyone a
fair shake," O'Neill said.
"We're trying to dispel the
perception that anyone has
the job locked up, which they
haven't in the past."
The two previous City
Park Nine pros have taken
other jobs at city courses.
Smigelsky went to
SouthRidge, and Jim Greer,
City Park Nine's head pro
from 1978-96, has been
Collindale's head pro since
1997.
