RE Proposal NO 667
The Family Center is a north Fort Collins based resource center that provides services,
assistance and information to families who desire to improve the health and quality of their
lives We are a large collaboration of Fort Collins agencies and organizations drawing
together in support of the family unit It is our intention to support a family's journey
toward independence while honoring the differences that make each family unique We
give parents the confidence and skills needed to support the positive development of their
children and this in turn develops strong neighborhoods The City of Fort Collins also
supports farrulies by providing activities for farnilies with children during their fourth of
July celebration Utilizing our knowledge of children and our community support base, the
Family Center would like to sponsor, coordinate and manage the chtldren's events for the
1998 Fourth of July Celebration at City Park
The Family Center has hosted many community based events and works well with diverse
aspects of the community, creating a common vision and synergy We involve our center
with events that support families having fun together and we see coordinating this event
as an opportunity to lend our expertise to the city and become associated with a positive
family function

HISTORY and MISSION. "Mtsuon " The Family Center is a north Fort Collins based
center that provides services assistance and information to families who desire to improve
the health and quality of their lives
The Family Center concept emerged from a large coalition of community members called
Fort Collins for Families (spun off of Challenge Fort Collins) concerned about maintaining
or enhancing the quality of life for children and families The group identified a need for
neighborhood based centers that individuals and families could access for education,
information and a place to belong The group with the help of Junior League and the
Community Foundation wrote a grant requesting funds from the Governors Office to
create a center in Fort Collins As of 1998, we are one of 21 Family Centers initiated by
Governor Romer through The Family Center Initiative of 1991
The Fort Collins Fammly Center opened it's doors on July 8, 1995, after a 9 month
community planning and assessment phase During this time we engaged neighborhood
and community people to develop the vision and assess the family & neighborhood needs
We asked families to identify what is working well in their neighborhoods and what is not
easy for them and why We learned a great deal about true "Access" and continue to be a
neighborhood driven and community focused organization We focus our energy and
resources on family activities, events and services that assist in creating a brighter future
for all families living in our great city
We have found, that one of the Family Center gifts is in the area of collaboratively
planning, organizing and implementing Community based events To make it simple, we
throw a good party when it supports families With this awareness, the Family Center
governing board has decided to look at event based family activities as a means of
developing community awareness and fiscal support for the center We believe the Family
Center Vision/Mission and the City of Fort Collins intent for the " Children's Activities"
are closely aligned and our participation will add a grass roots flavor to the newly forming
stew to be presented on the fourth of July We make good team players and bring a large
coalition of neighborhood and community supporters that make committed workers when
presented with a task

Activities offered each year at the fourth of July celebration Many famihes with cluldren
attend the days events and it is important that the city of Fort Collins create a positive and
safe environment for the young ones and their parents We propose that the Family
Center, and community supporters will create a child friendly theme with games and
activities intended to entertain children, engage imaginations and promote positive
parent/child interaction The Family Center will take responsibility for,
• Collaboratively developing the plan
• Setting up the days events and soliciting community participation
• Developing fun and safe activities for children Toddler age - school age and their
families
• Soliciting the Corporate Underwriting of the children's events
• Purchasing materials needed and setting up booths on July 4th
• Coordinating & management of activities and people on July 4th
• Work in partnership with the city and other entities involved in celebration
• Representing the city of fort Collins and the Family Center in a positive light
Some Ideas we have are:
( Similar to the Kids Korner )
A self contained area with activities for parents with young children
- This area will have a place for parents with infants/toddlers to sit or to access
water & shade
- Booths and age appropriate activities for preschoolers
- Pay to enter the area and not for each booth
Other Ideas:
Geared to cross a greater age range
• Nuts for Nature
• Artist Alley
• A large Motor area
• Parent/child incentives
We would sell tickets to all activities in one area and all activities will be accessed in this
way
Questions?
Can we have limited food in this area geared to the children?
Can we have a porta potty near the children's area'
When do you decide?
