chemical control is seldom necessary. When chemical
controls are used they are applied according to labeled
directions in an environmentally sensitive manner by State
of Colorado Certified Pesticide Applicator members of the
golf course staff. The golf course is posted with chemical
information prior to any pesticide application.
WINTER MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
Snow is removed from the clubhouse sidewalks and the
parking lot by the maintenance staff. Some snow is removed
from the golf course also. There are several greens which
have trees that shade them preventing normal snow melt
causing excessive ice build-up and later suffocation of
the turf under the ice. These greens have snow removed
immediately following a storm. The other greens and
fairway areas do not have snow removed. Leaving snow on
the turf protects from desiccation and damage due to
severe cold weather. It is best under normal conditions to
allow snow to remain on the turfgrass.
Play .is not allowed at C.P.N. when there is frost on
the turfgrass. Frost damage is real and can be severe. The
damage occurs when golfers or golf carts travel across
frozen turfgrass regardless of the season or the stage of
dormancy of the plant. Intercellular ice crystals are
crushed, rupturing the plant cells which causes visual
plant damage or death. Frost damage is unsightly and can
reduce the quality of the playing surface.
Cross country skiing is discouraged at C.P.N. Damage
can result from ski poles tearing the turf or ski tracks
compacting to ice. Snowmobiles are totally prohibited from
the course and violators will be prosecuted.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Superintendent - The Golf Course Superintendent at
C.P.N. is responsible for all course maintenance
operations. These operations include hiring of all
maintenance personnel, budgeting, equipment needs, capital
improvement projects, course set-up, mowing, chemical
applications, irrigation, tree & shrub care and equipment
& facilities up keep.
