As an artist, the opportunity to collaborate with a design team has always stimulated new directions, new connections, and new expression. Working with architects, engineers, and community members leads to design solutions not of an existing imagination but of a newly created one. The results must not only work well but also inspire. Public art advocates the significance of art to the quality of life. Great neighborhoods generate a distinctive culture. This project can be a physical demonstration of that. The visual and written arts are an intriguing amalgam: their connection grows as the role and scope of libraries expand. I have explored this cross fertilization before with library projects for the State of Washington, the City of Aurora, and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Strong artwork for the S. E. Branch should welcome people of all ages to the realm of knowledge, inspiration, and delight. BARBARA BAER IMAGE LIST S.E. Branch Library Project Fort Collins, CO Air Play acrylic IVx24'x17' $30,000. 2000 Suspended in an entry atrium, the multipart sculpture presents a colorful flowing stream and sandblasted images of mountains. The work was designed for waiting medical patients and incorporates a mobile element that turns gently on ambient air currents. 2 Rio Vista acrylic and steel 10' x 16' x 16' $18,000. 2004 Cutout silhouettes on curving steel depict the many activities centered around this planned community. A water motif is borrowed from the town's site along the Sacramento River. 3 Sky Song acrylic 13' x 22' x 16' $21,000. 1998 The artwork is suspended in an employee commons area, overlooking the wooded corporate campus of BellSouth. Images of a stream, fallen leaves, and a bird in flight curve across the surface. 4 Light on Water acrylic and aluminum IVx5'x6' $17,500. 2004 Bolted to adjacent walls, the work rises through an opening between floors. The design is intended to bring relief to an emotionally difficult setting, the Boulder Justice Center. The curling forms hang from other portions of the artwork, combining features of a wallpiece and a mobile. 6 Sky Ribbon aluminum and acrylic 21'x11'x8' $40,000. 2002 Commissioned for the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, the metal form turns on a cable anchored to the second floor ceiling of the main library. The sculpture passes through a 12" wide opening in the skylight between the upper floor and the rotunda below. Translucent acrylic panels with etched imagery frame the second floor view. 7 Priairie (detail) acrylic and glass 48" x 144" x 3" $15,000. 2005 The layered walipiece honors donors to St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS, and celebrates specific images from the surrounding community. 8 Crescent City acrylic 44" x 63" x 7" $11,000. 2001 This work hangs in a conference room for a New York client. The painted shapes floating across the walipiece were inspired by a decorative wood bracket salvaged from a "shotgun" house in New Orleans. I have worked with artist/sculptor Barbara Baer on three major projects for SAS Institute, Inc. in Cary, NC. All three projects were for site -specific works and called for different artistic solutions. The first, was "Light Flow", in 1996, that was designed for a skylight in a cafe area. The second was named "Geometric Flow" in 1998, and the third, "Calder at Bilbao", in 2000. The first incorporated sheer nylon veils of material with metal forms. The second two were for atrium walls measuring 23' in height. Both involved the use of metal forms against flat walls. In each case,[s. Baer completed a meticulous design and brainstormed with us on any changes or alterations we requested. Each time she displaced a very professional and cooperative attitude. after the design phase of each project, we went to the commission agreement to ensure that the pieces would be fabricated according to the agreed upon design and would be completed by the date needed. All encounters with GIs. Baer have been very positive. Not only is she innovative, talented, and efficient, but her design models gave us a crystal clear idea of her intent. She completed three large- scale works of art for us in a timely, professional manner. I highly recommend her for anv artistic installations. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen. 0 1 was delighted tc hear that Barbara Baer is applying for a p ablic sculpture colrgrnission for the newS-c. Branch Library SEUM Over the more than t`ifteen years of our association, Barbara has mastered several commissions varying in scope, medium, OF OUTDOOR size and site parameters for the Museum of Outdoor Arts (NJOA )• Barbara's sensitivity, technical ability and use of materials are • , progressive and have exceeded beyond expectation. Her two most recent installations at MOA, "Bagatelle" and "Visible Archetypes," are excellent examples of her versatility. "Bagatelle" was recently installed in front of the Englewood Civic Center. Barbara incorporated mesh fabric and painted steel in cutout multi -dimensional Figures inspired by the to plan at Versailles. As part of a four -woman indoor show, Barbara's interpretation of "Visible Archetypes" included a plexi labyrinth suspended to project a floor patter, along with a multi-eo[ored cellophane design of the Golden Rectangle on a monumental picture window. The refracted colors on the floor and walls had much the same effect as a stained glass window. All of Barbara's commissions were on time and well administers, all criteria in compliance and within budget. She is a professional with the inventive process required M respond to any site architecturally and with the highest quality of skill [n my q - t,,r>r ivnt_e, Rarh::ri.
