How to Open a Coconut Opening a coconut can either be fast and easy or it can be slow and frustrating. It all depends on the tools and experience you have. The two main ways the "pros" do it is either with a machete -type knife or with a metal stake. THE WRONG WAY ! Swiss Army Knife saw blade THE RIGHT WAY Paying someone to do it. I am acquiring practice opening coconuts with a sharp metal stake --wooden sticks break and splinter. I have tried opening coconuts with a machete, but fears of forever being called "Lefty" have made me afraid of doing this too often. Estimate where the inner shell is, and avoid stabbing that area. Select a corner to stab, drive stake through husk, keeping fingers away! tear away coconut husk. Repeat this process until a good amount of inner shell is showing. Then, smash or stab open the inner shell and enjoy! Reprinted with permission from NICE PLACES TO LIVE!, ©1995 Tom Wayman
