It all depends on the tools and experience you have. The two main ways the "pros" do it is either with a machete -type knife or with a metal stake. THE WRONG WAY ! Swiss Army Knife saw blade THE RIGHT WAY Paying someone to do it. I am acquiring practice opening coconuts with a sharp metal stake --wooden sticks break and splinter. I have tried opening coconuts with a machete, but fears of forever being called "Lefty" have made me afraid of doing this too often. Estimate where the inner shell is, and avoid stabbing that area. Select a corner to stab, drive stake through husk, keeping fingers away! tear away coconut husk. Repeat this process until a good amount of inner shell is showing.
