The client and our landscape architect (Susan Saarinen) completed an inventory of the existing trees on the property, and it is evident that several trees must be removed in order to develop the property in the manner desired. This letter is to provide the justification for removing these trees. Only trees that are directly impacted by the construction of the new addition to the church or other areas of the site being improved due to City requirements will be removed. In addition, all new trees planted as mitigation for trees being removed will be planted in areas that will not be in the way of future construction based on the current master plan. · Tree #3 (18” Blue Spruce in fair condition) will be removed because it is with in the footprint of the new construction · Tree #4 (19.5” Blue Spruce in fair condition) will be removed because it is within the footprint of the new construction · Tree #5 (12.5” Box Elder in fair condition) will be removed because it is adjacent to the new construction · Tree #6 (38” Cottonwood in poor condition) will be removed because it is within the footprint of the new construction · Tree #8 (14” Austrian Pine in fair condition) will be removed because it is within the footprint of the new construction · Tree #9 (8” Pinyon Pine in good condition) will be removed because it is within the footprint of the new construction · Tree #10 (5”+8” Pinyon Pine in fair condition) will be removed because it is adjacent to the new construction, this tree is not a candidate for transplanting · Tree #11 (18.5” Austrian Pine in Fair condition) will be removed because it is adjacent to the new construction · Tree #12 (17” Austrian Pine in fair condition) will be removed because it is adjacent to the new construction · Tree #13 (10” Box Elder in fair condition) will be removed due to grade changes at tree location for drainage · Tree #14 (10” Box Elder in fair condition) will be removed due to grade changes at tree location for drainage · Tree #16 (17” Austrian Pine if Fair condition) will be removed due to grade changes at tree location for detention pond · Tree #26 (12” Green Ash in Fair condition) will be removed due to the changes to the parking island location and shape to comply with fire truck turning radii · Tree #52 (5” Ash dead/dying) will be removed due to the poor condition of the tree and to allow a new tree to be planted in this location · Tree #63 (14” Spruce in Fair condition) will be removed due to grade changes at tree location for detention pond · Tree #70 (2 dead/dying Honey Locusts) will be removed due to the poor condition of the tree and to allow a new tree to be planted in this location The Foothills Unitarian congregation is very environmentally sensitive, and it is not without grave consideration that we consider removing these trees, but the congregation also needs this additional space, so there is no choice but to remove these trees. Let me know if you have any questions about this. Sincerely, Peter J. Ewers, AIA, LEED AP
