This letter is in response to those two questions. The first question was whether or not the holes that were drilled into the new beam are ok (see picture below). The three holes in the middle of the beam fall within the middle third of the beam and are smaller than the max hole size, 7.9" diameter, allowed by the manufacturer in an 11 7/8" deep LVL. Per the manufacturer these holes should be spaced 18 inches apart, at a minimum. However, in this case, the spacing of approximately 8" is ok due to the size of the two smaller holes and the fact that the beam is slightly oversized. The hole that was drilled on the right side of the beam is outside of the middle third by approximately 4-5 inches. The manufacturer does allow for a hole to be placed in the end third of a beam as long as it is a minimum of 1.5 times the depth of the beam away from the support. In this case that minimum distance is approximately 18 inches and the hole is approximately 36 inches away from the support. Therefore, all four drilled holes are acceptable. 400 North Link Lane I Fort Collins, Colorado 80524 Telephone:970-206-9455 Fax:970-206-9441 Lis The second question is a clarification of the way the south column, of this new beam, was transferred to the existing beam and foundation element in the crawlspace. The original design called for a new foundation pad in the crawlspace. However, once the remodel began it was found that the column fell partially on the existing floor beam and right above a foundation support. In order to transfer the new load onto the existing beam (3) 2x8s were spanned from the exterior wall to the existing beam under the new column. This framing solution is sufficient for transferring the new column load into the foundation element below. Thank you for selecting CTLITHOMPSON for your engineering needs.
