Shear Engineering Corporation was contacted following a City of Fort Collins frame inspection
of the deck and pergola under construction at the above referenced site. It is our understanding
that several corrections are required based on the comment list provided by the City of Fort
Collins building inspector on August 26, 2019. We have been asked to review the comments to
determine what corrections are required, as well as provide follow-up observations of the
corrections. The following is a list of the comments and our responses.
Comment #1: Need double joists at center column.
Response: Due to the actual 14'-0" span of the pergola roof beam instead of 15'-0" as
shown on the plans, the center pergola post was eliminated. Since there is no
center pergola post bearing on the deck framing, the double deck joist
requirement on either side of the center deck post is eliminated. Shear
Engineering Corporation has approved the elimination of the center pergola
post and double deck joists at the center deck post.
Comment #2: Pergola posts not attached per plans.
Response: Shear Engineering Corporation visited the site on Wednesday, September 4,
2019 in order to document the provided pergola post attachments. Based on
our observations, it was determined that the pergola post attachments to the
deck joists / blocking below were acceptable, but the blocking attachment to
the deck joists requires modification. It was recommended to add two (2)
Simpson LS90 / L90 angles to attach the blocking beneath the pergola posts to
the outer double deck joists.
Shear Engineering Corporation observed the recommended installation of the
Simpson LS90 / L90 angles as described above and has approved the pergola
post attachments.
Comment #3: Install tension ties.
Response: Shear Engineering Corporation observed the installation of the three (3)
Simpson DTT1Z deck tension ties. It is our opinion that the provided deck
tension ties satisfy the building code requirement for lateral load connections.

Comment #4: 1" riser from concrete over 8".
Response: This correction to be verified by the City of Fort Collins during the follow-up
frame inspection.
Comment #5: Install LS90's per engineer (at stair stringer to landing).
Response: Shear Engineering Corporation observed the installation of the Simpson LS90
angles at the stair stringer to concrete landing attachments and has approved
their installation.
Comment #6: Shade slats too close together.
Response: This correction to be verified by the City of Fort Collins during the follow-up
frame inspection.
