The tree we reviewed is a White Spruce in the front yard very close to the house. The tree is in the planting bed toward the east end of the front of the house. She showed us where excavation would need to occur close to the tree to enlarge the widow well. This excavation is quite close to the tree and would impact the root system. The tree is also very to close to the house for a tree of this type that can reach over 40 feet tall. It's located only a few feet from the foundation. Forestry staff agreed that removing the tree due to the construction impact and how close it is to the house, was appropriate. Since the tree is relatively small no mitigation was required. The land use code does not require mitigation on small trees that are under 6 inch diameter measured at 4.5 feet above the ground. The White Spruce has two stems at this height, both about 2 inches in diameter. The significant tree in the front yard you ask about is a Norway maple that is around 17 inches in diameter. There is a code requirement for tree branch height over public streets and sidewalks. This is 8 feet over sidewalks and 14 feet over the street. I am not aware of a tree branch height requirement over private parking spaces. Practically speaking there does need to be clearance for parked vehicles. The tree could be pruned to provide additional clearance over the location where the parking is proposed to be located. Please let me know if you have any additional Forestry Related questions.
