The A.J. SHIRK ROOFING COMPANY contract in #2 states "All work to be done in
accordance with local codes and manufacture's specifications.....".
These are some the areas where the roof fails to meet the manufactures specifications as set forth
in the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau - New Roof Construction Manual (herein referred to as
"the manual").
1. The shingles used, "FIVE X" (16"), should have a maximum weather exposure of 5 inches as
specified in the manual page 1, Table 2 - Shingle Exposure, and on back of the label on each
bundle of shingles.
2. The spacing between
shingles described on the
back of the label and in the
manual page 5, "Certi-label
Shingle Application" #3
`Spacing between adjacent
shingles (joints) should be a
minimum of 'Wand a
maximum of 3/8"'.
3. Fasteners should be 3d x 1 %* box nails, larger nails cause cracking of shingles.

4.The width as referred to in the manual page 5, "Certi-label Shingle Application" #6 - "Flat
grain shingles wider than 8" should be split in two before nailing. Knots and similar defects
should be treated as the edge of the shingle and the joint in the course above placed 1'/2" from the
edge of the defect." Our shingles are labeled 100% edge grain.
