RE: Basement Window Headers, Manvel House, 601 Endicott Street, Fort Collins, CO 80524.
I met with Steve Josephs of Craftsman Builders on site to evaluate the feasibility of widening several windows in
the basement of the home at 601 Endicott in February. Following that visit, I recommended that the windows
could be widened as discussed and suggested that the headers over the windows could be a single 2x8.
Since that time, Craftsmen Builders have widened the windows. During the construction process, a 2x8 was added
to the rim joist above the modified windows, effectively doubling the rim joist. In all cases, the joists were running
parallel to the window openings, thus the primary load supported by the headers was roof load and well within the
capacity of the doubled rim joists.
As a structural engineer, it is my opinion that the doubled rim joist headers over the widened windows are both
adequate and appropriate to support the site loads for this home.
