Beam Support in for Floor Joists ih Place of a Removed' Bearing Wall. S & A Project 0903-1 Dear Sirs: We have reviewed the problem created by the removal of the bearing wall supporting the main floor joists. We also note that the joists were not continuous over the wall but were spliced over the wall. You, may install an inverted steel ,"T" at the removed, wall location; spanning the approximate 8 ft., and bearing on the outside wall and the interior end wall. Double unequal, leg angles may also be used in this location as an alternate, to _ utilizing the inverted "T" section. The following steel sections (A-36.type) may be used: 1 A "T" section "ST x 12.7 (5" high with a 4-5/8 flange). 2. Double angles 4 x 3 Yz x'/4 (4" legs back to back). 3. Double angles 5 x 3 x'/4 (5" legs back to back).. Of course, heavier sections could be used but are not necessary. When using the double angles, stitch weld the angles together. Shore the floor on either side of the beam placement location so that when the joists are cut for the angle webs, the joists do not.split from the dead load above. Let me know if there are any questions on. the installation. .Yours truly, `... STD *: Steige and'Associates,,Ind. P . Walter E.
