Dear Mr. Bonnema,
ZZ,
SHEAR
ENGINEERING
CORPORATION
This building was damaged during the snowstorm that occurred Tuesday and Wednesday (March
18-19, 2003). The roof joist components and exterior walls were not damaged during this event.
However, the center support beam was severely deflected and did not return to its original shape.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
The building is a wood -frame structure with a center roof support beam. The beam currently
clear -spans the thirty-six foot (36') width of the building. There is some indication that the beam
was originally supported mid -span by a steel column that was supported by an interior footing.
At some unknown time, the post was removed.
CURRENT OBSERVED CONDITION
The current W8xl8 steel beam is clear -spanning thirty-six feet (36') and is in a deflected shape
approximately eight inches (8") below level, at the center point. The beam deflected during
excess long-term snow loading due to the storm and never returned to its original shape.
Permanent structural damage has occurred in the beam and it will require replacement.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Our analysis indicates that the existing W8xl8, clear -spanned thirty-six foot (36') steel beam,
was not adequate to support the roof loading. The beam has deflected and sustained permanent
damage and will require replacement.
Based on your request, Shear Engineering Corporation checked the beam size requirement for
the replacement beam with the center post reinstalled. Our analysis indicated that a W8x18 steel
beam would provide adequate support for the peak anticipated roof loading. A three and one-half
inch (3.5") diameter steel column (schedule 40) should be installed at the center beam bearing
location. This post shall rest on the existing foundation system.
