Dear Mr. Rutt,
Shear Engineering Corporation has been involved in certain requested design changes and has
conducted several framing observations throughout construction at the above referenced site.
Certain observations were made on Tuesday, September 19, 2002. These observations were
made primarily concerning the posting requirements for the second floor post near the stairs.
For reasons unknown to Shear Engineering Corporation, the main floor and second floor beams
did not line up. They are offset by approximately three (3) inches. Shear Engineering
Corporation analyzed the beam loading and the post bearing requirements. Our analysis
indicated that a three (3) inch notch could be cut into the 6x6 posts. This three (3) inch by six (6)
inch bearing seat will provide adequate support for the second floor beam and stacks on top of
the main floor beam. Shear Engineering Corporation recommends installing two (2) half -inch
diameter bolts through the remainder of the 6x6 post and the second floor microllam beam. See
the attached exhibit for details.
