Dear Bill:
This letter is to recap our discussions several days ago concerning subject
above and my problems in recertifying the floor system at the upper level or
second story for restaurant loading. It was the original contention of the
Building Inspection Department to require that the loading meet assembly areas
of a moveable seating type. This would require a live uniform load requirement
for 100 p.s.f.
We agreed that perhaps this kind of loading, although technically correct,
might be a bit stiff for the actual requirements for a sit-down restaurant area.
I indicated to you that on our preliminary calculations the worst condition for
the building showed it could support a live load of 80 to 85 + p.s.f. To achieve
100 p.s.f. loading we feel that with people standing back to back and shoulder
to shoulder, the average weight for them would have to be 150 pounds.
If a comfortable spacing of standing only type occupancy of say 7 s.f. per per-
son, the average weight per person would have to be 560 pounds to yield a p.s.f.
weight of 80 p.s.f.
Maximum span for the upper floor is 14'-2" including 3" for bearing and out -to -
out bearing. Floor joists are nominal 2 x 10's with 12 x 92" dimensions and
a consequent section modulus (s) of 22.56 in.3. Lumber is pine with an esti-
mated fiber bending stress (f ) equal to 1200 p.s.i. Spacing is 12" o.c.
Formulas and calculations use are as follows.
Section modulus; b2
of section s=6
2
moment; m-w8
Section required; S-f
b=base of section
h=height of section
w=weight per lineal foot
(=span in feet)
m=maximum moment
f=allowable fiber bending
