Fort Collins, Colorado 80521 Attn: Chuck and Cheryl Gower Re: Construction Observation and Material Testing Rams Crossing at Campus Remodel - Entryway Additions 914 West Lake Street Fort Collins, Colorado EEC Project No. 1114078 Mr. & Mrs. Gower: As requested by the general contractor, Brinkman Construction, during the period of October 3 through October 15, 2011, Earth Engineering Consultants, Inc. (EEC) personnel provided construction observation and testing services for the referenced project. Those services were provided on a part-time basis and included a foundation excavation observation for the east entryway improvements, reinforcement observations for the footings, stem wall, and pilasters in conjunction with the east entryway structure, and testing of cast -in -place concrete for the referenced project. The results of the observation completed by EEC personnel are included with this report. Foundation Excavation Observation — East Entryway On October 12, 2011, a representative from EEC visited the site to observe foundation bearing materials for the east entryway structure planned for construction at the referenced site. At the time of our site visit, the foundation excavation for the canopy structure footing pads and grade beam adjacent to the existing building, (please refer to the site diagram included herein for reference purposes), had been excavated to approximate foundation bearing elevations. The soil profile noted within the excavation generally consisted of sandy lean clay transitioning to clayey sand. A hand auger boring was completed within the foundation excavation by EEC personnel to a depth of approximately 3 feet below proposed foundation bearing level. Dynamic cone penetrometer testing indicated the cohesive to slightly cohesive subsoils were medium stiff in consistency. The soils observed within the excavations were generally consistent with the assumed "foundation bearing capacity" materials as noted on the approved structural drawings and are capable of supporting the 4396 GREENFIELD DRIVE WINDSOR, COLORADO 80550 (970) 545.3908 FAX (970) 663-0282 Earth Engineering Consultants, Inc. Rams Crossing at Campus Remodel November 2, 2011 Page 2 structure using a net allowable maximum bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. No groundwater was encountered within the base of the excavation. Care should be taken during construction to avoid disturbing the bearing materials. Materials that are loosened or disturbed by the construction activities or materials that become dry and desiccated or wet and softened should be removed and replaced prior to placement of foundation concrete. Foundation Reinforcement Observations and Cast -in -Place Concrete TestiM During the referenced period, EEC personnel conducted site visits on October 12, and 14, 2011, to perform visual observations of the reinforcing steel placed within the east entryway site improvements, (i.e., continuous spread footing alignments, column pad footings, stem walls, and pilasters), prior to placing foundation concrete as indicated herein. A summary of the observations is included with this report. Any discrepancies of reinforcement, if noted on the daily observation report were brought to the attention of the project's construction management consultant, Brinkman Construction, and the reinforcement subcontractor, Red Willow, during the initial site visits and corrections/modifications were addressed accordingly prior to placement of the foundation concrete. Clearances and lap lengths, where applicable, were checked and appeared to meet the minimum requirements. The reinforcement for the portions of the foundation system observed by EEC personnel on the date as noted herein, appeared to be in general accordance with the structural details as presented on project plans and supplemental ASI schematics provided to us by Brinkman Construction. During the referenced period, EEC personnel observed and tested Portland cement concrete delivered to the site for placement within the foundation elements as indicated on the daily reports. Field testing performed on the plastic concrete included slump, air content, and concrete temperature. The ambient air temperature at the time of placement was also recorded. Concrete test cylinders were cast from representative samples for laboratory curing and compressive strength testing. Results of the field and 7-day laboratory compressive strength test results performed during the referenced period are included herein, while the 28-day compressive strength results will be provided under separate cover when the results become available.
