HighCraft Builders 429 South Howes Street Fort Collins, Colorado 80521 Attn: Mr. Scott Fetters Re: Foundation Bearing Observation 3317 Moore Lane — Building Addition Fort Collins, Colorado EEC Project No. 08-01-016 Mr. Fetters: As requested, Earth Engineering Company, Inc. (EEC) personnel have completed an observation of the foundation bearing materials for footing foundations for the building addition to the single-family residence. The results of those observations are included with this report. On February 19, 2008, EEC personnel observed foundation bearing materials for the foundation footings for the referenced building addition to the residence located at the referenced address. The above -grade portions of the current residence had been demolished prior to our site visit; however, the foundation and floor slab remained in place. We understand the building addition will be a lightly loaded wood frame addition constructed on a garden level/walkout basement with an attached garage. At the time of our field observations, the building area had been excavated to approximate foundation - bearing elevation. The materials observed in the excavation area consisted predominantly of brown to dark brown sandy lean clay. Two small areas of light brown/olive highly weathered sandy claystone bedrock were also observed. Hand probe resistance tests indicated that the in -situ lean clay and highly weathered bedrock materials were stiff/moderately hard in consistency. Swell/consolidation tests were performed on representative samples of the foundation bearing materials in the basement and crawlspace foundation bearing levels to determine swell potential with variation in moisture content. The dark brown sandy clay soils showed low potential for swelling at present moisture and density conditions while the P.O'. Box; 271428 P.O. EEC Project No. 08-01-016 February 25, 2008 Page 2 light brown/olive highly weathered sandy claystone bedrock exhibited low to moderate potential for swelling at present moisture/density conditions. Based on the results of the outlined field testing and observation, it is our opinion the in - situ materials could be used for support of the footing foundations using a design maximum net allowable total load soil bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. It should be noted that the potential for differential movement between the addition and the existing residence should be addressed in the foundation design. While the site soils observed exhibited relatively low swell potential at current moisture/density conditions, some swelling was observed in the highly weathered bedrock materials. Slight movement of lightly loaded elements supported over the highly weathered bedrock could occur and should be expected. Moisture conditioning and reworking of the subgrade soils could be considered to reduce the potential for post -construction movement; however, that risk cannot be eliminated. The conclusions presented in this report are based on the limited observations completed as outlined above. A current and intrusive geotechnical subsurface exploration would be necessary to more thoroughly evaluate the subsurface soils. Evaluation of the materials beneath what was observable in the excavation is beyond the scope of this report. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. (EEC) personnel have completed the i construction observation services you requested for the referenced project. Those services included an observation of the foundation footing dimensions for the referenced address. Two site visits were required to complete the observations. The results of the site observations completed by EEC personnel are included with this report. On February 19 and 20, 2007, EEC personnel observed footing foundation widths for the foundation footings for the above referenced single-family residence. The garage footings were approximately 12 and 16 inches wide by 8 inches thick. The garden level basement footings were approximately 12, 16, 20 and 26 inches wide by 8 inches thick at various locations. At the time of our final site observations, it appeared that the foundation footing widths had been placed in general accordance with the construction plans prepared by Advanced Engineering, LLC (Project No. 1011-31-01B).
