Dear Mr. Dennison:
In response to your questions concerning the structural design of the
three buildings referenced above with regard to inspections, we note
the following)
1. WELDING:
Spooial moment —resisting steel frames were not need in
the design. Fillet welds to be made in the field during
construction were assigned to be stressed to 50% or lose of the
allowable stresses. Therefore, we believe inspection of such
welding, as well as the roof dock welding, can be done on a
periodic basis per code ■action 306(s)S.B.Exception 2.
2. HIGH —STRENGTH BOLTING: These buildings were designed for shear/
bearing —type connections with threads not excluded from Shear
planes. Therefore, we believe that initial inspection of the
bolts and final observation of the installation will comply with
code section 306(a)6. under the Exception.
3. STRUCTURAL MASONRY! Stresses used in the design of the StruO—
tural masonry for these buildings have been adjusted to permit
non —continuous inspection, that is they have been reduced by one
half per Section 2409.(0)1.
please call if you have questions concerning the above.
Very truly yours,
