A Division of The Terracon Companies, Inc. P.O. Box 503.301 No. Howes Fort Collins, Colorado 80522 (303)484-0359 Fax (303) 484-0454 Chester C. Smith, P.E. Larry G. O'Dell, P.E. Neil R. Sherrod, C.P.G. On January 10, 1995, an engineer from Empire Laboratories, Inc. visited the above -referenced site as requested. The purpose of this visit was to determine the feasibility of enlarging three existing basement windows to egress windows. It is our understanding that two windows on the south wall and possibly one window on the north wall near the northeast corner are to be enlarged to 4'x4' windows from present 32-inch wide by 22-inch tall windows. The existing foundation is cast -in -place concrete basement foundation. It is our understanding the windows are to be placed even with the edge of the existing windows and widened to one side. Based on our observations and site measurements, it is our opinion that it is feasible to put new 4'x4' windows in the above -referenced locations. It is recommended that 2-3 %2 "x3 %2 "x%" steel angles be placed over the top of the window openings. The angles can bear on the concrete each side of the window opening or on treated 2"x8" trimmers each side of the window opening. An option would be to place 2- 1 %"x7%4" LVLs over the top of the window or 4-2"x8"s. The wood headers should bear on a treated 2"x8" trimmer each side of the window opening.
