SHEAR
ENGINEERING
Shear Engineering Corporation was present during caisson drilling and concrete placement for
the above referenced site on Wednesday, December 22, .1999. The soils within the excavation
were noted at this time. The soils noted in the basement excavation consisted primarily of
weathered sandstone and claystone with gravel. The soils noted in the garage excavation
consisted primarily of silty clay. The soils are generally consistent with the soils noted by
Foundation and Soils Engineering, Inc. in their geotechnical investigation report for Lots 3 and
9, Huntington Hills Filing No. 5 titled, "Geotechnical Investigation for Lots 3 and 9, Huntington
Hills Fifth Filing, Fort Collins, Colorado"; prepared by Foundation and Soils Engineering, Inc.;
Commission No. 4393-03-01-01; report dated August 24, 1999.
Boring Logs TH-1 and TH-2 were provided for Lot 3. Boring Log TH-1 indicated fill material to
a depth of two feet (2') underlain by claystone for the remainder of the boring of twenty one feet
(2l'). Boring Log TH-2 indicated fill material to a depth of two feet (2') underlain by claystone
for the remainder of the boring of fifteen feet (15').
Due to the nature of the soils noted above, a drilled pier (caisson) foundation system was
recommended.
Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Tuesday, -January 4, 2000 for wall steel
placement observations. All observations were made to confirm that caisson construction and
wall steel placement was in compliance with the foundation plan. All caisson construction and
wall steel placement was completed in substantial compliance with the foundation plan, which
was prepared by Shear Engineering Corporation and dated December 1999.
Groundwater was not evident in the excavation. Waterproofing is ndt required. At a minimum,
all . foundation walls shall be dampproofed according to the requirements of 1991 UBC,
Appendix Chapter 29, Waterproofing and Dampproofing Foundations. A foundation drain .
system will be required. A sump pit to be located in the basement is recommended as a primary
drain outfall.
