Re: Supplemental Rain Garden Evaluation Report
The Music District Addition/Remodel – 633/639 South College Avenue
Fort Collins, Colorado
EEC Project No. 1154182
Mr. Phipps:
Earth Engineering Consultants, LLC (EEC) personnel have completed the limited field and
laboratory testing services of existing conditions within the recently completed “rain-garden”
situated off of the northeast corner of the renovated Music District building at the referenced site.
The supplemental field and laboratory exploration services were performed in general accordance
with the conversation/discussion EEC personnel had with Neenan Company personnel on May 26,
2016 regarding the construction of the rain-garden area. The limited exploration, in essence was
to verify current conditions, (i.e., thicknesses of the bio-retention sand media and the underlying
pea gravel zones), were in general accordance with the design details. A site diagram and our
results are included with this report.
OVERVIEW
For this limited rain garden evaluation assessment, a single hand driven slotted tube device was
advanced at a pre-determined/select location within the rain garden footprint as indicated on the
enclosed site diagram. The hand driven slotted tube device was extended to an approximate depth
of 2-feet below site grades to verify the presence and thickness of the bio-retention sand media
and underlying pea gravel materials. Samples of the extracted materials were then returned to our
laboratory for further evaluation. The results of the field and laboratory testing are presented with
this report.
FIELD EXPLORATION
As previously mentioned, EEC personnel conducted a limited field exploration consisting of
sampling the rain garden subsoils at a single pre-determined location to evaluate the bio-retention

sand media and underlying pea gravel thicknesses for compliance purposes. EEC personnel obtained
samples of the bio-retention sand media, pea gravel, and of the underlying native subsoils below the
rain garden for further laboratory testing purposes. The field exploration was conducted on May 27,
2016.
The thickness of the rain garden profile was completed by hand driving a slotted cylindrical soil
sampling sleeve, approximately 4-feet in length, and 2-1/2-inches diameter into the subsoils using a
“post-hole driving/hammer device”. A photograph of the soil sampling device along with the field
measured thicknesses of the bio-retention sand media and pea gravel, are presented on the enclosed
Rain Garden Site Diagram. The sampling device was extended into the underlying cohesive soils
below “in an effort” to capture the sand media and pea gravel materials within the slotted tube device.
The underlying subsoils were also evaluated as part of this study. All three (3) samples, (i.e., the
Bio retention sand media, pea gravel and the underlying clay subsoils) obtained in the field were
sealed and returned to the laboratory for further testing purposes.
As illustrated on the Rain Garden Site Diagram, the bio-retention sand media material measured at
least 12-inches in thickness and the underlying pea gravel layer was approximately 6 inches thick.
The underlying native subsoils below the rain garden profile in general consisted of a moist tan
cohesive material classified as lean clay with sand.
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory testing performed on each of the retrieved samples included an in-situ moisture
content, washed sieve analysis (ASTM C117 and C136), and for the underlying cohesive subsoils
an Atterberg limits (ASTM Specification D 4318) test was performed. A summary of the
laboratory test results for the samples tested and evaluated as part of this study are shown below
in Table I, and are also included on the attached summary sheets.

Note: The pea gravel layer was encountered below the 12-inch section of Bioretention sand media and was measured at a
thickness of at least 6 inches. The gradation results as presented herein may be slightly skewed due to possible infiltration
of the sand media from above and possibly influenced from the sandy lean clay / clayey sand native subsoils below.
