Dear Fort Collins City Council Members:
I am writing to voice my concern about planning process for the new High School.
I agree with Kate Caldwell, writing in the April 9, 1992 Triangle Review, that
there is a more substantive issue underlying the E-Mail affair. The city needs
to be significantly involved in the high school planning process because there
is an important city issue to be addressed; transportation.
It is important that we emphasize other transportation modes in order to shift
away from dependence on single occupant vehicles by students. The planning
process needs to incorporate the stated Fort Collins transportation plan. High
school students could be natural users of mass transit and bicycling facilities.
Their parents may welcome the opportunity to avoid the expense of another car and
loss of parental control involved in getting a car for their high school age
children.
I had assumed that these issues would be dealt with by the city agencies and the
council liaisons when `he right time came and that there would be public
involvment. School board meetings have not dealt with the larger off -site
issues. From Cal dwelI's column it looks like little will be done. I hope it'�is
not -too late to have vigorous city involvment in this process. We need to start
curbing our excessive dependence on single occupant vehicles. Poudre R-1 and the
city need to work closely on this one.
