Dear Stephen;
When your group considers legal non -conforming uses, other than
strictly a sign manufacturing business, it might help to set
forth the routine, day-to-day work that is done in any electrical
sign manufacturing company. It is a highly diversified, skilled
craft business.
1. Metal fabrication; metal cabinets and metal letters of many
shapes, styles and sizes, with internal structural framework.
This requires:
a. Metal shearing equipment
b. Metal brake equipment
c. Angle iron working equipment
d. Arc welding equipment
e. Soldering equipment
f. Spot welding equipment
2. Aluminum extrusion and aluminum sheet fabrication; extruded
aluminum sign frames are made from stock length extrusions, and
heavy gauge aluminum faces are cut, routed and assembled. Light
gauge aluminum letters are fabricated. This requires (in addition
to the basic metal working equipment listed above):
a. Large metal cutting radial arm, carbide blade saw
b. Heliarc, MIG and TIG welding equipment.
c. Cad/Cam routing equipment
d. Light duty Punch presses
e. Drill presses
3. Plastic fabrication; the making of acrylic and polycarbonate
sign faces, letters and other fabricated components requires:
a. Precision 10 foot panel saw
b. Vacuum forming equipment (Oven, vacuum tables, etc.)
c. Band saw
d. Cad/Cam and manual routing equipment
4. Paint and finish equipment. Many types of brushed, screened
and sprayed -on finishes are used in the sign business; this
requires:
a. Air compressors
b. Paint booth
c. Spray guns
d. Approved indoor
e. Outdoor storage
f. Screen printing
paint storage
of thinners and solvents
presses

5. Woodworking in many forms is done; letters, cabinets, framing,
ornamental, etc. This requires:
a. Table saws
b. Miter boxes
c. Gluing equipment
d. Sanders
6. Neon tube bending. Neon letters and borders are hand bent from
stock lengths of glass tubing in many sizes and colors. This
requires;
a. Special gas burning, air enhanced fires
b. High voltage bombarding equipment
c. Rare gas manifold with vacuum pumps
7. Electrical apparatus and wiring department. Many varieties of
electrical circuits are wired in-house. These include 120 volt,
240 volt primary wiring, high voltage neon transformer circuits,
solid state electronics for score -boards, computer -controlled
message centers, electronic time and temperature equipment,
flashing incandescent lamp circuits with solid state or electro-
mechanical switching devices
8. Pattern making; full scale patterns for many types of signs
must be made. This requires:
a. Overhead viewing blow-up equipment
b. Manual patten drawing space and tables
c. Pounce (perforating) machine.
9. Installation equipment, consists of:
a. Crane trucks, with various size and reach crane equipment
b. Several trucks medium to heavy duty in size.
c. Portable generators, welding and cutting equipment.
d. Power auger and digging equipment
e. Trailers for transporting large signs -_"-
f. Indoor and outdoor truck maintenance and storage space
10. Service equipment. A large part of the sign business is the
maintenance of electrical and non -illuminated signs. This
requires:
a. Aerial ladder trucks
b. Pickup and ladder trucks
c. Storage and maintenance space for these trucks
Conclusion:
This give one the scope and variety of equipment and work done by
any full -service sign company, such as has always occupied the
premises of 900 N. College since 1956.
