Re: Prairie dog control at 302 Conifer Street
To Whom It May Concern:
Scope:There are no active prairie dog burrows currently on the vacant lot at 302 Conifer Street
in Fort Collins. There are thirty to forty inactive burrows on the site, the tops of which are all
sealed with soil and show no sign of current or recent activity.
If prairie dogs return to the site before construction begins, Rocky Mountain Wildlife Services,
Inc., will fumigate the burrows using exhaust carbon monoxide.
Service offered: For the cost of fumigation, Rocky Mountain Wildlife Services, Inc. will treat
each active prairie dog burrow with carbon monoxide from engine exhaust.
Carbon monoxide is applied with the use of a PERC machine. A gasoline engine is used to
generate exhaust gases which are cooled, stored then released down inside the burrows before
the burrows are sealed with paper and soil.
Our service includes two visits: an initial fumigation followed, four to seven days later, with a
follow up visit. During the second visit, all burrows are checked and any that show recent
prairie dog activity are re-fumigated. We charge only for those burrows treated during the
initial fumigation. With the two visits, we hope to remove 92%to 98% of the prairie dogs
currently on the site.
Cost: The cost for treatment of prairie dog burrows includes both trip charge and an hourly
rate for the operation of the machines. The trip charge varies according to the distance from
our office north of Windsor, CO. For the Fort Collins area, the trip charge is $175.00. This fee
covers two fumigation visits to the site. The hourly rate for operating the PERC machines is
$330.20.
Recommendations: If construction is planned for the site, fumigation should take place ten
days to two weeks prior to any disturbance of the site. The follow-up visit should be completed
four to seven days prior. If there is too long a gap between treatment and disturbance of the
site, surviving and migrating prairie dogs may re-open numerous burrows and another
treatment may be required.
Hope this answers most of your questions. If you have further questions or concerns, please
contact me.
