Ms. Spears:
Soilogic Inc. (Soilogic) has received results of subcontracted water-soluble sulfate (WSS)
testing completed for the referenced project. Results of the completed laboratory tests and
associated geotechnical engineering recommendations are included with this report.
Water-soluble sulfates (WSS) tests were completed by a subcontracted laboratory on two
(2) representative samples of the subgrade soils which will likely be in contact with
structural concrete. The sulfate concentrations measured in the samples varied from
0.0676 to 0.1942 percent by weight in soil. ACI rates the measured concentrations as
being a negligible to moderate risk of concrete sulfate attack. For moderate sulfate
exposure, ACI recommends the use of Type II cement, a maximum water cement ratio of
0.50 and minimum compressive strength of 4,000 psi for concrete members in contact
with corrosive soils/water.
Utilizing the proper cement type and water/cement ratio outlined above will not eliminate
the potential for sulfate attack. Even concrete mixes utilizing Type V cement for ‘severe’
environments will deteriorate eventually under sulfate attack. Limiting the permeability
of the concrete and good concrete consolidation and curing procedures are more
important than cement type to reduce this risk. Air entrained structural concrete is
recommended because these admixtures will reduce the mix water/cement ratio and
resulting concrete permeability. Establishing a maximum water/cement ratio of 0.45 for
structural concrete could also be considered to further increase sulfate resistance.
