Our vision is to further advance this reputation through the development of Montava, a model “15-minute” bicycle-friendly community. One of Montava’s key intersections, a roundabout, will become a catalyst for mobility innovation. Following proven principles from decades of Dutch experience, our goal is to create a world-class intersection at this location with priority for active transportation. This unique point of intersection represents the heartbeat of our community and reflects the priorities that Montava is designed to enable, inspiring a new generation of climate- sensitive, people-oriented developments. Evolution of Travel Modes Reasons for Bike/Ped Priority Roundabout 1.World class demonstration of the foundation of Montava (community heartbeat) 2.Highly efficient proven system with 10 years “ramp up” to grow into it. 3.Catalyst to enable Fort Collins dream of being the “Netherlands of the US”. British Example of Dutch Design •Bicyclist priority over motorized traffic at the roundabout •Visible connectivity and continuity of paths throughout the community using contrasting surfaces, clear and obvious pathways and connections •At -grade crossings of roadways using proven devices •Principles of modern roundabout design upheld –circulating traffic priority, yield at entry, space for trucks, sight distance and geometric speed control. •Clear definition of priority for all users –markings, surface color and signs (and possibly landscaping), reflecting MUTCD compliance. Bicycle Facility Design to Establish Priority Context = The intersection of Timberline/Country Club must be designed such that pedestrians and bicycles can freely interact with the adjacent residential, commercial and park at grade. The bicycle and pedestrian experience of safety and security is the priority. Continuity = Two areas of focus: continuous connection of the regional trail to/from the north and connections with the elementary school. Color/Conspicuity = Visibility to signify precedence of bicycle as the leading mode Contrast = Differentiation of mode & travel path by color and intensity (gray = pavement; buff = sidewalk; red = bicycle paths) 1.12-ft. two-way regional trail transfers to one-way counterclockwise around the roundabout. 2.6-ft. sidewalks parallel the cycle facilities; vertical separation within roundabout, separation by color only for regional trail outside roundabout (snow clearing), and landscape separations elsewhere. 3.Complementary narrowed midblock roadway cross-sections. 1 2 3 1 2 3 132ft.
