Re: McDo 'lace Addition South College and Harmony
- Design"A"provides a strong tie to the existing Restautrant..The arrays of windows on the
addition provide a very strong visusal recall of those on the existing building. Both have 6 pieces of glass(3
wide x 2 high). Both are surrounded by brick. The arrays on the addition are larger than those on the
existing,as they should be to maintain a proportion with the addition which is similar to that of the existing
arrays to the existing building.
McDonald's has redefined its identity in the marketplace with its front Playplace additions. This solution
while integrating quite strongly with the existing.still rejects the tall inside space and play structure and
of that"redefined identity"which is essential to a successful Playplace.

eel Design`B"does not effectively enhance the integration of the Playplace to the existing relative to the
level of integration shown on the drawings already submitted. The 12"band does not relate to any particlar
element of the existing. Instead,the band breaks apart the upper and lower pieces of glass weakening any
visual recall of the relation of upper and lower glasson the existing.
This scheme gives the appearance of a two story office building,which is an inappropriate and unwise image
from a marketing point of view. Such an image misalignment would be damaging to the restaurant alone but,
would be compoundingly distressful after investment in an addition which people did not recognize as a
McDonald's Playplace.
