WATER METER JUSTIFICATION
(AWWA)
As required by the local potable water utility, Integrated Mechanical is providing justification for the water
meter sizing. The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has published the Manual of Water Supply
Practices – M22 with suggested guidelines on water meter and service sizing. Integrated Mechanical has
followed the guideline and the results are attached.
The Civil plans indicate a new 1” tap and meter. 5' downstream of the meter a 1.5” service will run into the
building.
An incoming static pressure of 95 psi has been indicated by Dan Mogen with the City of Fort Collins. Tap,
meter and service losses will leave a minimum of 76.3 psi at the water service entry inside the building.
Internal losses within the building for back flow prevention, pressure regulator, and the elevation loss will
cost another 35.8 psi, leaving 41.4 psi at the top floor for proper water fixture operation. With a pressure
requirement of 20 psi for a water closet on the top floor, this allows for 21.4 psi or pressure losses within
the building for piping distribution.
The facility will require 32 gpm of peak water flow. A 1” positive displacement meter is rated for up to 50
gpm while a turbine meter is rated for up to 50 gpm Either device will meet the facility demand.
The proposed 1" water service, tap & meter, is deemed to be acceptable by this office.
Thank you and please contact our office if you have any questions.
