Traps will be placed either at or near the holes that contain evidence of activity. b. Each trap will be baited with a food that has proven to be accepted by other prairie dogs on other jobs. c. Traps will be monitored every 2 hours +/- depending on the weather and temperatures of the day. d. All traps will be checked first thing in the mornings and all non-target animals will be released. e. All prairie dogs captured will be placed inside an insulated trailer and held for euthanasia at the end of each day. f. All prairie dogs will be euthanized with CO2 and placed in a freezer until ready for delivery to the raptors. 2. Timing a. Trapping will take place after June 1, 2021 to avoid the birthing season. b. A burrowing owl survey will be completed according to USF&WS and CPW protocol. c. If any burrowing owl activity is found, that area(s) will be cordon off to avoid euthanasia procedures. d. Euthanasia in this area will take place only after clearance has been given by the biologist. e. A letter of the findings from the owl survey will be presented at the end of the survey. 3. Efforts in locating a receiving site On Tuesday 1-26-2021 an email was sent to John Kefalas, District 1 Chair, and Kristin Stephens, District II, Chair Pro Tem asking them if they had any relocation sites within their districts since it is hard to cross county lines. As of today’s date we have not received a response from either party. On February 1, 2021 Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge as well as the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Emily Halsel were contacted, all of which have said they are not able to accept prairie dogs at this time. The parcel in question as well as surrounding properties were evaluated, and it was determined there are no surrounding areas suitable for any passive relocation. 4. Euthanasia CO2 / gas cartridges with timeline Euthanasia will take place after trapping efforts in that area have stopped. BEFORE any hole is treated that is near a structure it will be measured to determine the distance and to decide which method below will be used for that hole. a. APCS will use the Pressurized Exhaust Rodent Control (PERC) machine for all holes outside of the 100-foot barrier regulation as set forth by the Colorado Department of Agricultural 35-10-103(10) C.R.S., Part 15.6 (2). All holes will receive at least 5 minutes of pressurized CO. The CO produced from the PERC is the same as any combustion engine from a car except without emissions controls. If any hole is needed to be retreated it will receive up to 10 minutes. b. Any hole that is within the 100-foot barrier will be treated with the USDA gas cartridge EPA# 56228-61 APCS recommends turning dirt as soon as possible after euthanasia is completed in an area or areas.
