Subject: Spirit at the River meeting summaries _ Building and Fire
Russ, thank you for taking the time meeting with me on Tuesday. I’d like to summaries quickly what we
discussed and also bring Jim from Poudre Fire in the conversation. Jim and I met this morning and have a
few items to resolve and discuss.
In our meeting on Tuesday we had discussed the building classification. It’s a 4 story Type VA fully
sprinklered NFPA 13, R1 with Restaurant (A-2) and Garage (S-2). We currently have 2 exit stairs at the
end of the building wings both on the East end. These are 2 hour with standpipes and FDC’s at the roof.
The 4th floor portion over the middle of the building will need 2 exits. We had discussed exiting to the 3rd
floor, if we don’t exceed 250’ to the exit enclosures at the ends of the halls. Our travel distance from the
further most point at the 4th floor stays within 250’ when exiting down the 4th floor stair and walking
along the 3rd floor corridor to the exit stair. The corridors are rated 1 hr with 20 min doors. The stair
cores are 2 hr with 90 minute doors. In addition I had discussed the exit proposed at the roof from the
4th floor and you had indicated it needed to be enclosed if we would want to use it as part of the travel
distance to the exit enclosure to satisfy the 2 exits from the 4th floor. I had tentatively eliminated this
exit in an attempt to introduce the second stair to the 3rd floor.
In our meeting this morning with Jim and I, we had discussed the same exiting topic. Jim, your concern
was that you would want the stair to extend down to the first floor for access concerns during an
emergency. We had also talked about roof access with your equipment and believe we have what you
need for this building. The exit door and hallway at the 4th floor to the roof surface is something you
want to revisit and discuss. As I understand you might like to have this exit to the roof if the 4th floor
stair only travel to the 3rd floor. Both the 4th floor stairs will need standpipes as well and you had
mentioned the NE stair may not need a standpipe.
Please let me know if I have correctly summarized. Thank you.
