Subject: Burrowing Owl and Prairie Dog Management Schedule,
South College Storage Final Development Plan Round 1 Review
(FDP170019)
Dear Stephanie:
Thank you for meeting with us this morning at the 6020 South College Storage site. The
following provides the timeline for when each component of the black-tailed prairie dog
(Cynomys ludovicianus) management proposed at 6020 South College Avenue in Fort Collins,
Colorado would occur. Prior to any earth work the site (and within 150 feet of the edge of
disturbance) must be cleared for the western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea)
via presence/absence surveys per CPW guidelines. Surveys must be done three (3) times with
seven (7) days separating the surveys; this time period is actually 14 days (day zero is the first
day of the three survey days, second survey 7 days later, and final survey 7 days later –14
days). The day after the last burrowing owl survey the silt fence would be installed and the
backfilling of burrows would begin (covering 5 days, day 15-19). On the 20
th
day any
remaining open burrows would be treated. Earth work could begin on the 21
st
day. To
realistically develop a schedule a date of when construction is approved is necessary. Since
the approval date is unknown for this project the following schedule is only representative of
the timing of the sequences needed for the burrowing owl surveys and subsequent black-tailed
prairie dog management.

Initiation of passive prairie

Humane euthanasia of
burrows remaining open.
Begin Earthwork
The land surrounding the project area has a very high population of prairie dogs; once the
prairie dogs at the project area are no longer present other prairie dogs will try to re-colonize
the project area. Thus, it is extremely important to perform prairie dog passive control
regularly to discourage additional burrowing within the project area.
Wildlife Specialties is licensed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture (Commercial
Applicator License No. 13634) to provide all of the services necessary to complete the prairie
dog management.
